I think I heard 5k fans allowed but looks slimmer than that (unless they're mostly on the camera side).

Jamaica has a fairly simple game plan tonight of wrestling moves and set pieces. I'm becoming less worried about the first, but the other part is still a concern.

Is that just shit defense allowing the shot to get off in the first place?

I don’t think so. Not sure that was something you ordinarily worry about happening from there?

Like, 99 times out of 100 a shot from there ends up 30 rows up in the stands, right?

Sure - but i guess that’s sort of my point / takes a world class shot - how often do even the best pull that off? Nonlinear may be along to tell me I am wrong .

Sure - but - and again, I am as far from expert on this as it can get - a hard close out that risks a foul and free kick or a hard close out and someone runs into space behind the close out to create a dangerous opportunity more likely to lead to problems than worrying about THAT kind of strike from there , no? Dunno. Feels like you just say “great hit” and move on.

I guess I just assumed it was a rarity because you don't see it too often and there's a seemingly simple fix? I don't know. That's why I asked.

Second question: The tackle on Adams seemed insanely reckless and a potential disaster if he doesn't fling himself into the air. Is DM our most shallow position, atleast in terms of the drop from top choice to backup plan?

Yeah, I geniunely don't know either. I would assume it is a rarity because it is such a hard shot as opposed to a rarity because it is space that is usually closed down. Hope someone who has a better handle can weigh in.

Jamaica is probably the only team that can knock the USA out of the top 4, so not losing to them is a plus.

From what I saw of the game (not the whole thing), both fullbacks were awful. That plus a shaky keeper led to a lot more clenched butthole than there should have been.

re: the discussion we had about the jamaica goal, MrD - here is what Wahl has:
• Michail Antonio’s screamer changed the game. The U.S. was totally bossing the match and ahead 1-0 when Antonio, the ever-dangerous West Ham United forward, hit an absolutely incredible shot from distance to beat Zack Steffen. Seriously, I can’t even describe the sound in the stadium when Antonio’s foot hit the ball. It was a thunderclap. Could Steffen have done more? No. Could Adams have kept himself from overpursuing? It’s hard to fault him on it. Jurgen Klinsmann used to say that the defense was always at fault somehow when it conceded a goal. But in this case I don’t necessarily believe that. Sometimes a player just makes a remarkable play. That’s what Antonio did. He’s a crazy-good game-changing talent. And it gave life after that to Jamaica, which got much more into the flow of the game and no longer looked like it would be overrun by the USMNT. Jamaica is still alive in this tournament.

I had a similar take on Antonio’s goal as Wahl. I watched the replay to see why nobody closed him down, but Adams was all over him. Antonio made a great, quick little cut to make space to get the shot off. Adams didn’t over commit or dive in, it was just too quick a cut for Adams to shift his momentum. Pure class. Shot didn’t look too far away from Steffen, but with that pace, can’t blame Steffen for not reaching it.

As for Weah’s goal, it looked like he hit the C button in NHL ‘93. Such a brilliant move. His quick feet getting the touch and pass to Pepi was crazy, then the run and way he beat the defenders was beautiful. I hope Rog gives it the 5 minute super slowmo breakdown video it deserves.
