We will be in Elizabeth Fri-Sun/Mon. Probably get down into Louisville to shoot for a few hours and get away fro the crowds if you can sneak out.
Tournament is slotted to run from 8-4, and there aren't rally any breaks. So I will have to pass. We should meet int he middle some day though.
Hold on, I'm trying to see if Jack London ever gets this fire built or not.

When I moved here from MI, the first few times schools were closed due to a few inches, I was just blown away. The idea that school facilities had to be absolutely completely clear for them to open was just bizarre. And you never really get used to that mentality.

Put it this way, I grew up with snow, but I learned to drive here... Yet I have absolutely no issues driving in the snow. It's absolutely drilled into people here that snow = DANGER!! My wife, who grew up here, is a fine driver... Refuses to even consider driving in the snow. Meanwhile, I'm one of the guys in our 'hood that will drive in deep snow to pre-plow the streets if the County doesn't get to us on Day 1 (used to happen a LOT, where they'd plow the main street but not get to side streets for 2, 3 days.)
It has very little to do with "knowing how to drive in snow." It has a lot more to do with the amount of equipment for salting/sanding/plowing. It has even more to do with tires. In places where it snows a lot, people use snow or winter tires and they often have chains, just in case. South of the Mason-Dixon line, nobody uses those. All vehicles use All-Season or Summer tires that suck in the snow. No amount of "knowing how" makes a difference if you can't grip the road.

As an example, here is a video comparing RWD (which should suck in snow) with winter tires vs. AWD with summer tires. There's no comparison.

While I understand the point you're trying to make, my main complain is that people typically fall in 1 of 2 categories around here.

1) Oh my g-d is snowing and the roads are slick. I should drive 10mph everywhere I go regardless of the passability/plowedness of the roads to make sure everyone is safe! (This is unsafe and causes accidents).

2) Oh wow, it's snowing. I guess I should not change my asshole driving habits at all, refuse to slow down, leave space or be courteous to other motorists in any way at all. Surely this won't cause any problems. (This is unsafe and causes accidents)

I agree proper equipment would help, but so would everyone reducing their speed by 10-15 mph and just leaving a little bit of goddamn room for people to maneuver.

I think it's a circular thing. It's harder to drive on untreated roads with summer tires, so folks panic and overreact. The overconfident idiots are found everywhere though.

We had a super wet summer last year. Like rain 23 out of 30 days or something very un-Colorado. There were areas that still weren't out of drought status.

The rain is gone hereabouts, and folks are starting to wring their hands again about our missing El Nino.

Season-to-date, NorCal has had lots of moisture. But, we need it to continue for a couple more months.

Figured I'd do one shoveling this morning to make it easier after it stops. I got three rows shoveled on my driveway before I gave up. Way too heavy...afraid I was going to give myself a heart attack. Might just be waiting for this one to melt on its own...HOA be damned.

Not even going to think about going back out until the wind dies down. Almost can't see the houses across the street at times.

Drove from Castle Rock to almost Deer Creek Canyon this morning - had big quarterly planning meetings at work, given the number of people involved working from home was going to be difficult. A mile or so off the freeway I stopped at a 90 degree curve for stuck vehicles, while stopped the wind pushed me sideways across the slightly downsloping road. Figured that was enough, did a 10-point turn and headed home. That was before 7:30, can't imagine how much worse it is now. It not a heavily traveled area, the people that managed to get in may not get out today.

Got an inch of snow last night, but it will all be gone today because it's supposed to warm up to the mid 40s today. Tonight? Three-to-five inches of snow are expected.

A nice January day here today. Wind chills tonight of -12 celsius (10 fahrenheit).

Three weeks ago, I had today pegged as the day to break out the clubs. Instead, the shovel will be standing by this weekend.
