QUESTIONS

1. On a list of the 100 most populous cities in New England (2010 Census), name one that is found in Maine, New Hampshire, or Vermont (8)

2. SUBMITTED BY DC - Name one of the top 20 scientific innovations since the wheel, according to the assessment of a panel of scientists, entrepreneurs, historians of technology, and others who were assembled by the magazine The Atlantic in 2013 (20)
COMMISH NOTE: This list is a mix of inventions in the classic sense, and procedural innovations

3. Name any last name more common in Ireland than Kennedy (15)
NOTE: Some names have been traditionally used with and without an O' at the start - the 2 uses are combined for these totals

4. Name one of the 10 deadliest jobs in America, according to Forbes.com through Bureau of Labor Statistics data (10)
NOTE: This is a statistical list determined purely by occupational-related deaths per full-time equivalent employee, and not a subjective "most dangerous" list

5. Name one of the five characters depicted on the official movie poster for the 1987 movie Spaceballs or the actor/actress that portrayed them (10)

6. SUBMITTED BY LJAM - Since the Cy Young Award was first instituted in 1957, there have been 8 times when a team won "The Treble", meaning it won the World Series in the same year they had the MVP and Cy Young winner.  13 different men represent these award winners (on three occasions, the MVP and Cy were the same man).  Name one of them.
HINT: The years in question are 1957, 1960, 1961, 1963, 1968, 1980, 1984, and 1988

7. SUBMITTED BY BRONTO - Name any player to win the Heisman Trophy as a junior or a sophomore since Billy Sims in 1978 (10)

8. The top ten all-time leading scorers in the NBA are Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Wilt Chamberlain, Shaquille O'Neal, Moses Malone, Elvin Hayes, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Dirk Nowitzki. Name anyone currently ranked 11-20 (10)
NOTE: 3 of the players are active

9. Name any Olympic team that has won more than 4 modern Summer Olympic medals and is either NOT currently an independent nation OR no longer exists in the same form as it did (12)
NOTE: Does not include Chinese Taipei, the Olympic designation for Taiwan. Examples that have won LESS than 4 medals include the Virgin Islands and Hong Kong

10. There are 24 current members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame who threw at least 1 touchdown pass in the NFL. Name anyone on the list with more TD passes than Bob Waterfield's 97 but less than Terry Bradshaw's 212 (10)
NOTE: Includes AFL statistics

For #10, are AFL stats counted in the player's career total?

I'm in. Went with first instinct on all of them except one that I am sure I ended up thinking too much about and will undoubtedly cost me. But overthinking has cost me on a few so far this season. Changing the gameplan so my opponent will be caught off guard.

The Heisman question should have read "junior or sophomore". It has been edited in the original post. Anyone who has already answered and wants to resubmit may do so.

The question was originally juniors. Are we going with juniors, or expanding it to sophomores? (There was some confusion because there are unreliable lists out there.)

If it's expanded to sophomores, the # of possible correct answers increases.

I'd be okay if it was a great movie. But this is the kind of movie I hope to avoid, and then immediately forget if forced to see part of it on a plane trip. Is having really bad taste a critical factor for Swampcrash success? In a few years will I be struggling to remember who was in Captain America: The first whatever, which I may have watched last weekend while working out in the Midwest Olympic Training Center (basement)?

So we need a new number of possible answers.

Got the PM, and I'm glad to give you a bit of help behind the scenes. As usual, I passed your draft answers to my daughter for review. Her reply pasted below. And thanks for the Fat Tire.

Dad -- here are my thoughts on your friend's trivia answers. Also, everyone says the beer is good, but next time can he send some of that other stuff Colorado is famous for? So much easier to get into school with this in my backpack.

Q2: My friends say otherwise, but I don't think that a fancy panel of science types are going to say that the bong is a top 20 scientific innovation. Also, the cave drawings suggest that it may have been invented before the wheel, so it wouldn't count.

Q3: The question says Ireland, not Iceland. So nice idea, but Gunnarsdottir as a common name is not going to be a winner for him. You old people still listen to U2 right? Why not go with Edge or Bono? Losers.

Q4: "Broncos coach" is a dumb answer. They may routinely fail to thrive, but there aren't many in that profession. How about "Parent?" I'll bet a lot of people die on this job. Not as many as should though. Don't be late to pick me up after practice tonight. Again. Really.

Q5: Spaceballs? Seriously? And you people say we are culturally stunted.

Q6: I seriously doubt that someone named JaVale McGee is high on the NBA all-time scoring list. I'd go with Jeremy Lin. What a dreamboat!

Q9: You've always told me that the USA is run by the plutocrats, so it is not really an independent nation. And you're always saying it's not the same nation it once was, now that you can't buy cassette tapes at the "corner store." So I'd go with the United States. Definitely way more than 4 summer Olympics medals.

The other questions are basically even dumber, so I skipped them. Not worth my time reviewing your friend's answers. Depressing even. I could feel my SAT score going down as I read them. Who writes these things? Is there a book of dumb questions you guys read? Or have you now advanced to the point where you can find a website of dumb questions? Dumbness.

To make this interesting, how about a bet? If you win, I have to watch the trailer for Spaceballs. Twice. If I win, you have to post a youtube of you singing some pathetic 70s tune.

I'd consider that option. But the pain might be too great to get past the Youtube censors.

But in any event, it won't be necessary. Not after the one pointer I score on the Spaceballs question. No one else will know that Laurence Olivier played Bucky. And how many people know that Marvin Barnes was a top 20 NBA scorer?
