Swamp Quarantine-ish Movie Night - Teen Wolf (1985) - Thursday, April 8, 2021 - 9 PM ET

Post by brian »

Teen Wolf (1985)
Director: Rod Daniel
Screenwriter: Jeph Loeb, Matthew Weisman
Starring: Michael J. Fox, James Hampton, Susan Ursitti, Jerry Levine
Running Time: 92 minutes
Budget: $1.2 million
Box Office: $90 million
Streaming availability: Checking, appears to be none.
On-demand/PPV: $2.99/$3.99 on cable and satellite services
Other availability: Available on Showtime.
Start Time: 9:00 p.m. (movie starts at 9:10 p.m.)

Random notes:

Could be the answer to the personal trivia question of movie I’ve seen the most times while not knowing the name of the director.

The high school Scott Howard attends is never named, though the schools in the film are identified by their nickname. Scott/TW’s mascot of course is the Beavers. The filmmakers were allowed to use the same logo that Oregon State University used at the time.

In a film that features some insanely egregious casting of overage actors to play high schoolers, the most egregious may be Stiles (Jerry Levine), who was 28 years old when Teen Wolf was released. (Because I know you’re wondering, Scott/TW’s antagonist Mick (Mark Arnold) was also 28 when Teen Wolf was released. He is two months younger than Levine.

MJF himself was a wide-eyed youth of 24 at the time by comparison.

Budget was only $1.2 million? Wow.

I haven't seen this one in a LONG time. I skipped watching it with the kids when they were in Back to the Future mode because I thought it had a very 80s random and gratuitous boobs scene (sup They Live) but reading up now I guess it's just underwear/bra. Oops.

Without a doubt. Even as a 12-year-old that bothered me what an idiot Scott is.

Boof was boofable for sure.

She's also in the 80s classic "Zapped."
Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

Just read the budget vs. box office numbers in the first post and that's an insanely great return on investment.

I'll post a pause point here shortly, but it'll probably be around Scott's ridiculous turn as a theater geek.

Is this the one where DSafe was going to drop some mind-blowing fact about the making of?

I wouldn't say mind-blowing, but there is something in the background at the end that is subject to much debate on the internet, more or less debunking it. But, I'll still share that at the appropriate time.

I also heard Amin Elhassan's explanation of why "Teen Wolf" is a deeply racist movie this morning, so I'll be dropping some of that as it goes, as well.

I think I can guess at this and if I'm right while I don't necessary disagree with the premise it might be reading a bit much into stuff that's not necessarily there. But I'm interested in hearing about it.

Aw shit. I like the scene where his dad gets all threatening. Unless I’m making that up, in which case I would have liked it.

My favorite scene is where he gets excited after making a basketball shot after shooting hoops with Boof. He seems to show some real joy.

It's kind of weird how spare these opening credits are for an 80's comedy with a popular "teen" star. Normally, there would be the single from the soundtrack here or something.

Interesting bit of trivia. The actor who plays coach Finstock is Jay Tarses, whose daughter Jamie would become the first woman to ever run an American broadcast network (ABC). She just died earlier this year.
