I was hoping he'd turn up on a Cricket pitch somewhere.

Can this pass as the Confessions thread for the time being? I watch a lot of Japanese (and Korean) baseball. Hey, in the early hours of dawn, there's no other sports on TV and we get (this being an extension of Hongkouver) a full "cultural" television package.

I believe Degen gets the same? He's an hour east.

The upside is that we get tons of international sport; lots of baseball and cricket and soccer. The downside? The downside is not really a downside. Japanese Baseball announcers are not exactly Vin Scully. They're more appropriately compared to a TV announcer, even on a ground ball to second, live on the spot, where Godzilla is rampaging.

That's when you really need Pat Summerall. "Godzilla...pregnant pause....building gone."

In early WW II the Germans used a massive glider to transport tanks.

The thing was so heavy it took three planes and two detachable rocket engines to get it airborne.

This seems as inefficient as hell to me, but I guess if you don't have road or rail access, it's your only option. Needless to say, these were not very hard to shoot down.

As a kid I went to a soccer camp in Lake Placid every summer and they had a soccer golf course set up around the entire campus. It was just six foot broom sticks in the ground with spray painted circles around the sticks for holes, but that course looks fucking awesome. I'd actually try watching that if it was televised. Soccer golf was a lot of fun to play on just a regular field, but on a golf course with giant holes, that looks like a blast.

Bizarre. I kept watching the beginning looking for an instigation, but saw none. I think the other players who attacked the kid did so assuming he had started a fight with their team.

Very impressive the way it turned out, but in hindsight, a reckless move. It was more likely to knock the puck into the net then keep it out.

Though I guess there's no way for the goalie to figure that out in the 0.01 seconds he had to react.

I was going to post that Bagram Air Field vid. Fucking scary as hell.

Apparently the cargo wasn't strapped down properly, shifted in the cargo bay, and forced a stall out of the engines. I haven't read up or Googled much about it, but that's referring to what little I've read.

I've had dreams like that since I was a little kid. They aren't scary dreams, either. Just kind of "oh, that plane is going to crash." Then it does. After 9/11 I watched every plane for months basically expecting i to fly into a building, similar to my recurring dreams (occasionally they would fly into buildings, but usually crash into the ground).

But I would totally watch this version. (Happy 80th birthday, by the way.)

Good lord. Either that or the pilot thought he was in an F-16 and could go straight up. Fuck.

How much would cargo have to weigh in order for a shift to force a huge plane, with an apparently full fuel load, to stall like that? Were they carrying tanks?

I love stuff like that.

But was Bohemia really such a large independent country so deep into the 1700s? I'm pretty sure they were incorporated into the Austrian Empire, and then Austria-Hungary by then.

Doubtful that the pilot would do something like that.

Here's an article with a few minor details. Overall, they are going to have to have a serious investigation for the specifics. A crash that violent and chaotic looks almost unreal when you see how the plane just drops.

Awesome. I love Willie. That is the only way I would have any interest in watching a movie version of The Hobbit. The book bored the fuck out of me. I quit the LOTR books half way through, and fell asleep during the first LOTR movie in the theater and never bothered watching the rest. I'll assume the talking trees ate them all and they never made it to Mordor.
