Watched Spencer last night, the movie about Princess Diana. Holy shit, that was the worst movie I have seen in decades. The whole movie has like three ideas - Diana's unhappy! She's just like Anne Boleyn! She feels trapped! But they never show any reasons why she's unhappy. She just is. I guess the audience is supposed to already know (which I guess we all do). And because they don't trust the writing or acting to get across the idea that she's unhappy, the entire movie has a grating, discordant score playing to make sure WE'RE uncomfortable too.

If someone asks you to watch this movie, run, fake your death, remember some errands you have to do, anything. Don't waste your 2 hours.

The score was done by Jonny Greenwood, of Radiohead. He also did the score for Power Of The Dog (he got an Oscar nomination for that one).

He was interviewed a few weekend ago on Fresh Air about writing film scores: For Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood, there are no rules to composing for film

That's funny. I did have occasional flashbacks to Power of the Dog due to the ominous-feeling scenery shots and music, but this movie is nowhere near as good as that one. There was no payoff to the mood-setting in Spencer. And the music was honestly painful to listen to at times. Just incredibly heavy-handed and unnecessary.

Enjoyed Nightmare Alley. It was long but visually entertaining. Pretty strong acting and a different story than most stuff out there (romcom/shoot em up).

Loved that movie. Just completely original and beautiful. And what an incredible acting job by that little girl. Might be the best performance I've ever seen by a small child.

So I didn't get a chance to watch this, but before any of you do I would VERY strongly recommend watching this documentary about him on Hulu.

It's one of the most interesting and crazy documentaries I've ever seen and I watch a LOT of documentaries.

I really don't want to give anything way but the NY Times review I've linked does a good job of not giving away any of the three or four huge twists throughout the doc (yes, the documentarian agreeing to do meth with the subject of the documentary is actually NOT one of the huge twists).

It sucks a little bit that I've actually met Johnathan a few times (it's a long story) and definitely knew of his career trajectory when he announced his illness, so I feel like as amazing as it was for me, it would be even more so for someone who was a fresh mark.

Strongly, strongly, strongly recommended.
Bump because of his passing. If you haven't seen the doc on Hulu, might be as good a time as any.

Definitely. And every other segment on sportscenter, and an extended fake Knicks bing bong piece that might have been ESPN related but not sure? That was the one that finally sent me here. Though the little Caesar’s thing is really bad.

We just watched 'Coda'. It's about a high school senior, who wants to be a singer, and her father, mother, and older brother are deaf. She works with her father and brother on their fishing boat in Gloucester, MA.

Its really good! The father, Troy Kotsur, was nominated for an oscar, and the mother was played by Marlee Matlin.

When she's singing during the school concert, and they switch to her families point of view, and its silent, but they are watching the crowd's reactions...well, it got a little dusty in the room.

And as a non-spoiler, for those of you with kids who might be considering it...it's a fairly hard PG-13. Couple of pretty violent scenes that might be tough on younger kids even though it's a super hero movie.

People keep calling it Gritty, but instead of David Eckstein, it's the darkness here.

We watched the new 'West Side Story' last night. It was really good...but the whole time I kept thinking "This would be a great movie...if there wasn't already a really good version of this movie".

The big set pieces are great...especially 'I Want To Be In America' and 'Office Krupke'. Maria, Anita, and Riff were all great. It was good to see Rita Moreno again. And whatever you think of Spielberg, the guy can direct the hell out of a movie.
[+] spoiler
The re-arranging of song was a bit jarring. For example, 'I Feel Pretty' comes after the Rumble.

And the weak link...again...is Tony. Richard Beymer isn't that great in the original, and Ansel Elgort is really weak. Never believed either of them could have been a leader of the Jets.

We watched the other night, too. Such a great looking movie. I didn’t think Elgort was as bad as the reviews I had read when it came out. Thought he nailed his last couple of big acting (not singing) scenes, but one of those was with Rita Moreno and maybe working with her helps.

That being said I thought the Riff/Tony relationship was the one that worked the least. Not sure if that can be blamed on Elgort or not.

Wife was super excited because the woman who played Maria is from the town where she works. She was great, as was Anita.

Watched Nightmare Alley this weekend. It was...fine. The more I see him try to be a "serious" actor, the less I am convinced Bradley Cooper ever will be able to pull it off. Especially in scenes with Willem Dafaoe, Cate Blanchett, Toni Collete, etc.

Also, we went to a different theater than usual to see The Batman, and the spurned one sent me an email today asking if I missed anything this weekend, knowing full well that I'd seen every big release superhero move there for the past few years (when we were going to the theater that is). Gotta keep em begging for more I suppose.

Watched Being the Ricardos on Amazon. It was fine and didn't have the insufferable dialogue that Sorkin usually falls into. It was good dialogue but not the "we're all so clever" stuff. Kidman and Bardem were great. He is one of my favorite actors. Really seems to make roles his own.
