My understanding is this is how Wales normally plays.
That is not a fair reflection on how Wales usually play. They have real pace in Danial James and Gareth Bale, so they are capable of breaking quickly when attacks break down. I would say they are more of a pressing team, that is capable of moving the ball quickly through midfield.

Most teams set up to not lose the first games and I think statistically that is the case. The real worry for the US could be that England draw against Iran and then need to beat the then in the 2nd match. England traditionally start slowly (other than 1982) and we'll see what happens.

I think the timing of the games vs Iran will be a bit of a leveller for them.

I hate to be a conspiracy theorist, but this group is the absolute best shot Qatar could ask for, and now that offsides call?

I must be missing something pretty significant with that disallowed goal... Because to my eyes, there were still people behind the Qatar goalie, the guy
I presume they called wasn't even involved in that part of the play, and the goal scorer was NEVER in an offside position.

Sure looks fixed to me. Sorry to say, and I'm not one to go there. Again, unless I really missed something on the replay.

Watch on Telemundo, and they have the bonus of a better spelling of Qatar, at least on the cable listings.

I suspended my YouTubeTV about 6 weeks ago. Peacock has the Spanish broadcasts. According to FIFA’s rankings, Ecuador is 44th, and Qatar is 50th? Is that a charitable 50? Cuz from the half-hour I’ve been watching, Ecuador is putting on a clinic.

Qatar aren't a terrible side, they were Asian Champs 3 years ago and you saw them play the US in the Gold Cup semifinals.

But they looked slow and lacking ideas tonight.

It was! Just enough time that had it been a one goal game that called for Qatar getting some extra-extra time it still could have worked.

It's like a 2 foot forward pass straight up in the air that nobody touches, has back spin to the guy who was a foot beside the passer who is offside. Yeah, it's offside but that would never be picked up by the linesman in a million years. Only technology.

I disagree wholeheartedly - in the first half, Qatar made Ecuador look like 1970. I believe that they touched the ball in the Ecuadorian penalty are for the first time in the 88th minute.

So happy. I went on an epic rant against this WC last night in a group text. I blame the 12 hours in the car with the children.

This WC is like a flow chart where every choice was "corrupt" or "not", and they always chose corrupt.

The 'onelove' captains armbands have been banned and the sanction will be a yellow card if worn...

All the teams who planned on wearing the armbands assumed that fines would be imposed, as stated in the rules, but clearly FIFA have shit the bed and announced that yellow cards would be issued as a sanction.

The national football associations/federations have now told their captains not to wear the armbands and the LGBTQ+ community have gone bat shit crazy, saying the teams are weak and should wear the armbands and take the yellow cards, asking teams to swap captains every match.

If players/teams want to protest, spell out one love by lying on the pitch if you score or run up to the pitch-side camera and shout "one love" at the lens. Whatever, the players I am sure will find some way around this.

The issue was giving the WC to Qatar in the first instance and how it was done, plus loads of nations and their media have been quiet as fuck about it. The last WC was in Russia ffs...

I was supposed to do a Green Bay (to watch the Titans), New York round trip with Bazza, but he bailed and then work got in the way for me (recruitment is still impossible in the adult care sector as the Tories conspired to get 50,000 people living in adult residential care killed).

I will be watching at home (I have manged to get one day off) or in the local pub, with loads of English fans...

Shockingly bad defending from the Iranians. Like... you can tell me some of these guys play in top leagues, but the disorganization in the back is truly shambolic.

Make no mistake - clinical, lethal finishing from ENG. And they are gritty as hell in the middle of the park. All credit to them.

=-=-=-=

I don't understand why they are completely writing Iran off. Go win the next two and they are absolutely not "completely out of it." Of course it's dire, but they can still play Wales for a win and then see what they need against the US.

Iran boasts that they have the greatest defense in the world. In 2018 they only gave up 2 goals in a group with Spain, Portugal and Morocco. They were a goalpost away from winning the group. In 2022 qualifying they gave up 8 goals in 18 matches.

Today they just got destroyed. If Southgate doesn't hold this team back, they could be extremely dangerous going forward in the tournament. Group B is now a three team group for 2nd place. US-Wales starts this mini-group. US will know what it needs when it plays Iran last.
