I think you're right about Gallant. But, don't bitch too much about your top-level team. It could be a lot worse (as some of us know too well.)
Hey, the Sharks won last ight!

And it's the regular season, play your 4th line as much as possible without losing too much.

It’s more pre-bitching. We’ve got a half dozen kids who would easily go for 1st rounders plus that aren’t under contract and a truly fucked up cap. The only solve is a Panarin trade but I have no idea how they could go about finding one given his age, cap hit and movement clauses.

Yeah, that somehow sounds worse.

Dude, ESPN+ is like 5 bucks a month. You get every non-nationally televised or locally televised game.

It used to be the case that I got every NJ, NYR and NYI game on local TV. Add in the national games they played and 20-30 games was plenty for the number of opportunities I actually had to sit down and watch a full game.

Now my cable provider is in a years long dispute with MSG so even when I had ESPN+ last year all of those NJ/NY games were blacked out.

But yeah the push alerts were bad the last two games.

I typically don't have the bandwidth to follow the Caps much until December and this year was no different. Even with the Ovi goal watch... Meh, it was inevitable he'd catch Gordie, so I wasn't tuning in much to see that climb.

When I did tune it at the beginning of the month, They were somewhere around 9th or 10th place in the Metro and things looked grim. 3ish weeks later and they are in a playoff spot and have rattled off 5 wins in a row and something like 10 of 11.

But, man... Talk about a team showing it's age. Backstrom, Wilson, Oshie and now Carlson all out with injuries. There are a slew of others, but those guys are obviously core.

We went to the Kraken-Oilers game last night. GF's daughter's new "Friend" is a former minor league/juniors hockey player (he played professionally in Germany for a few years before figuring out that he wasn't going to make it to the NHL) so it was his idea.

I may not know much about hockey, but I do know that giving up 3 goals in the first 4 minutes of the game is a bad thing (Oilers won 7-2). And giving Connor McDavid an open shot is not a good idea.

Still...a fun time...but wow, is going to a Kraken game expensive.

$5.5M is a decent sized cap hit for a lot teams at this point in the season (even pro-rated down to about $2.75m at this point). Looking at CapFriendly there's only about half the league that could have claimed him without any kind of equal cap dump and most of those teams are trying to lose for lottery balls at this point.

There's just no room to make deals or sign players. I believe at least half the league (16 teams) are right up against the cap and even LTIR to make more space. Can't take these sorts of gambles for nothing. They will want to work on a deal with Detroit to get something back.

The Wings are/were also facing a little bit of a roster crunch with Robby Fabbri returning from injury (and Tyler Bertuzzi close to the same) combined with some of their prospects (Joe Veleno, Jonatan Berggren - looks like he's not on the current roster, and Elmer Soderblom) playing well enough to merit consideration for sticking around the top club. Waiving Vrana right after extending his stint with Grand Rapids for conditioning to two weeks was a play at trying to sneak him and his salary ($5.25 mill cap hit this year and next) through after he spent two months in the players assistance program, especially since he's not ready to come back after three games.

There, in dsafe's last sentence, is what I imagine played a decent sized role here.

I've been rooting for Vrana, who was a fun young guy for the Caps when he got traded for Mantha.

But that salary, with an issue with injuries... And I know we're all supposed to ignore the Player Assistance stint, but... That's what the tweet is saying/not saying.

Re: NHL 2022-23

There has been some media reaction trying to put the Wings and Vrana at odds with each other, but this seems like a positive for Vrana.

He plays in a lower pressure environment until he's ready to play at the NHL level. Contract is the same. He's not uprooting his entire life while still dealing with whatever led to him entering the players assistance program.

It was a risk by the Red Wings, but a calculated one. They very possibly could have also had a long discussion with Vrana before putting him on waivers to explain everything, including the thought process that they didn't think he was going to get claimed because of his entire situation, and just kept it in-house.

no you were right, that 1st period or at least first 15 minutes was absolutely all USA.

the 2 goals taken away from USA were tough and that first one especially just sapped them.

Right?

Ya know, I can clearly remember watching the Vegas game in Pittsburgh earlier this season and I think we actually came back from behind to win that but I recall the whole time thinking "Holy fuck this team is so much better than us."

Not wrong, apparently.

Vegas is lucky to have dudes coming back from injury. Losing Eichel or Stone or Pietrangelo for the playoffs would mean no way to win the Cup. But for now they’re getting healthy ar least.
