ah right - true true although my explanation was incomplete as this even happens if/when i go to drop just one midfielder.

i have 5 defenders/5 midfielders/3 forwards. can i not drop a mid for a forward i guess is the pertinent question

I think you have to have a certain number of each but I'm not the best one to ask. That said, my team has been doing fairly well since the disastrous first few weeks. #teamnohaaland

You cannot drop a mid for a forward so that you have 5 D, 5 M, 4 F (including subs). All teams (including both starters and your four bench spots) need 2 goalies, 5 defenders, 5 midfielders and 3 forwards.

From that group of 15, you have to field a team for that week that has 1 goalie, at least 3 defenders, at least 2 midfielders, and at least 1 forward.

That's 7 must haves for your starting roster. Your other 4 starters for the week can be any mix you want. 5-4-1, 5-3-2, 5-2-3, 4-5-1, 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 3-5-2, 3-4-3 are all doable combos for your starters.

And, there are limits to the numbers of players on your roster from each position. And from each epl team.

Correct, no more than 3 players per EPL team.

Shockingly, Team Average is currently 4-4 in our h2h league.
