You know what else is really telling/important in those two clips: Mcendry's lead-in question. Not just the wording, but her tone. In the first, she's straight up incredulous... In the second, she's downshifted significantly into more skeptically curious.
Seriously, go check it out. VERY telling at to how they were framed.

It was all Janay's fault.
After Goodell suspended Rice for two games in July, this person said, Goodell told several NFL owners that he felt it would have been insensitive to question Janay Rice's story because it would have come across as an indictment of her character. Two people familiar with the commissioner's thinking, including the owner, said they believe the thoroughness of the investigation, and Goodell's decision to suspend Rice for two games, both reflected Goodell's discomfort with challenging Janay Rice's story.

We should make a stand and not watch tonight.
A) Thursday night games suck anyways and it's a fucking stupid idea.
B) NFL making too much money on these stupid ideas and becoming arrogant.
C) Goodell hasn't been fired yet.

My wife was disgusted in me and giving me shit after I let it slip that I had drafted Ray Rice in my money fantasy league. I had to explain to her that I'd pick up Charlie Manson if he caught passes out of the backfield. But, to placate her, today I said that because I've now seen the video, I could officially suspended Rice indefinitely.

Re: Roger Godell's Terrible No Good Bad Day - the Rice video
Now, wait wait wait... We've got enough on this guy to not start doing what they are doing. He didn't mean it was ambiguous if he hit her not, he definitely told Goodell that he hit her... The ambiguity was around WHY he hit her, and the clear implication was that he did it in self-defense.
Now, we can all vibe that Goodell is straight up lying about what he saw and/or what he knew. But Rice told the Commissioner, as did Janay, that she CHARGED him and that allowed Goodell the ambiguity angle.
So, fucking hell. This shit needs flow charts just to keep up the lying about lies. 3D Chess.

Re: Roger Godell's Terrible No Good Bad Day - the Rice video
I'd be curious as to how many NFL fans are actually concerned about the actual domestic abuse aspect of this vs:
1) OMG the league punishments are inconsistent!
2) I hate the Ravens.
3) Goodell wronged my team once so this is a good opportunity to stick it to him.
I'm guessing not terribly high.

I'll maintain that reasons #2 and #3 would not influence too many, but thinking it through, I think that #1, definitely would.
But still, I do think it's close to a majority.
As I was typing, I remembered the Leonard Little story. Drunk driving, killed a woman - 8 game suspension.
Came back to the league, had a decent career and made some good money.
2004 drunk driving conviction again - no suspension.
Relatively speaking, there was very little outrage. So in Godell's defence, maybe he was following league protocol on how to deal with this type of person.

I guess I'm just in the Mr D camp that the NFL will get a very wide berth for shitty behavior before the fans will actually alter consumption. Nachos will still be had. Bud Light still quaffed. Fantasy teams still agonized over. This isn't even a blip on the radar.Pruitt wrote:My first reaction was that it would be pretty high.P.D.X. wrote:I'd be curious as to how many NFL fans are actually concerned about the actual domestic abuse aspect of this vs:

What is striking to me, in the last few days, is that every time the NFL says something, 3 or more unnamed sources turn up in an article calling bullshit.
Think about it from the perspective of someone in the security department, these guys have egos and they are basically being scapegoated and embarrassed by the league over and over and over again.
Fuck that, says unnamed source... We can get any tape we want.

Now that some time has passed, are we allowed to comment on the quality, timing and accuracy of that check hook? Ive got to believe more than a few folks have been touched by that one. Looked very reflexive to me.
Re: Roger Godell's Terrible No Good Bad Day - the Rice video
I'm completely blown away that the commissioner of the NFL and possibly the Ravens brass would so blatantly and without remorse try to cover up what I consider to a reprehensible act by Ray Rice. Is this not showing concern over the domestic abuse aspect of it? I mean, the guy hit a girl so hard that she left her feet and got knocked out cold. Do we really need to talk about how awful that is? Should we be like those people that try to make themselves look morally superior after a mass shooting because "OMG can you believe that! I would never do that!" completely missing that to make themselves look morally superior they have to compare themselves to a serial killer?P.D.X. wrote:I'd be curious as to how many NFL fans are actually concerned about the actual domestic abuse aspect of this vs:
