My thought - it slows down enough to miss the trough in the central US which means it isn't picked up and brought inland north of North Carolina sufficient to cause on-shore problems. Trough acts as a kicker instead, keeping it just off-shore north of the Carolinas - beach issues but no landfall in mid-Atlantic or ny to Boston .

Yeah, I guess we aren't going down to the beach this weekend. Unless I have to run down midweek and put our patio furniture inside. I'm hoping to find someone there who can do it for me.

Fucking hurricanes.

And I just paid a guy to repaint my front door. This is going to push that out another week or two! Unbelievable.

Most recent run of the Euro would make you a bit happier - put it with a landfall in central Florida, then back off the coast but then a loop in the Atlantic and never gets into the Carolinas.

Well obviously it is either because of the need for a bathroom law or because of the opposition of the bathroom. I mean NC is trying to fight off hurricanes with legislation, but seems like they just need different laws.

Not just hurricanes and queers. We've legislated away beach erosion too!

Well those ACC lobbyists just want Duke, UNC, and State to finally compete with ECU's and UNCW's surfing teams.

Looks like Matthew is going to miss NC now, making a hard right at South Carolina. Good for me, but it looks pretty shitty for much of Florida. A Cat 4 scraping up along a lot of the coast. And then a few days later, it'll likely come back and hit Florida again. Crazy.

Oh, and then it'll go into the Gulf's warm waters and probably restrengthen.

BTW, I see that they're projecting a 9-foot storm surge. That would be pretty catastrophic on my island, especially when you add big waves on top of that surge. There are parts of my island that probably don't have much more than 9 foot clearance across the whole width.

I'm on the West Coast, so I should be good (for now). We've got friends coming up from Jupiter and West Palm, so I ran out to Walmart at 10:30 last night to stock up. What a shit show. Not in the hurricane prepping sense, but in the methhead insanity sense.

Apparently. I don't normally go to Walmart, so I can't attest for whether it was different at 10:30 than any other time of night. There was a guy there slinking around like the brother in Wedding Crashers, but with dark eye shadow, filling his shopping card with hundreds of Hot Pockets.

So Dave, you are buying islands with that big Micro$oft money? Nice.

Never really thought of this before, from the NWS:
Residents in high-rise buildings should be aware that the winds at the top of a 30-story building will be, on average, about one Saffir-Simpson category higher than the winds near the surface.

Some trees have shallow root systems. The house behind us has a 50 foot tall redwood tree. Redwoods also have shallow roots. I worry about it when we have big storms.
