The Sharks won (for a change) tonight in Dallas. Logan Couture got a Gordie Howe hat trick, which was both humorous and disturbing. Humorous because he never fights. Disturbing because he was attacked (and forced to fight) just because he delivered a good, legal check. That last part is something I wish the league would clean up. The Dallas player didn’t get an instigator penalty, but he certainly deserved one.

Golden Knights dropped coupons in each season ticket holder’s account for $1 hot dogs to celebrate Kessel’s 1000th straight game last night. Chef’s kiss. No notes.

Is it a shot on goal if the goalie stops a shot 3 feet wide of the net or is it just like a subjective thing like giving someone a hit or an error?

They are not supposed to counted as a shot on goal unless it would’ve scored if the goalie hadn’t been there. At least in theory.

Right, so it's a ruling. That's what I'm asking.

I really enjoy this Brock McGinn by the way. Pens too often get way too passy. This motherfucker just unloads. I think he might be my Willie Parker.

oh yeah definitely a ruling. and agreed it's really subjective - i think in fact that's why analysts in recent years look at shots attempted as a far better measure of team dominance, like shots directed *toward the net* or something.

If I were a good NHL GM I’d be checking in daily with Drury to see if he’s really to make some fucked up culture change trade. It’s either going to be that or Gallant at this point.

Thompson is like the 100th percentile result those of us who hug and kiss 1st rounders hope for when they're halfway through their team control and still not panning out. Good on Buffalo for sticking with him.

Worked out both sides. O’Reilly helped the Blues win a Cup. But Thompson was a throw-in in that deal.

i've been struggling to try to understand the Tage phenomenon for like 10 months.

Honestly, 12-13 months ago if the Sabres had *outright released* him I'd have been 100% ok with it. I maintained that he was one of the worst hockey players i'd ever seen play regular top 6 minutes; he had one damn curl and drag move he used for 2+ years and it worked occasionally but mostly he was horrific.

And then Granato puts him at center, somehow he gets confidence... and he's Mario Lemieux. wtactualf.

I guess the trade is working out. :P

(we still suck though and i still hate terry pegula and the Sabres for what they've done to my hockey fandom. i'm a bruised man dammit.)

An NYR account I follow said recently he'd always been able to rely on his hands and size until he got to the NHL and his skating has finally caught up.

yeah that's part of it for sure.

But not everything - honestly his decision-making was minor-league at best....it's remarkable i'm telling you, it's like a different player (....wait, does he have a twin??) just fking showed up last winter.

i'm sure the reality is a combination of everything - him deciding on some conscious and/or subconscious level to be more confident in his skating while also likely working on it... him playing center has been a difference, him playing for a coach who isn't almost actively sabotaging the team and seemingly gives him that confidence.

It's nice to have a win as a fan. Feels like it's been...uh.... a decade.

Not NHL but anytime Jagr has to suit up for a pro game it gets a post. Nearly 51-year old picked up 2 apples in emergency appearance.

I wonder how often a 5 vs 5 goal is scored where all players on the ice are under 24 and 1st round picks of that team.

The rangers are currently a middle six wing and bottom pair LD away from a complete roster and I have zero confidence Gallant can understand how to form those lines. Just an absolute mess in terms of refusing to nail 4th liners to the 4th line simply because they’re vets. More convinced than ever he’s a coach who improves a team but has a clear ceiling.

I think you're right about Gallant. But, don't bitch too much about your top-level team. It could be a lot worse (as some of us know too well.)
