Ben is.....let’s just let the word “problematic” do a whole lot of work here....problematic off the field. And based on last season, unless he quickly learns what he can’t do anymore he’s going to be problematic on the field, too. But are we definitively laying the bulk of this on him based on anything other than AB’s side of the story and an understandable willingness to believe the worst about Ben?
You don't have to believe the worst about Ben to think he's a huge part of the problem there.
Fuck. Not retyping what I just lost due to shitty WiFi. I’ll just say I think you do, because why else would someone be willing to buy AB’s side of the story in full?
Because it's pretty evident from everything he does.
There are numerous reports from a decade ago of Roethlisberger being a massive dickhead that few people could tolerate, and I doubt that's all gone away as he's gotten older. He's the only QB I've ever heard who continually absolves himself of blame publically. No one other than his offensive linemen really seem to like him and it seems to be a point of his to keep it that way. He's been screaming down WRs recently just like other douche QBs like Phil Rivers and Matthew Stafford. He seemingly makes no real effort to improve aspects of his game and says things like "that's just how I am I'm a cowboy" or some dumb shit. You would have had to pull most QBs off of the field in Oakland and chain them to the bench, but not Ben. He's always got some overdramatized injury he's overcoming. He's probably the most selfish QB in the entire NFL and if you put his skills into another QBs body, that QB would probably be an absolute legend.
And yet people still trip over themselves to defend this guy, because Neil ODonnell and Kordell Stewart sucked.
That doesn't mean Antonio Brown is right, Antonio Brown is an absolute egomaniac as well and handled this situation with all the grace of a Bill O'Reilly chatting up a secretary. But it's transparent with him.
After AB did this, was he a pariah with his teammates? Nope. Not even a little bit.
James Harrison fuckin' called Ben out in a GQ article after they lost the SB to Green Bay and nobody on their team wasted a milliliter of breath to defend him.

It seems to me that admitting that AB is an unhinged egomaniac leaves the door open to put a lot of this squarely on him, again especially when we do not know exactly what happened.
But I don't remember the GQ article or a couple of other examples you threw out, so I'll just go ahead and give up and assume I've missed some of the more public airing of grievances with Ben, and that this was a slow burn with AB that finally blew up last season.
And did we ever get the actual story on what happened in the OAK game this year? I thought Tomlin took most of the heat for that, though (A) the many of same people who absolve Ben of everything for some reason blame Tomlin for everything and (B) I guess the team doing that for Ben is part of everyone else's issue here.
Pretty interesting (and in my opinion more proof that the GB franchise is in a downward slide towards irrelevance, especially as Rodgers ages out of effectiveness):

I imagine Hunt will be suspended for awhile, right?
Still, one hell of a lot of offensive potential.
And, also:
Even without Hunt - who likely will be suspended 6-8 games - the Browns offense looks formidable.
Also, I thought I saw something about the Giants being on the hook for $21 million of OBJ's contract, so I could see the Browns paying him more. They have the cap room.
It feels so weird to say this, but I am excited to see the Browns offense this year!
On a fantasy football sidetrack, I can keep Chubb with a 13th round pick, and OBJ with a 5th (when he was hurt 2 years ago, he was in his final keeper eligible year, so his owner dropped him. I picked him up, counts as an 8th round pick). More excited to see OBJ with Baker than an aged Eli with no blocking, I'm just worried about Hunt killing Chubb's value.

I love that he messed up the "t" and "y" in the first sentence but had the presence of mind to add the "u" to "favour". I bet it feels good to be righteously upset about football again.

So...he messed up the t and y on purpose, I would submit, so not to be literally wishing that on degen. Kinda.
Also, the Browns are making what look like good moves and all, BUT, what about the shrewd plan of over-paying to keep bad players on a bad team? What about that brilliance from the other end of Ohio? Total genius.

We don't but I know damn well Tom Brady isn't sitting on the sidelines taking it all in in that situation.
A former RB claimed that Ben fumbled on purpose to spite Haley once and also that Ben wanted to rest during the Oakland game, and I believe him.

And either Bell fucked up or TB is right and he was so desperate to get away from Pittsburgh that money was a secondary concern.
Didn’t he get 2.5x the guarantee playing on the franchise tag would have provided?

that's the opposite of pretty hefty
A first, a former first, and a third, plus his contract. OK. But you've got 17 TVs so I defer to your epic knowledge.
as you should, because it's pretty clearly established that I have far more football knowledge than you do
but that haul is not "pretty hefty" for a guy who averages 6.7 catches, nearly 93 yards and 0.75 TDs per game for his career ... and who turns 27 during the season. that's hall of fame-level production on a team that's had a declining Eli Manning and Reuben Randle and Sterling Shepard as the other top two receiving options
ETA: the "that contract!" point is also moot. if the Browns weren't accumulating cap space to take on contracts like this, what's the point of accumulating the cap space to begin with?

But he gave up one year's worth of salary for what sounds like $3MM or so more in guaranteed money (vs what the last, best offer was from Pittsburgh). Not sure how to account for that over the rest of his career.
Even as a Steelers fan, I've been pretty sympathetic to his side of things over the past few seasons (aside from not being able to abide by admittedly dumb NFL rules on pot consumption) but I really don't think this ended as well as he had hoped.

Steelers offered $17 mil guaranteed, against a franchise tag that guaranteed $14.5 mil. It was a horrible contract that no one in their right financial mind would sign. The options were playing out the tag and then going elsewhere OR sitting out the year, IF the true goal was maximizing guaranteed money.

How many Hall of Fame caliber in their physical primes get traded? OBJ and Khalil Mack?
They may have to add more money but otherwise the Giants paid the signing bonus so Beckham is getting paid less by Cleveland than LA is paying Brandin Cooks.

So who are the real comps to Beckham? There are only 5 I can see, if you squint, and look at great wide receivers who made at least 2 Pro Bowls with their original team and switched teams before their age 29 season: John Jefferson, Brandon Marshall, Del Shofner, Randy Moss, and Paul Warfield.
Beckham's current contract is actually cheaper than Jarvis Landry's in 2020 and carries no dead money in 2021, so if you're *really* worried about it for some reason, it's not an albatross

I thought the last offer was +$30MM guaranteed? I googled this morning to check my memory, but having a hard time because most contemporaneous articles, even ones that sided with Bell, assumed he was going to play last season. Was only the first season guaranteed?

You’re really Pats fan-ing it these last few days.
I know. TB's comment bugged me the other day. AB(rown) is clearly (sadly!) an asshole, too.
And I honestly guess I mis-remembered the details from the last contract the Steelers offered, but heard comments on the radio this morning that confirmed my faulty grasp of the facts.
