My wife babysat Major League-ish Pitcher Chaz Roe. She ran into him yesterday at my youngest's school and couldn't place why she knew him, but finally figured it out.

I just read through the second link you provided. Does the $294K average house price on his street include his $1.5MM house? And Rachel, Jill or Perry?

At a social function, I shared a table with a guy who wouldn't let his kids watch Dora because there were never any "consequences" for Swiper's actions.

I pointed out that Swiper loses every time he does something wrong and is constantly disappointed.

Not strong enough for this guy. He wanted Swiper to be shown experiencing some sort of punishment like a time out or a trip to a "penalty box" of sorts. I can only imagine what happens when his 4 year old sasses her mother.

Swiper is kinda a huge dick. Who steals someone's lunch and throws it up in a tree just because?

My favorite thing to do with kids shows is find the character that is specifically there to represent a certain type of behavioral problem in the real world. Wallykazam is basically a guidance counselor's lunch group.

Is "being a middle aged, nervous and complain-y jewish dude" a behavioral problem? If so, Telly plays it perfectly.

I was coughing. I have bronchitis. A lesser man wouldn't have even showed up let alone pull it off.

Saw the first person on FB that has mutual friends because of the Swamp membership in the "You're from Grand Junction" FB group.

She has really shitty taste in beer.

But it's the hidden costs that are a killer. $8,000-$16,000 a month in "C.C." (which I assume is "Carrying costs" or some sort of maintenance?) and about the same in property tax.

You know, looking at that website made me think that a real-life version of "The Towering Inferno" might not be such a bad thing.

Terrible, I know, but the fact that... (I'll spare you the Trotskyist rant).

What I think of when I think of Grand Junction. Hot licks on the pedal steel.

And Grand Junction is the home of an old friend -- my father's fiancee in the early 1950s -- now suffering through medical woes with strength and dignity.

I remember that song. First time I saw it on an album sleeve, I ended up disappointed to find out it was an instrumental. Peaches and cherries are great, there. But nowadays I understand that a lot of the orchards have become vineyards for wine. With the high desert/Monument/Moab/Canyonlands on one side, and Rocky Mountains/Grand Mesa/Mt. Garfield on the other, it's a pretty scenic area. And, as a regional hub with lots of bars for cowboys/miners/railroaders/bikers/tourists/Utah escapees, etc. it was a hellraising place back then. But, like most kids, I didn't appreciate my hometown. It was just a small town I wanted out of.

Perhaps it's a failure to appreciate. But whatever positive features Grand Junction had back then, it could be that it just wasn't the right place for you, and you knew it. Sometimes it takes a bad fit to stimulate a big change that will work out for the best.

I had a passionate hatred for the town where I spent my teen years. Pretty much nothing was working for me there. Looking back, that was the best thing that could have happened. I blasted off, far out of that orbit. Major struggles ensued. But good things followed. I shudder to think what would have happened if things had elevated during my teens to the point where they were just okay, mediocre, and not that great.

I don't understand the affinity some people feel for places. The town that I lived in for my last two years of high school was a dump 100 years ago. People from my HS loved the friggin' place. What the hell people, when there is a arson problem and the property value is going up because of it you're not living in the best of places.

If it was a a great little happening town I could understand, but there are people I knew that moved away from home for college and then moved right back to that hell-hole. A 45 minute drive to Burlington is the farthest they range from home. Sad really.

Ha! No. Barre is up and coming, lots of shops/restaurants and the like. Plus Plainfield, Worchester, Montpelier are quite nice.

The town in question is Richford, a little shithole on the Canadian border. I graduated in 1990 and have been back 3 times since.

Probably not. Jay is the other side of the mountain from Richford. It's mostly Canadians that ski there and they all come down 91 through Newport

That is very cool. I wonder about apps like this. Does it ultimately teach the student, or just give the answer? Yes, I saw that it goes through the steps, but does a student learn as well by just seeing the steps laid out for them? My initial thinking is that for most, the answer is no.

I think going through the steps could be huge for a lot of kids. How many kids out there get to Algebra I (or even early in many cases) and find that Mom or Dad is no longer a viable helper for math homework? Walking through the steps like that is pretty similar to what you'd get from the teacher in class, so I think it could be a good tool. Of course, it's a pretty obvious cheating tool as well.
