Batkid threw out the first pitch at yesterday's Giants' home opener. This picture of him being led to the mound by Matt Cain was on the front page of the San Francisco Comical today.

I'm getting ready to be cynical...so let me preface that by saying - good for the kid - it's not his fault that he's sick or that he's been getting this treatment.

Here goes...Batkid got a whole day of the city bending over backwards...how about another kid around there get in on the action? I doubt he's the only terminally ill kid in the Bay Area.

The Bay Area/Lexington rivalry is second only to the Boston/New York City rivalry (as seen through the eyes of delusional Bostonians).

Is that a measure of native languages or does it include what students barely learn in school? I can't see how there are that many native French speakers in NC versus Mandarin or some other immigrant language. I don't think I can think of any native French speakers, but I know hundreds of Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese, etc immigrants.

No idea. I think in Ohio's case the reason it's German is because of the Amish. Technically they speak a German dialect called Pennsylvania Dutch, but despite its name, it's a form of German language. I'm not sure if that explains why German is spoken in so many other states, though.

The exact question on the American Community Survey is "Does this person speak a language other than English at home?" and if yes, "What is this language?"

So yes, it's still heavily influenced by the old world immigrants at this point. Especially with that kind of question where Joe and Judy Average say that each of their 4 kids sometimes speak Italian at home because their grampa taught them some swears.

In 2012, 30,196 North Carolinians said French. 32,437 said Chinese, but I think those are grouped for the purposes of the table I'm looking at. The map is using more specific data that separates Chinese, Mandarin, Cantonese, etc. So Dave, your perception is probably warranted but only because you think all Asians speak the same language. Shame on you.
