My fault. Damn.
So, with the Blackhawks down and just over 2 minutes left, Andrew Shaw decides it's the right time for an unnecessary cheap shot. He gets caught and sent to the box for essentially the rest of the game, ruining Chicago's chances of coming back. He of course throws a tantrum and cameras catch him calling the ref a "faggot" and "fuck you". Nice.
Man I love the way he plays the game but he makes it so hard to like him. Crawford is in the same boat. Contrast someone like that with a guy like Hossa. Just bums me out that guys on my team act like that.
So should Shaw be suspended? Serious question. If he had called a black player a "n----" you know damn well he would. I get that it's the playoffs and all, but sooner or late pro sports leagues are going to have to try and put a stop to gay bashing, especially since they pay lip service to trying to encourage gay players to come out with titles like MLB's "Vice President of Inclusiveness" (or whatever it is).
He is saying that in the heat of the moment, he popped off and said something unfortunate. He's cooled down now and feels bad about his choice of words.
Or something like that. "Hey, we've all called someone the "f" word in the heat of the moment, right?"
Which, unfortunately... If we're all being really honest, that word being completely verboten is a relatively new thing. I'm not proud of my liberal use of the word "gay" back in the day and I definitely used the other slur (f word) as a high school kid in the 80s/90s. I cringe just thinking about it. And I'm of the ilk that won't use the N word, even in relaying what someone else said. Never used that word in a sentence... So, yeah, I take words and their impact pretty seriously.
So, I'm in no way excusing what he said. He should be suspended. But I believe he is playing on the sympathy of Meathead Sportsfan.

First round nearing the end. Favorite stories so far.
1. Matt Murray stepping up in Fleury's absence. But the Pens scoring a shit-ton of goals just in case.
2. Jonathan Drouin finally doing Jonathan Drouin things in the NHL.
3. The Sharks finally beating the Kings.
4. Jaromir Jagr in the playoffs in 2016. (And Pavel Datsyuk in the playoffs for the final time. Frowny emoticon.)
5. Flyers fans and Henrik Lundqvist acting as they are wont to do.
6. Thomas Greiss playing very well in goal for the Islanders. From what I've gathered, it's been a dirty little secret all year that he's been better than Halak.
ETA:
Forgot to mention:
7. No Canadian teams, so we only have to sit thru one pre-game anthem. Yeah, I love Canada, and that anthem is great, but I only have time for so much patriotism.
Good stuff Bapo. But I don't agree that Greiss was/is better than Halak. I had them both on my fantasy team, so I paid attention to them, and when he was healthy, Halak was a stud. Unfortunately he was hurt a lot.
I am still on a high over the Sharks whipping the Kings. They could get swept in the next round and the season would still be a relative success in my book. (But, actually I feel good about their chances to advance further.)

I'll take your word on Greiss/Halak. You've more tuned in than I am. But I've seen the Greiss praise elsewhere.
I really enjoy seeing back-up goalies have big moments in the playoffs. Neuvirth was great for the Flyers. And it was nice to see Jeff Zatkoff win Game 1 of the Pens/Rangers series. I mean, yeah, it sucked that two other goalies had to be concussed to get him into the game, but it was still a feel-good story.
And we have an overtime in the Isles/Rats game. Time for Greiss to step up again.
sancarlos wrote:Whoa. Isles tie it wth less than a minute left and goalie pulled. Third game to OT in this series.
And the Dallas/Minny game today was crazy.
Gotta love playoff hockey.
Double OT in New York. I have 2 Florida guys in my local pool so I want Florida to win but the Islanders are clearly the better team here. Go Purcell and Hudler!
And Friday night's games and today's games have been amazing. Didn't get to watch any of Saturday's game but they looked just as good.
As a Canadian, I don't really care that there aren't any Canadian teams left, as long as the games stay as exciting as they have been so far. I'm a hockey fan first and foremost. But i am cheering for Dallas and San Jose, need to cheer for someone to make it interesting.

Its the russian feed though
And why is there a car in the stands?
Ha, yeah that was my first question when they showed Jagr skating with a zamboni in an empty arena pregame. I guess they are giving it away?
Also, I bet watching hockey in Russian is not as weird as watching a CBC feed in Punjabi. at least a bunch of the names they are calling are Russian. maybe not in this game though.
Nonlinear FC wrote:So, the thing is... I think Neuvirth probably gives them a better shot than Mason at this point. He is a very good goalie and he'll be motivated against his former club.
And, really... Mason has given up a number of really soft goals. One that immediately gets put into NHL Network's "Worst Goals Allowed Ever" archive and another flukier goal off of a weird ricochet that he still should've handled better and then got completely clowned on by Kuznetsov after the bobble.
I agree, it's not like he's playing like shit. But this seems like a pretty reasonable shake-up.
I was starting to think I needed to come back in here and say something to reverse the hex. I've seen Neuvirth get in that zone for the Caps and he can be VERY difficult to breakdown. I think he has been kind of snake bitten by untimely injuries, otherwise he's right there with Varlamov as a full time starter somewhere.
You can lead a horse to fish, but you can't fish out a horse.
My local hockey bar that I hang out with has this great mix of people that all love hockey and we've all got our teams. We rib and shit but I think deep down we want everyone's team to do well until they play ours, it's always been that vibe.
The list of teams this close group of fans follows: Chicago, Minnesota, NY Rangers, Philly, and Detroit. Bummer of a last 2 weeks for us.
Fucking 2 posts and out. Tough loss. Give STL credit, they're a tougher team than they have been. I honestly think they get throttled by the Stars but that could just be my "fuck the Blues" mentality wearing off. Hawks have to address the defensive situation in the offseason.
I'm excited to see the Ducks lose to the Predators, for a few reasons:
* I don't like the Ducks. Fuck Kesler, fuck Getzlaf, fuck Garbutt, and especially, fuck Corey Perry.
* It was nice to see Nashville win their first ever series.
* I think the Sharks have a better chance to beat Nashville than Anaheim.
* It was a punishing 7-game series for those guys.
* The Sharks get to start at home and get the potential game 7 in San Jose.
* It works out better for me personally to attend games than it would've vs. Anaheim. Game 2 on Sunday, and maybe game 7 if there is one.
OK now, everybody all together, yell it with me...: "GO, SHARKS!"
And having just finished reading the second one, I think he puts too much stock in the Caps being "passive" on the forecheck on the kill... No one on the Flyers scared them on the PP, so they weren't busting their asses trying to keep them out of the zone. I expect this to be a point of emphasis against a very good PP unit this series.
You can lead a horse to fish, but you can't fish out a horse.
Wilson, for the most part, has kept his shit in check this season. Frankly, the sense from the Caps camp is that he was getting called for some stuff that other players would probably have gotten away with...
But, man... He's extremely lucky not to have been called for Clipping on that play. Deserves a suspension, no question about it.
Beyond that, WTF Orlov? That performance was shockingly bad.
On the flip side... Murray finally showed some signs of his age/experience. I doubt it'll be long term, but... I'm sure the leash is short. Young goalies can unravel quickly.
Memories of Varlamov getting yanked in the middle of Game 7 in 2009 still linger.
You can lead a horse to fish, but you can't fish out a horse.
I don't have a dog in the Caps/Pens series, but I really hate seeing knee-on-knee. Memories of fucking Dustin Brown. Wilson ought to get a suspension for that one.
