McIlrath has no idea what they want out of him. You could see he wasn't really throwing but it was still ridiculous.
Re: 2016/2017 NHL Regular Season Thread
More and more confident this will be the case with Miller (and a prospect/pick) going the other way. Vatanen is a big need but this one is going to make me super sad if it happens. And if its for Fowler (and not as a pass for Trouba (which I doubt would be the case given how hard we're scouting)) I'll die. Miller for Fowler and I die.mister d wrote:Good: Vatanen

I don't watch the Ducks closely, and I haven't checked Cam Fowler's Corsi or anything, but is he that bad? He was picked for the Olympic team a couple years ago, and he is on their first power play unit. He was a stud in juniors.

Mr D, or anyone else, what sites are you hitting up for hockey these days? Oiler sent me a text asking that question, and lamenting the loss of General Fanager (and Capgeek and War on Ice before it).
My response to him was, "I'm all about Hockeyviz/@Ineffectivemath/Micah Blake McCurdy (that's all the same guy). I'm not a huge fan of @omgitsdomi. I also don't have them organized into a Twitter list or anything. I'll let you know what else as I come across it. The HockeyPDOcast with Dimitri Filipovich is great. I'd probably start there and deep dive his guests. @RegressedPDO is good too."

Dylan Strome update: he played 14 minutes last night, recorded an assist, won 25% of his face-offs. Don't know anything more than that. Not sure if he'll stick in the line-up. The Coyotes lost to Ottawa, 7-4. That's not good.

Re: 2016/2017 NHL Regular Season Thread
James Mirtle just tweeted that 10% of current NHL players are eligible for the Calder Trophy (rookie of the year). That number kind of jumps out, but I'm not sure how it compares to previous seasons. And a number of players will be sent back to juniors after a handful of games, so the number is probably meaningless anyway. Also, 10% is like 2 or 3 players per team. So, this is something that sounds really interesting at first, then grows less interesting. Whatever. Still a fun thought/research exercise for anybody willing to do the work.
Mirtle also tweeted that 28% of tonight's Leafs/Jets game is Calder-eligible. That is truly a remarkable number.

Re: 2016/2017 NHL Regular Season Thread
This methodology might suck, but the hockey-reference play index says 884 non-goalies played at least 1 game in 2000-01. 197 of them were rookies. That's 22%. In 2010-11, it was 214 out of 891 (24%).bapo! wrote:James Mirtle just tweeted that 10% of current NHL players are eligible for the Calder Trophy (rookie of the year). Re: 2016/2017 NHL Regular Season Thread
Yeah, there will always be short-term injury call-ups during the season. So, an opening-night roster might be more meaningful than a January roster. Except for the fact that junior-eligible players will be back in juniors by late-October. So, maybe meaningless! Who knows?!Ryan wrote:Lots of call-ups throughout the season I guess?

One of those guys who resides in between what stats and non-stats fans think, but his rep does seem to exceed his production so ... Jack Johnson-y? I imagine he'd be a fine 2LD behind McDonagh but at $4MM per and what I assume would be a high trade cost doesn't interest me.sancarlos wrote:I don't watch the Ducks closely, and I haven't checked Cam Fowler's Corsi or anything, but is he that bad? Re: 2016/2017 NHL Regular Season Thread
I'm guessing/betting a lot of stat absolutists are going to look stupid in ~5 years because "best now" doesn't mean "correct". Like the subset of Rangers fans argued Boyle was actually really good and not a guy who will have solid possession numbers almost by accident because he's an offensive defenseman playing impossibly sheltered minutes under a coach who strongly believes in delineated roles. In those instances, context dependencies like zone starts and QoC are acknowledged but waved away as immaterial to the overall conversation. Most of the time they'll acknowledge that of course he wouldn't succeed playing 23 minutes as a top pair shutdown. I've tried to understand how the latter doesn't invalidate the former but its gotten me nowhere. So I like Fenwick (not Corsi so much) at a team level but at a player level its iffy at best and definitely not a catch-all.
That said, Russell almost assuredly will look pretty bad in anything other than bottom pair work because he's of the Girardi/MacDonald school of "absorb the pressure" and that doesn't fly anymore.

I think Dan Boyle was once excellent offensively, while competent defensively. Then he got old and the descent was quick. Gotta give Doug Wilson credit for recognizing it was time to cut bait when he did.

Gotta think if approved and ground broken by next spring this means NHL will expand to Seattle for 2019-2020 season.
ETA: If that happens, gotta think they move Las Vegas to the Central Division and put Seattle in the Pacific since they wouldn't break up Calgary and Edmonton (the only two other teams it would make sense to move.)

Given our high number of SoCal visitors/transplants, I'm guessing the NHL will be more than happy to market rivalries with LA/Anaheim. Edm and Cal to the Central and Seattle and Vegas to the Pacific would solve all.brian wrote:Yeah, maybe.
