Hey, Mr. D. The Sharks are honoring Dan Boyle tonight. Too bad you couldn't make it!

NBC often uses local broadcasters for their games. But tonight, for the Sharks/Ducks game, the two broadcasters were Ducks' regular, Brian Hayward, and Sharks' regular, Randy Hahn. Kind of weird seeing that.

East/West Yada Yada Yada. This made a different when travel was harder, but today you hop on the charter and play some puck. Yeah I get regional rivalries, but does it really make that much difference who is in your conference? The NHL went geographical when they were coming out of a bad time in relevance. Do you think the NHL could go back to dead guy divisions and anyone would really care/make an impact with fans?
Re: 2016/2017 NHL Regular Season Thread
Traveling wears you out. I know that from personal experience and my job doesn't tax me physically. For a team on the east coast, travel is no big thing. Many of their division/conference opponents are right nearby. It isn't like that in the western conference. Geographic rivalries matter, and minimizing travel matters.wlu_lax6 wrote:East/West Yada Yada Yada. This made a different when travel was harder, but today you hop on the charter and play some puck.
Division names are irrelevant.

The difference between west and east isn't about number of away games. It's about distance between cities. Western conference teams spend much more time traveling than those in the east. It is a significant matter.wlu_lax6 wrote:but isn't east v. west only really 1 or 2 away games difference each year?sancarlos wrote:Traveling wears you out. Eta: San Jose traveled 42% more miles than Washington did, last season.

Re: 2016/2017 NHL Regular Season Thread
Some of that is inevitable because the west is bigger than the east. It's true regardless of sport essentially, but I hear you. The Red Wings were always at the top of the number of miles travelled list when they were in the Western Conference (which is the main reason they wanted switched to the East).
So I think where possible they should keep the geographic distribution, moving teams between divisions if necessary. Not sure how that's up for debate really. Especially considering the playoff structure in hockey is so division-dependent as compared to other sports. So one team in a division having to travel twice as many miles as the other teams could be considered somewhat unfair.

KHL travel must be awesome. Helsinki to Vladivostok

Re: 2016/2017 NHL Regular Season Thread
I had no idea some of these teams were in the KHL. Jokerit gets 10 days off between a home game on October 29th and a game in Khaborovsk (north of Vladivostok) on November 8th. Then to Vladivostok on the 10th, then to Beijing (the Florida of Russia) on the 12th, then only 2 days off until their next game back in Finland. Looks like the team in Zagreb gets a similar deal. Big break going out and then not much rest coming back.degenerasian wrote:KHL travel must be awesome. Helsinki to Vladivostok

I knew that Jokerit* was in the KHL, but I had no idea that there was a team in Beijing. I had to look it up, and it's true, it's damn true. Kunlun Red Star. I need to read more about this team. Actually, I need to read more about the KHL in general. Anybody want to start a KHL thread?
Division names: Bobrov, Tarasov, Kharlamov, and Chernyshev.

In a nice coincidence, former Sharks farmhand Daniil Tarasov plays for Moscow Dynamo. In the KHL's Tarasov division.

Tell me if I'm way off. Big and can clear a crease. Flames don't have any big D in their system that are even close to making the NHL. Flames are going to need a someone to take Engellands place next year. By no means is he ever going to be a top4 but if they think he can be a young , cheap #6-7 in the next year they should consider it.mister d wrote:He's quite the divisive figure in NYR circles. Maybe as a #7 who only plays against teams like the Ducks and Kings that also play unathletic goons.degenerasian wrote:Tell me if I'm way off. Big and can clear a crease. The league is moving toward skaters who can actually play, rather than lumbering tough guys.

Right, and he's not a "can't skate well because of his size" guy, he's a legitimately shitty skater (which knee issues haven't helped). Just gets smoked. Would have been a player 20 years ago.

Kind of surprised that McIlrath cleared. Now who does NY trade him too cause the team that acquires him in the next 72 hours(?) can just send him down.

Re: 2016/2017 NHL Regular Season Thread
Rumor is they've been trying to trade him since Clendening showed he was going to make the team and there aren't takers. Make him a 3rd rounder instead of 10th overall and would anyone see an NHLer here?
Re: 2016/2017 NHL Regular Season Thread
Really surprised Pastrnak got 2 games for his hit on Girardi. I like it, because it was clearly predatory and probably high, but they usually let those go without a second thought.

Re: 2016/2017 NHL Regular Season Thread
Expansion draft wrinkle:
Las Vegas team will have 48 hour window after teams submit protected list and before Vegas submits their list of players they are taking.
In those 48 hours Vegas will be able to talk to any unprotected UFA/RFA from the other 30 teams.
For example if Brett Burns is still unsigned by the Sharks then Las Vegas could sign him in June with that window
The important caveat is that if a team loses a free agent to Vegas in June, then that team can no longer lose a player in the expansion draft

Re: 2016/2017 NHL Regular Season Thread
I'm not too worried about Burns. He's indicated that he wants to stay in San Jose and the team wants him. They both understand the process. The team is up against the cap right now, but will let a couple guys go after the season who will be coming off their cap hit. (I mean Marleau, in particular.) That will free up the money and then they'll sign him.degenerasian wrote:Expansion draft wrinkle:

Made some dough fading the Red Wings after they went on that 6-game winning streak totally not supported by Corsi or any other advanced stats. Thinking I need to start paying way more attention to NHL for betting purposes in advance of the Silver/Desert Knights.

If you want to be cynical....he is a UFA after the season and that GAA (or other stat) isn't going to be pretty as a backup at the end of the year which may give teams pause about coming after him or at least drive down his price. Not saying the Canadiens wanted to lose but there may have been an agreement to let him get shelled if the opportunity arose.sancarlos wrote:What the fuck was Montreal doing, leaving Montoya in for 10 goals?
