I actually agree that West Ham probably* got screwed. Whatever foul there may have been on Mendy was after he'd already inexplicable lost the ball.
* That said, I don't know the rules on fouls on goalkeepers. It may be standard that nearly any contact is a foul AND that there is no consideration of whether it directly affects the play or not.
Still, really bad play by Mendy. He's off to a really shaky start this year. The ridiculous play against Leeds where Aronson just took the ball from him, plus the first goal in this West Ham game where he very meekly punched the ball like two feet.
That's not a foul for me. Announcer I heard reviewing the play said if anything, could have called Mendy for a foul as he ran into the attacker.
I think VAR was out of line calling back the Arsenal goal 10 minutes in for a foul by Odegaard. If the ref called a foul at the time, I wouldn't have been upset. Ref was perfectly positioned and looking at the play and was very close. He saw it, felt it wasn't a foul and let play continue. For VAR to review something that happened before the buildup to the goal and make a determination on a subject foul call that could go either way is just too much of a reach. I like VAR for offside calls, handballs and fouls in the box, but looking back for a borderline tackle in midfield that occurred before a buildup to a goal is ridiculous.

Well, that makes less sense than no foul. Mendy clearly got to the ball first and was then hit by the attacking player. I think it probably should have been no-call, but again, the rules do protect goalies.

I think it's highly unusual to see a ref let play continue with a goalie down injured, but Mendy really seemed to milk it knowing he was caught out.

For my money, wasn't a foul. Mendy knew he'd screwed the pooch and basically forced the ref to make a call. Yes, there is an overall prediliction to "protect" goalies, but less so than when I played, and it still doesn't say anywhere in the rule book that a keeper being down (of his own volition, mind you) and starts writhing around is an automatic call.
You can lead a horse to fish, but you can't fish out a horse.
Of all the big VAR calls this weekend, the only one I thought was correctly ruled a foul was the Newcastle player smashing into the CP keeper. As long as I've been watching the game, launching yourself into the keeper is always a foul and reason to disallow the goal. There was a question of whether he was pushed, but that is a doubt that is historically resolved in favor of the defense, and I don't know why it was missed in real time.
The others were certainly callable as fouls, but well within a ref's discretion to let go as part of game management. As Michael Owen said on Twitter afterwards, the point is not to re-referee the game, but that's what it will become (if it's not there already).

I was just joking with the "Tuchel Out" posting. Figured Abrahamovich is no longer in charge, no way anyone gets fired this early.
I was wondering if this was "American owners and tension with face of American soccer on your team"...but from the articles I am seeing this morning it seems that is not it.
Elizabeth Regina about to kick the silver bucket. PL can’t take a week off this season. Gonna be interesting to see the tributes at matches this week*.

Watching the community Shield....watching Haaland against VVD this season is gonna be fun. He's gonna eat other central defenders alive.
And Darwin Nunez is going to be a nice addition to Liverpool.
(of course, Haaland just missed a sitter)
Haaland will also eat Champions League central defenders
he is really a powerful central forward
I believe in astrology, so who has a female Pisces zodiac sign PM me. The best pair for my sign - Scorpio is Pisces, the Scorpio compatibility chart approves my words

Welcome, new Swamper!
Jim Hus joins the Swamp, and the Queen dies. Good job, Robespierre.
My avatar corresponds on my place in the Swamp posting list with the all-time Home Run list. Number 45 is Paul Konerko with 439.
Spurs fans almost blew the roof off the stadium for each of Son's goals. Two of which were classics.
But if you get a chance to see it - Bentancur's goal was phenomenal. It also showed just how abject Leicester's midfield and defending are. Don't sleep on betting on them to go down.
I’ve loved many of our previous strikers but I’ll also admit I’ve seen that same KDB pass end in a goal kick dozens of times before this season. Pretty insane.
