While true in most situations, it's me. As a kid, they seemed like heroes living a dream, as I get older, it was about looking at all the exotic women from foreign countries in peak physical condition, now I'm too old to see them as anything other than kids who happened to qualify for an event.

Not sure where to put this...but the guy setting the pace at a marathon said fuck it and ended up winning. Does that piss off the people behind him or is all fair in love and running?

There will be some hurt feelings, but that's part of elite racing. Most guys designated to do the rabbiting aren't going to be able to beat elite runners, especially after setting the pace from the front for so long. So given how hard it is to do, any honest elite runner is going to mostly just take off their hat to the guy.

Yeah, it's rare, but it happens. Rabbits at that level are pretty near world-class themselves, so it's natural for them to wonder if they couldn't just continue on.

Japanese polls show that 60 to 80% of Japanese people believe the Olympics should be canceled.

Cancel the Olympics? Japanese people say yes, but IOC says no

The easy solution is for the Japanese workers to go on strike. Can't have an Olympics without staff or volunteers.

Alternatively, maybe seems good? The numbers are trending up but they aren't in a Bazril or India-type meltdown or anything, so if the games are going ahead no matter what then doing them without spectators sounds like the safest choice.

No Spectators at the Olympics.

What a waste of cash -
It means Tokyo’s newly rebuilt 68,000-capacity National Stadium, which was not completed in time for the 2019 Rugby World Cup as initially hoped, will be empty throughout the tournament, symbolizing the vast sums of money invested in these Olympics with little reward for the people of Japan or the country’s economy.

The stadium cost around 157 billion yen ($1.4 billion) to rebuild, according to official figures. The total cost of the Games is officially estimated at $15.4 billion, but government audits suggest the real cost was twice as high. All but $6.7 billion is public money, with the International Olympic Committee contributing only about $1.5 billion.

It's too bad. Maybe in the future Japan can use it as it's national stadium like Wembley. (or give it to West Ham)

Just maybe it's time for team USA to abandon the all star teams and just get a bunch of guys that want to make it a priority and play them. Pretty clear this method of selection is done. Go find a 4 year committed team and then supplement with 3 rotating stars depending on form, playoffs and skill sets.

Durant, Green and Love are all former Olympians and regulars on international teams. Kind of an insult to suggest that they or any of the other guys on the team are not "committed". It's 2021, you're not just going to be able to roll the ball out there and beat teams from a lot of other countries easily. They've been playing basketball for quite some time as well.

When it's all said and done and they've all gotten a few games together they'll still be favored to win the gold, but if anyone thinks that plugging 12 B-list guys together into a "national team" is gonna beat the likes of Australia or Spain or even Serbia they're sorely mistaken.

Also, the United States hasn't lost an Olympics game in 17 YEARS. That's a 25-game winning streak. Yet, it's always the sky is falling when the national team loses a meaningless exhibition game.

American basketball fans make the Brits relationship with their soccer team look positively sane and healthy.

Certainly not 12 b-list guys. Maybe 2-3. What I'm saying is they could fill spots 4-12 with guys whose job is Team USA when they're not playing God knows where. Bring in the A list guys to fill in key roles and play like that. Can't bring in 12 guys that want run and whom are all accustomed to being focal points. Best point, best scorer, best big and play like that. Let those guys get 40 minutes. Didn't see either game but they used to win with pressure and depth and uptempo. Assuming they can't turnover other teams as much because quality is improved I'd say having 10 all stars isn't needed unless you plan to play like Nolan Richardson.

This team feels much more thrown together without a plan than any other going back to the original Dream Team. A case in point is the plan to incorporate Middleton, Holiday and Booker after the Finals, which if it goes to 7 games will end the day before the opening ceremonies. I’m pretty skeptical that those guys will actually make it to Tokyo, and even if they do, I can’t see us getting very much out of them. And so Plan B would be to give those spots to….Keldon Johnson and Saddiq Bey?

There were a lot of factors that were beyond USAB’s control here, but I don’t think they did a very good job with the factors they do control.

Nigeria made 20 threes, shooting 47.6 percent from beyond the arc in a three-point win. Australia shot nearly 60% on twos as Patty mills torched Lillard continuously. Both outrebounded the US, who has played Adebayo under 17 minutes per game and Love three minutes total (Lillard is tied for second on the team in rebounding behind Tatum, who has 10 in two games). Lillard is their de facto point guard until Paul and Holiday go straight from the Finals to Japan and has fewer assists than Jerami Grant.

Write-up in the Athletic says that the guys are getting in shape because they've been trying to recover this past accelerated season and the shortened offseason that preceded it. Throw in that they have hardly played together (assist percentage vs US - Nigeria 65.6%, Australia 63.9%) and are playing under several different rules that they almost literally never play under (and didn't grow up playing) and it makes sense they're having tough go.

Looking at the stars currently there, I'd suggest pulling Lillard from the lineup and starting Durant-Draymond-Adebayo-Tatum-Beal. Lose about zero in playmaking, get significantly better on defense and rebounding.

So you want a handful of guys to forgo their careers for 4 years just to play in the Olympics? How many international competitions does USA Basketball play to keep these guys in peak condition? Are they going to schedule 80 or so friendlies a year to keep them in form? For 4 years? To play in one fucking Olympics that nobody cares about? Who is going to pay them, and why? Throw together 12 guys for a couple of weeks, and if they don't win the gold, so what?
