As a general rule, I don't mind the Sharks' two biggest rivals beating up each other. Two goonish teams.

Late. Didn’t target, didn’t leave his feet. Kase had his head down. I wouldn’t suspend him. 2 for interference and a 10/game.

2nd...while he did not leave his feet he could have avoided hitting him the head. That is a suspension.

That hit needs to be out of the game. Hit him in the chest. It hurts like hell, sends a message about entering the zone, and doesn't fuck a dudes brain up.

none. 5 and a game deemed sufficient.

More stories about Fertitta meeting with Bettman. NHL to Houston is going to happen before end of the decade. Only question is if it’s an expansion team or moving Calgary, Phoenix, Carolina or the Islanders

It seems like there's a reason they don't expect them to move, but the Panthers are a joke.

Arena issues are the big driver in Phoenix, Long Island and Calgary. Attendance issues in NC and Miami are apparently secondary.

kind of burnt out on expansion outrage esp to non-Quebec cities :) but even though it was some time ago, Houston has a history at least. And if we could somehow see these jerseys again I'm in:

This could be the cynic in me, but I think the NHL would prefer to go to Houston via expansion and just equalize the conferences (and get each owner a fresh $15M each).

Houston would drop in nicely into the Central Division. Of course the logical thing to do would be to just cut bait in Phoenix (though I really believe that situation would be vastly improved by a downtown arena).

The issue with expansion is that it theoretically has to be opened to everyone which means making a big show of taking Quebecor's money again and fucking them over. And what happens if Seattle puts together an actual bid this time.

So if I had a magic wand, I'd say expand to Houston and move NYI to Quebec City, but force them to change their name and give up any history as the Islanders (like the Ravens had to do when the Browns moved).

Then if Long Island can work out an arena situation, they get first crack at moving either Carolina or Miami, either or both of which might have to give up the ghost at some point in the next few years.

I hate the process of moving a team then giving a new one later, it just fucks up all kind of history. The Brooklyn move was as bad as it gets (I was real wrong on that one), but either stick with it or decide Long Island never has an NHL team again.

Fair I suppose. I just hate to see them lose their team, but it's hard to argue the NYC area needs three NHL teams these days, especially given how poor the move to Brooklyn has gone.

also guys - that picture. can we get some love for Gordie and Willy "dead ringer for Brian Leetch" Lidstrom there.

i really want this if they'd wear their WHA sweaters.

also Thurman Thomas was an Aeros fan as a kid, founded his love of hockey. completely irrelevant but I thought I'd throw that in the mix.

I half expect that if we were to pan out there'd be 7 barrels at center ice that they made Marty Howe jump over just to fuck with him.

fuck it, just cancel the NHL and bring back the WHA in total.

Friedman's 31 thoughts on Thanksgiving

One on the Houston angle:

23. There was a rumour about a week and a half ago that Flames owner Murray Edwards had met with Houston’s ownership. That was quickly denied, and then we learned the truth: The Tilson Fertitta meeting was with the NHL. Everyone involved in the Calgary situation needed to take a timeout after a bitter, brutal and nasty election, but the biggest question is, what happens if no progress is made in, say, two years? That ownership group is getting older and Edwards now lives in the United Kingdom.

Ron MacLean said the team gets sold locally, and my default is there is no way the Flames are moving to Houston. But, if you are cashing out, what makes you more money? A sale to Houston or to Calgary with the Saddledome?

So is Patrick Kane’s rep fully rehabilitated or is there just no other American player that can read an ad?

I said something remarkably similar to my buddy the other night. I mean, I'm not even really certain why they need an American player, but even if they do surely there's gotta be someone who isn't so rapey.

While I wouldn't defend the cross-check or necessarily oppose the 4-game suspension, it is worth noting that this isn't any worse than lots of other hits that got two/one games or less. As always, they just spin the big wheel o' justice to determine suspension length.

Agreed. In a bubble, I'm all for it, but given infinite prior comps and the fact that Matthew Tkachuk is so deserving of cross-checks to the head and/or neck makes this is a very weird one.
