Over here they are called "Honeycrunch." They taste the same. I have no idea why the name is different.

Re: Apples 2014
My bad. Honeycrisp = Honeycrunch in Germany. No SweeTangos at all.

wikipedia wrote:The US patent for the Honeycrisp cultivar expired in 2008, though patent protection in some countries continues until as late as 2031.[4] Patent royalties had generated more than $10 million by 2011, split three ways by the University of Minnesota between its inventors, the college and department in which the research was conducted, and a fund for other research.[2][4] The University of Minnesota crossed Honeycrisp with another of their apple varieties, ‘Minnewasheta’ (brand name ‘Zestar!’), to create a hybrid called ‘Minneiska’ (brand name ‘SweeTango’),[6] released as a “managed variety” to control how and where it can be grown and sold.[2]

I'll have to give the Sweetango another shot. When I tried them, they were sweeter and much less tart than the HC. I'll have to hit Wegmans' next week to find some Sweetangos.Diamond wrote:The wrongness, it's almost like you haven't even tried them. The Sybian wrote:

If you want to be a pretentious douche, then eat a SweeTango.**
It's obvious the Honeycrisp apple is the apple of the working man.
** Does not apply to Diamond personally.

That article say sit all...SweeTango is the child of honeycrisp. Would you rather have Archie or Petyon?

Does your farm sell to the Heinen's grocery store chain in Cleveland? If so, I'll start buying STs so I can support your lifestyle.Diamond wrote:Good find, Sabes. Re: Apples 2014
We don't sell directly to them, but if they've got STs on the shelves that's good for us. They might come from Michigan or Minnesota but they're probably from NY, in which case there's a decent chance they came from us.Sabo wrote:Does your farm sell to the Heinen's grocery store chain in Cleveland? Re: Apples 2014
Awesome. I'll buy some STs later today and choke them down since they're clearly inferior to the juicy, crisp and glorious Honeycrisp. And I'm doing it all for you, Diamond!

I thought Diamond grew Honeycrisps too, no? I did by some STs last week. I'll defer judgment since they weren't the best quality. I will say it had more flavor than even the mighty HC, but it was sweeter and less tart. If that exposes my poor apple pallet, so be it.

Re: Apples 2014
Unfortunately for Diamond, my local grocer didn't have any STs. I assumed they were pulled from the shelves because they had apple AIDS. I bought Honeycrisps instead and they were delicious as always.
And Syb, a big reason I prefer the HC to the ST is the tartness. A HC is already sweet enough, so I don't need to lose tartness for more sweetness. It's solely a personal preference.

I don't want to get snobby, but I can't deny I'm a snob.
Honeycrisps are great, SweeTangos are great. I've eaten both right off the tree, out of storage, at their peak, past their peak, whatever. I think a Honeycrisp is sweeter and a SweeTango has that tart undertone that a HC lacks. I can't knock anyone for their different take, it's just not my take at all.
Anyone try a Snapdragon? It's right in the same ballpark with HC and ST. Cross btw HC and NY752.

We subscribe to an organic farmer service where once every two weeks, they deliver a box of a variety of fruits and vegetables. You can specify things, but we like to just go with what they bring us - usually it's great. And, we just received a new box, coincidentally including... Honeycrisps!

Not sure how I'm one state over from Arizona, but the honeycrisp apples here are both smaller and less delicious. It's possible that the softball sized wonder fruits I had 5 years ago have changes a bit, but I doubt it.
Sidenote: they were called 'honeycrunch' apples in Germany.

Re: Apples 2014
New York grown vs Washington State? Here, the NY ones come out earlier. They are bigger, and way better. When they phase out, the little, less flavorful Washington Honeycrisps come out to sully the good name. The little guys are still out on the shelves, and I don't recall Honeycrisps being sold beyond October or November in past years.Johnnie wrote:Not sure how I'm one state over from Arizona, but the honeycrisp apples here are both smaller and less delicious. Re: Apples 2014
I don't think I've ever had a proper honeycrisp. Must be regional.

Maybe, but they've been this way all season going back to fall when they first showed up in the produce section. The Sybian wrote:New York grown vs Washington State? Re: Apples 2014
Yeah, when I was living out in Seattle, they only had the smaller, Washington-grown Honeycrisps. They weren't as good.
TBH, the softball-sized ones this year haven't been quite as good either, I don't think. They're very juicy, but not as much flavor. Maybe I've just gotten spoiled.
