Right? And what’s the deal with this “Southern Ocean” BS? I don’t know what teachers are teaching these days, but that’s clearly incorrect.

When that became a thing I welcomed it. That was too big an area without natural reasons like Atlantic and pacific for the name it had! Trust me I’m a white man so kind of an expert in diminishing Indians.

Lol. I actually have a story about the Southern Ocean, actually. Massachusetts used to do this thing called the MCAS standardized test for every even numbered grade. (Maybe they still do it. I don't know.)

So my sister brings home this 2nd grade assignment for it and it's like "Here's the earth. I have 7 _____ . I have 4 ______ . I have..." and so on. There was like a dozen facts about earth.

So her and my mom get it filled out but they ask me what the earth has 4 of since it wasn't obvious to them. I say "hemispheres." So they fill that in and complete it. The next day my sister comes home from school and said "the answer was the earth has 4 oceans." I figured the word 'hemisphere' was too big for a 7 year old so it made sense, but I double checked and found 'Southern Ocean' in some encyclopedia. To double check, my mother actually called some marine biologist at Harvard and he confirmed. Dude was legitimately excited and was hoping I'd want to become a marine biologist. (I didn't, but that does sound very cool.)

The next day my mom went to school to pick up my sister and to point out the error. She was told off by some teacher and got into an argument about it.

Totally weird, but I still can't believe this entire charade happened. Thanks, EARTH.

My daughter, a math major, also minored in marine biology. At one point, she considered it for her major. But, she didn’t get the joke when I exclaimed, “a marine biologist? Like George Costanza?”

Unlike the required reading thread which has made me feel young (relative to you all), I just ordered a new baseball (softball) glove. By my count, this will be the 5th of my life. Odds are I'll never need to buy another one.

I was recently marveling at how my glove is in remarkable condition. Bought it in 1992, it’s been in basements, garages and a shed all these years. The leather straps on my lacrosse stick disintegrated when I touched it. Rawlings does good work.

Just finished a 4.5 mile walk with my dog, feeling great, and then I get the mail and inside is a package from the government entitled "Canada Pension Plan - Is It Time To Apply"

Because you see, I have the option of starting my (formerly known as) "Old Age pension" at 60.

60!

(I turn 60 in November)

I'm going to crunch the numbers and then go take a lie down. I guess this is a rite of passage, but come on...

I started taking my social security benefit as early as I could - at age 62. Not because I need it to live on. But, because with the shit the R's might pull, the funds might run out at some point.

Was watching Raiders of the Lost Ark last night and realized more time had passed since its release (42 years) than between the release of the movie and the period it portrays (roughly 40 years).

Oh good god!

My wife crunched the numbers and it looks like I won't start getting the pension until I'm 65.

Doesn't make me feel any younger though...

Google Image search tells me it's a music video from Beyonce and Brittany Spears. I guess there was no part two, so the "to be continued" never happened?

I’ve been hearing Bonnie Raitt’s music for 40-some years, now. So, I’m somewhat bemused by social media’s indignant protests of her winning the Grammy, that go something like, “who the fuck is this unknown woman who sings songs nobody has heard?!”

While I'm 1000% in the same boat on the first part, shit I just admitted I didn't know suspicious minds was an elvis joint until someone told me well after I thought Yoakam was the first. Now, I was aware of the idea of Elvis Presley, but I can't get too worked up over the youths not knowing everyone. Raitt looked stunned, despite already having won 2 awards.

I've known who she is for decades, of course, but I've never found her music particularly interesting. The best thing I can say about her is that musicians have always seemed to like and respect her. But her music always just seemed like B+ bar blues stuff.

Bonnie Raitt used to jam with Little Feat to keep their sessions alive when Lowell George was too wasted to get out of bed.

Kids taking to social media scoffing at her relevance come off ignorant. Quite so, in fact.

The only demonstrably better slide guitarists in rock and roll would be Duane Allman and probably Sonny Landreth. She's Derek Trucks-level of slide guitar.

But then again, the kids don't listen to anything you would even remotely call rock and roll these days.

My lasting Bonnie memory is hearing Something to Talk About (too) regularly piped in over the speakers of the dollar store at the Dover Mall where I worked the summer of 1991.

Though one of the radio stations I currently listen to on a daily basis played one of her new songs (Made Up Mind) a lot last year. And my favorite podcast did an episode on I Can't Make You Love Me last year, too.

I wanted to post this song from a Toots and The Maytals album where they had a bunch of special guests (including Bonnie Raitt on this song).

I would have guessed that the album was 10 years old... it came out in 2004.

Good song anyway...
