Founding member of Big Brother and the Holding Company, guitarist Sam Andrew is dead.

When Janice left Big Brother, Sam Andrew was in her new band. He's the guitarist to Joplin's right, playing the stinging lead lines. Dig the groovy scene with the audience getting down with Janice on stage. Probably not happening with Beyonce, Katy or Taylor these days.
This is Sam Andrew's arrangement of Summertime. Note Janis directing the clueless cameraman to pan to Sam during the intro.

I moved a post about Janis Joplin from here to the Old Timey Music thread as it dealt only tangentially with Sam Andrew.

Former NBA player Jerome Kersey, best known for his time with the Blazers, at 52. Cause of death not released yet. Had just spoken at a school the day before and looked healthy and happy.

Kersey had a very high basketball IQ and was part of some fine teams in Portland.

Yeah, but I also hear he was well-spoken so I can't be sure if there wasn't a cracker in the woodpile.

Nice bit of bass/guitar interplay in the instrumental bridge (starting at about 3:07).

He played some simple yet unique riffs, only briefly moving high up the neck. Often players wander up there, and forget they are bass players; he stays anchored on the bottom while traveling up high.

Re: Worthy of mention, too obscure for own thread
So true. I just commented on Fraser over in 'our' thread, to similar effect.
One of the amazing things about him to me is that at a very young age he used his technical proficiency to find feeling in an economical way, rather than attempt to blow everyone away with speed and power. This is a 50 year-old bass player's approach, in a lad who wasn't pushing 20 when he cut his legendary tunes. When listening to Free, I sometimes found myself wondering if Fraser had roots in classical music, where restraint is central to playing so many compositions.

There's a trivia question: name two Percy Sledge songs. A true one-hit wonder, but he made a lot of other good records.

Re: Worthy of mention, too obscure for own thread
Oh, the pain. His one hit was a classic work and of course a gargantuan pop hit, twice. He toiled in his own size XL shadow, and was under-appreciated as a result.howard wrote:There's a trivia question: name two Percy Sledge songs. A true one-hit wonder, but he made a lot of other good records.
But Percy Sledge put out a long series of fine soul covers of songs associated with pop and rock artists. Some examples: Many Rivers to Cross, Dark End of the Street, I've Got Dreams to Remember, Bring It On Home To Me, and If Loving You Is Wrong. In some cases I like Percy's version as well or better than the originals, even the really good ones (as above). When he wasn't covered in syrupy strings and was recording with a solid producer, he delivered the soul goods.
Here's one of my favorites. Not bad advice from Mom, especially if you've been overly swayed by the sentiment of When A Man Loves A Wuh-mun.

Errol Brown, lead singer of Hot Chocolate and "You Sexy Thing" fame, which is actually a really good song once you get past the number of times it's been ironically used in commercials and dumb comedies.

From a commencement speech Biden made last month, prior to his son's death:
But with the rest let me say upfront, and I mean this sincerely, there’s nothing particularly unique about me. With regard to resilience and compassion, there are countless thousands of people, maybe some in the audience, who’ve suffered through personal losses similar to mine or much worse with much less support to help them get through it and much less reason to want to get through it.
It’s not that all that difficult, folks, to be compassionate when you’ve been the beneficiary of compassion in your lowest moments not only from your family, but from your friends and total strangers. Because when you know how much it meant to you, you know how much it mattered. It’s not hard to be compassionate.

Great story about Christopher Lee. His character Saruman dies in Return of the King by getting stabbed in the back. Peter Jackson, the director of LOTR advised him to scream and cry out in pain. Christopher Lee, though, knew better. He was in British special forces during WWII, and informed him that when a man is stabbed in the back, his eyes go into surprise, and the man gasps, as air is quickly expelled from his lungs as they begin to fill with blood.
Needless to say, Christopher Lee's version is the one in the film.
