Yes, too bad MTV made it illegal for musicians to not be pretty. Thank goodness Tom Petty slipped through a loophole.

Not a great looking band, nor are all their followers that easy on the eye. But this is a nice look back...with some tasty jams.

The Bee Gees are one of the ugliest bands without Barry Gibb. He singlehandedly probably makes them above average overall.

I'm surprised Sidney Crosby, Kenny Stills and Steve Nash have never taken a photo together. Maybe get Steve Young involved as well.

The Who have been a punchline for the better part of 30 years now, but in their day, they were the best rock band in the world.
Fucking Keith Moon!

Re: Old Timey Music for Howard and DC
I saw The Who last weekend. Zak Starkey played drums, Pino Palladino was on bass. Starkey played in the style of Moon, and Palladino hits the notes on some of the legendary Entwhistle bass lead lines. But of course they can be only a shadow of their predecessors. Still, the band -- also with Simon Townsend on guitar and three keyboard players who sang harmony -- sounded fine.
It was wonderful to hear song after song that I've been listening to for 40 to 50 years. These are simply tremendous rock compositions in remarkably diverse styles.
"Won't Get Fooled Again" put a chill up my spine. They played some songs from "Quadrophenia" which I was big on back in the day. It was a better concept album than "Tommy" in my view. The band didn't stray far from the recorded version of the songs, which meant they sounded great, but was at the same time a bit disappointing. I'd like to hear what Townsend, after all these years of developing as a musician, might do with a free hand as to arrangements.
And even now into his seventies, Pete still windmills. Quite a bit actually.

Re: Old Timey Music for Howard and DC
When I was in high school and college in the late 1970s, I used to play the hell out of that record. It was during the heyday of disco and punk, so it was extremely unpopular among most of my friends and acquaintances. So, those of us who liked it felt like members of a cult.
freshman in college, late 70's. Being introduced at a party wrote: Him: Oh, yeah, you're a friend of Mike's right? You like hard rock and punk, right?
Me: Um, yeah...
Him: Sorry, man, I can't get into either of those...
Her: Especially, Rush! I hate that voice.
Him: And who do they think they are with those pretentious lyrics?
Her: But, mainly that shrieking voice. Yuck.
Me. Yeah, um... I'm gonna get a beer, now...

So you're saying it "didn't fit the plan?"
and I've been the member of the cult for some time. We basically wore out CDs of 2112, Caress of Steel and Thick As A Brick (not Rush, but you gotta love hour long albums made up of a song (well 2 because of LPs) when we were in college.

Re: Old Timey Music for Howard and DC
My daughter was playing her bass guitar yesterday afternoon along with one of her records. Even though the song was a new one I didn't know, the bass line sounded really familiar. It bothered me for a couple hours until I could place it. Baby, Come Back by The Equals (featuring a young Eddy Grant). (Not to be confused with the cover of that song by UB40/Pato Banto, or the different song by the same name by yacht-rock group, Player). Of course my daughter noted differences between the bass line she was playing and the one in this song, but it was enough to stick this song into my head, and now I can't get it out.

That Equals tune was a #1 in the UK and elsewhere in Europe, ( http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=4155" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )I don't remember it at all from childhood, but heard it in middle age, on Sirius satellite radio no doubt. Just don't let the one by Player get stuck. As it is now in mine. Thanks a lot. Maybe Jerloma will give it his special treatment, and salvage the turn this thread has taken. (It's actually not a horrible tune) ( " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )

Eddy Grant of The Equals is best known as a solo artist for his song Electric Avenue. He also wrote Police on My Back, which was covered by The Clash:

Earth Opera, interesting to hear David Grisman and Peter Rowan prior to them getting in the bluegrass.

Wo-o-o lonely girl, would you like a sweet to eat?
I've got somethin' that I'd like you to hold
And my brother will tell you that it's good for your cold
So-o-o-o then, surely there is nothin' wrong
Take my hand and we'll try to make a stand
For all censorship, decency, all night long

Love the Modern Lovers. If you ever have a chance go see Jonathon Richman, doesn't do that much Modern Lovers stuff, but nearly everything he does is great.Pruitt wrote:We all have certain songs that can almost always induce euphoria.

That was cool, a 1969ish San Francisco vibe. Kinda like Moby Grape or early Sons of Champlin.
