I don't have an issue with the light saber. Give me a simple plot that makes sense and tells a good story, and I'll be more than happy to enjoy all of the "this looks cool, so we're throwing it in even if it doesn't make the most sense" ideas they want to include.

And I like Abrams. Alias spent a season or two as my favorite show. The prequels sucked. I'm excited. But JJ is also capable of missteps, and his last movie is a good example of what not to do in this sort of situation.

Penny Marshall from my university, no one from my HS.

I'm looking forward to the movie, and as long as it doesn't have annoying characters for the kids, I'll be happy.

The youngsters here wanted to watch Carrie. I convinced them to try the original, which was a hit with them. Then, we watched the recent remake. Pretty darn good; I was surprisingly impressed. Then again, I had not been informed that Julienne Moore was Carrie's mom.

Random factoid: Piper Laurie, who played Carrie's mom in the old school version, in her first movie she had a fling with the older leading man. Who was between wives. She would've made Ronald Reagan a much cooler first lady.

I think the light saber falls into the category of incredibly cool but wildly impractical. How can anyone swing that thing without cutting themselves?

Holy cow - heard it was good, but I thought it was fantastic.

And this was not my kind of movie. Highly, highly recommended.

So the wife and i went DVR mining last night and watched The Great Gatsby - Luhrmann edition. Oh my god what a shitty movie. I cannot tell you how much I hated that movie. Looked gorgeous, but overwrought. TObey Maguire cannot act.

Maybe the two side blades are more of a defensive purpose (although not necessarily a Sith thing per se), such as a guard bell on a top of a hilt for an epee. Fuck it. I has the Millennium MuthaPhukkin' Falcon. I'm with Rass so as long as they tell a good story, looks cool, and keeps my interest for the 2:20, I'll be pleased.

The hilted lightsaber bothers me not (though it would have been better without the projecting metal parts, RE: rass's comments). A master of the Sith Arts can do what he wants. Darth Honey Badger.

Liked the trailer, a lot. Rang the right bells for an old dude like myself who grew up on the originals. Couldn't resist going to read some of the rumors and rumored spoilers out there. Unlike the fan boys who are crazy, I trust Abrams to do right by this. And, given how low the bar is from Lucas's last efforts, I think these will be good.

I don't agree with this. Maybe for Jedi, sure. Empire has aged a bit as well, but I think the original still has the charm and appeal it did nearly 40 years ago. I still find all 3 to be fun watches though. Not so with the new trilogy as the whole time I'm goggling over the bad acting, terrible dialog and ridiculous plot points.

I avoid spoilers like the plague. I won't even read things about The Battle of the Five Armies, and I've read the book probably 4 times!

I watched Boyhood on the plane last night. For some reason, I was under the mistaken impression it was going to be some kind of documentary. I'm glad I was wrong. Great concept and execution, and I thought the second half of the movie was really good, so I give it a thumbs up. But, I did think all the kids in the movie were mediocre actors.

That's most likely gonna happen when you just pick a kid 12 years back and start filming, no?

True, but the primary kid actors who were in the movie start to finish were better than the ones they hired to play the ancillary characters during their adolescent/high school years. That's really what I had in mind.

The daughter is Linklater's daughter in real-life. I spent the entire movie think the real-life mama was the main freshman girl in Dazed and Confused.

Keaton was fantastic - and Ed Norton is always great - maybe moreso here given that this may be how he actually is on sets....barely recognized Naomi Watts.

Loved seeing Amy Ryan too - someone needs to build a series around her.

Tried watching Time Bandits with the girls (around the same age as your son) once, and they lost interest pretty quickly. They loved ET and The Goonies.

Other suggestions? They went through a big The Neverending Story phase at one point. Haven't tried The Dark Crystal yet, as that freaked me out as a kid.

I didn't like Time Bandits that much as a kid, so I don't remember it well.

My kids like both Labyrinth and The Never Ending Story. Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure was a huge hit too. As was both Ace Ventura and Dumb and Dumber. Austin Powers as well. They haven't gotten old enough for other 80's movies I remember, like Poltergeist or Gremlins - too scary.
