I am a bit depressed for the NHL, first that the Slapshot-style game-opening brawl even occurred in the Calgary-Vancouver game. But then, reading the comments in the TSN story, most people were actually applauding it. Old time hockey, my ass. That ain't hockey, it's roller derby.

Also of note was that Detroit tied up their game with the Kings on a ricochet off the netting for a late goal. NHL does not review. They really ought to review goals.

And, Martin St. Louis scored four goals in a loss. Amazing. Maybe it really is 1984 again.

There should be a name for that. Like "the Teemu Selanne hat-trick" (circa '93).

Don't be depressed the NHL makes it's own bed. The solution is simple, ban fighting like any other normal sport.
The NHL refuses to do it so deep down inside, they love this stuff.

It's a Tortorella thing, he's an idiot. It happened with the Devils and Rangers last year.

In this case I think the Flames needed it. They haven't won a game since December 23 (12 consecutive losses). And it's the Canucks who run their mouths and are cheapshot artists for years so they needed to get some knuckle-sandwiches.

I'm glad the Canucks are in the same division as the California teams now so they can get owned and whine some more.

Pathetic.
“I don’t think anybody expected that,” said Flames defenceman Chris Butler, one of eight players ejected from the game.
Really? What were you expecting then? Because there weren't any hockey players on the ice.
Calgary heavyweight Brian McGrattan was left bloodied in a fight with Vancouver tough guy Tom Sestito. After the fight Sestito patted McGrattan on the back of the head.
Pathetic. But it isn't "staged", right? And that loveydovey business is just an accident. On "Hockey Day In Canada" no less.

Completely unwatchable.

Quietly, the best team in the NHL lately has been . . . Columbus? Eight straight wins, six real ones, against some pretty good teams.

At least we have some mediocre pop music to kill the time. Oh wait, mediocre pop music from the 60s, which is pretty good, (especially in comparison to contemporary crap.)

Southside!

(Always the first band I associate with hockey. All those winter afternoons on the beach at the Shore.)

The bass player is wearing gloves. Noted.

Not lip syncing. Cacophonous joy.

ETA: I went to a hockey game and a Southside Johnnie show broke out.

the clip they just showed on NBC of the two refs discussing why the first Rangers goal was allowed to stand, if hockey wants to advance in today's world, we should always hear that live, like in rugby.

4th to 13th in the Eastern Conference

Toronto 60
Montreal 59
NY Rangers 59
Detroit 57
Columbus 56
Philly 56
Carolina 55
New Jersey 55
Washington 54
Ottawa 54

This is why the NHL loves the loser point.

Will be going to the Sharks/Kings game with my daughter tonight. Should be fun, especially with her along. Evenly matched teams that feel a real rivalry (and, the Tomas Hertl injury last time they played fans the flames). The fans really get into it against the SoCal rivals, anyway, and many fans blame the a knee-on-knee Hertl injury on Dustin Brown, so he is a public enemy. Plus, fair number of Kings fans in the stands, to ignite further passion.

Heh. It was a fun night, despite the 1-0 Sharks' loss. The crowd booed Dustin Brown every time he touched the puck, and Brown was off his game. On the post-game radio show, they said Brown had zero hits and (I didn't notice this but they said) he got embarrassed at the beginning of the game in front of the Kings' bench, when he turned down an invitation to scrap with Tommy Wingels (who isn't even much of a fighter - but there is lingering bad blood over the Hertl knee-on-knee injury).

My daughter is normally pretty reserved, and would never do anything in public to draw attention to herself. But, last night, she got a taste of the arbitrary NHL officiating, and her sense of fairness was quite upset. Not that she was an unbiased observer or anything... "Dad, did you see that? He was holding the guy's stick, right in front of the referee and he didn't call it!"... "Dad, did you see that? The referee must be blind! The Kings guy pushed him right in the face! That should be a penalty, right?!... Dad, these referees must be for the Kings!... etc.

I watched the 3rd period and your daughter was right.

I don't get the retribution thing in hockey. Brown hit Hertl yes but he wasn't suspended for it. The league has decided. Move on.

Like The Oilers trying to fight Kassien every time for his hit on Gagner. He was suspended 8 games for it, the issue is finished.

People forget, this is how Steve Moore nearly got killed.

It doesn't happen in football. The next time the Patriots and Browns play, are they going to target TJ Ward every time he's out there.

Crazy. A 59 save shutout. Most saves ever in an NHL shutout. The Oilers also blocked 22 shots. The Sharks had numerous really good chances...

Eta: 102 shots toward the net. 59 on goal, 22 blocks, 19 missed net. One post. One crossbar.

Scottie: news out of Vancouver is that Hamhuis has a conclusion and is questionable to fly to Sochi.

If Babcock wants to keep his 4 left-handed and 4 right-handed shots for defensemen then Phaneuf or Giordano are next in line.

I agree but Seabrook shoots right and remember he was a disaster in the Vancouver games, so much so 21 year old Drew Doughty took over most of his minutes.
