Re: Getting the spins
Three days each way on the road to and from ABQ, having to share the car music with my wife and daughter. Wife likes the Offspring a lot, daughter likes Blink 182. I have to say, I changed my mind a bit in favor of each of them on the trip. At least compared to a lot of the dreck forced upon me. (Of course, they hated a lot of the stuff I played, too.) Gawd, Sedona is beautiful.

Three days from SF to ABQ? That is a leisurely pace.
Then again, I tend to drive fast in that part of the world; I've been from Tuscon to Tucumcarie; Tehachapi to Tonopah.

We drove (well I sat in the passenger seat) from San Diego to ABQ in a bit over 8 hours, then again my buddy wanted to put his new M3 through it's paces.howard wrote:Three days from SF to ABQ? That is a leisurely pace.

Funny. We were singing that song on the road. Well, I was, anyway. ("Willin'", by Little Feat, for you kids out there.)howard wrote:Three days from SF to ABQ? That is a leisurely pace.

We had the three of us, plus the dog. We wanted to enjoy it and didn't want to rush it, so we took three driving days to do the ~1100 miles. 30 years ago, I did the same drive in two days. We went SC->Barstow->Flagstaff->ABQ on the way out and substituted Sedona for Flagstaff on the way back (plus added a second day in Sedona.) Sedona is so beautiful.

Unless I missed something, Snoop had a number one before Dr Dre (solo).

Re: Getting the spins
Almost hesitate to ask, but...
While I continue to pretty much despite the Grateful Dead and jam bands in general, I finally stumbled across just how good Ain't Life Grand is (to my ear anyway) from Widespread Panic. So, I guess I am asking, are there other Panic songs that are in the same vein as Ain't Life Grand (which is a good tune that doesn't indulge in too much jam bandiness and I really like the walking piano in that song). It has been great to run to, and am curious if there are other similar songs I should look up from Widespread.

Re: Getting the spins
You're gonna find that walking piano in a lot of Widespread tunes.
"Walking" is the song that got me into them back in the 90s.
another fine example is the instrumental "Disco"

Spotify is all sorts of broken this morning. I can't tell you how happy I was for Twitter to confirm it wasn't just me.

Re: Getting the spins
Its borderline fact that indie/alt artists produce nothing but garbage new material after age 50 but Bob Mould's new song "Voices in My Head" is pretty f'ing great.

Thanks rush! And agree on that Bob Mould song, D.
Re: Getting the spins
I heard literally my third ever J. Geils Band song this morning on the way into work and really dug it.

Re: Getting the spins
So, Centerfold must be #1; second probably Houseparty, or maybe Must've Got Lost. So, I'll guess either Lookin For a Love, or my favorite, First I Look At The Purse. Because, if the purse is fat, well that's where it's at!

Freeze Frame? Or was that just my parents for some reason?

Re: Getting the spins
I will always stand by my statement that the J. Geils Band is very under-rated. Most people only know the Freeze-Frame album and "Centerfold", but their earlier stuff is great...very bluesy house-party type rock n' roll. The live album "Full House" is a lot of fun. And they were a very fun live band. Saw them in '78 at a Day On The Green concert (along with Journey, UFO, Thin Lizzy, and Nazareth), and then on their '82 Freeze Frame tour, and they were great both times. Peter Wolf was a fantastic front man (and was married to Faye Dunaway for a while. Good trivia question there!).Giff wrote:I heard literally my third ever J. Oh, and the opener for them in '82? Little band out of Ireland...I think they were called U2. Wonder what ever happened to them.
Re: Getting the spins
1. Centerfold
2. Love Stinks
3. Freeze Frame
Not sure I can think of a fourth song.

Totally Kafkaesque
Re: Getting the spins
Centerfold and Freeze Frame (still think that should be Ken Giles walkout song) are the two I'd heard. Give It To Me was the one I heard today.

Re: Getting the spins
I really like this song. It's actually the theme to Season 2 of The Leftovers but that one's a little too rednecky for me.

Yeah, see what I mean? I'm waiting for banjo boy from Deliverance to cut in.

I can't decide if the name "Ringo DeathStarr" is fantastic or terrible...
Re: Getting the spins
Another vote for terrible.

Re: Getting the spins
Your permanent band name shouldn't be something that's cute/clever the first time and then tedious or worse down the road. A la Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.

Com Truise.
Don't even know what their music is, and not gonna find out. (Even if they are touring with STRFKR)
