20th anniversary of 9/11
I mean, the coverage is honestly probably going to be overwhelming. I think there's enough distance that a lot of broadcasters might not be as reticent to show the planes striking the towers and the towers falling over and over again. For anyone with any kind of PTSD about that day, the next few weeks are likely to be really triggering. Anyway, that's why the special thread.
The reason for the post is that I did not have Spike Lee being a 9/11 truther on my bingo card.

Jesus. Why do otherwise smart people seem to think that the steel beams had to actually melt to collapse?
Totally Kafkaesque

Wait, Spike Lee smart? Sure he makes some decent movies, but the man is a Knicks fan. Enough said.

If I were a civilian I'd post about January 6th and how you should #NeverForget a bunch of MAGAt feral hogs attacked the Capitol in an attempted coup to overthrow the government despite a free and fair election.
I'm kinda over the imposed guilt about that day when so many people don't really give a fuck.
Instead, I'm going to ignore social media as much as I can and not comment.

Did you guys see Spike Lee at Cannes last month? He mistakenly announced the best picture winner 5 minutes into the show.

Not even a matter of (as people said back then) "or, the terrorists will win" - more a matter of "the homegrown idiots will win." Which I think we can see has happened. Some of the responses to the events of 9/11 sadly exposed just how gullible and stupid people are.

Are we allowed to express any skepticism about whether the Bush admin was taken completely off guard? And not just "if he'd read his memos"?

I think we've seen enough through the years - both before and after 9/11 - to see that the US security apparatus, the State Department and the Military is far, far less than 100% competent.

Re: 20th anniversary of 9/11
I can’t cross the line to “they let it happen” if you mean that they wanted the towers to be hit. So did they mean for it to progress to a certain point and were gonna intervene before it hit the end game and blew it? Seems like a tough sell, too.

Yeah, I think the idea that there was an awareness, but no action was taken as a conspiracy theory assigns a level of competency that just doesn't align with reality.
I think people forget or just don't understand that the FBI was very much a decentralized organization, especially with regards to investigatory databases and information sharing, back when this all went down. They were also not tracking foreign terrorist threats back then. At least not on a scale that would coordinate efforts in any actionable/significant way.
So, yeah, it seems obvious that someone in the Minneapolis field office flagging some Saudis taking flight lessons SHOULD have triggered something, but... It's also not at all surprising that it didn't go anywhere. LOTS of dudes come over here and take flight lessons, we are a global leader on this front.

My wife is at Seatac now about to fly home on 9/11. I know there’s really no reason to be worried but it isn’t the easiest thing to come to grips with. I doubt I’ll get much sleep and I know it’s unreasonable.
Hold on, I'm trying to see if Jack London ever gets this fire built or not.

I met a girl from the US in a bar in Dublin who claimed on the night of the Super Bowl in 2002 that U2 had saved Rock and Roll following their half-time show. Never have more people died for less...

I specifically planned a vacation around Sept 11, 2002 because it was dirt cheap to travel that week.

Re: 20th anniversary of 9/11
Completely agree. There was a shocking lack of information sharing between various agencies tasked with similar jobs, like preventing terrorist attacks. In many ways, there were laws preventing sharing information across Departments, so they couldn't share information. That was a large reason for the creation of DHS.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Tue Aug 24, 2021 11:26 am Yeah, I think the idea that there was an awareness, but no action was taken as a conspiracy theory assigns a level of competency that just doesn't align with reality.

Social media is predictably insufferable today.
If I were a civilian with no job I'd totally love to drop an #AllTerroristAttacksMatter with January 6th, Khobar Towers, the USS Cole,...etc.
But mostly that first one.

How many of the 3,000 9/11 victims would have been future Trump voters? FDNY, NYPD, Pentagon, hedge fund/Wall Street guys, lawyers. At least 65 percent, right?

The more I think about it, that was a really shitty thing to say. “Hey, 9/11 was bad and all, but at least there was around 2100 fewer Trump voters in New York.”
I don’t even think Delaware would’ve said that.

I never said I’m glad they died. 2000 people couldn’t swing elections in NY or NJ anyway. In all honesty, it was just a thought that occurred to me.

Re: 20th anniversary of 9/11
I remember his detailing watching people jump and hearing them hit the street. His writing was so descriptive, it stuck with me.
I just read a really interesting article about the ferry evacuations from the Financial District. I was watching from a park in Hoboken when the first tower fell, and very soon after, the ferries were dropping people off and they were all going to that park. Most covered in white dust, their faces had a distant, detached look from being in shock. It was haunting, and as the park started to fill, my roommate and I left to get out of the way.
It took me hours to get a call through to my parents. My mom told me to go outside and do something to distract me from the anxiety, but the streets were still full of the white dusted zombies in suits, military helicopters flying low enough you could make out the faces of the soldiers hanging out the open doors with rifles readied. And the plume of smoke coming from the burning pit where the towers stood, stretching for several miles north over Manhattan. A cloud that was visible from space, and hung over the City for weeks. Fuck, I remember for months, stopping and listening every time I’d hear a plane flying over heard, calculating where the Empire State Building or nearest potential target, and thinking about the best direction to run.
