Apparently, the entire Great Lakes Basin is under attack.

Looks like Harry Styles is too cool to wear his NFL shirts.

(And to answer any questions - I know the names as I have a teenaged daughter)

Slow morning, slow enough that I just googled "harry styles football jersey". It looks like the kid might be a for real Packers fan. If he's refusing to wear another team's jersey because of that, I think I can respect that decision.

You might be on to something. Look at how he holds the Bears' jersey.

Harry Styles, Cheesehead.

I should cross post this in the confessions thread, but I no longer hate One Direction. My daughter really likes their music, and thinks they are cute, so my wife taped their interview/performance on the Today Show. The guys actually seemed kind of cool and completely unaffected. I just pegged them as another douchey, talentless boy band. Then we watched some show about them, and I actually kind of like them as people. Not a fan of the music, but it isn't horrible. Worth it to see my daughter excited and singing along. I'm sure that stops being cute at a certain age, and become annoying. I even felt bad for laughing at the guy who injured his knee playing in a celebrity charity match when Aston Villa (EPL team) star Gabby Agbonlahor took him out with a horrible slide tackle. Nah, it is still funny.

Plus apparently Russell Wilson is in the band, 2nd from right. He's such a hard worker.

Another set of photos. He isn't even holding the Bears jersey in this version, and he does wear a Brewers jersey for the Milwaukee photo.

Let's never speak of this again.

Among the things that make me pleased about my 14 year-old daughter - when she started playing the bass guitar, she quickly gravitated away from boy bands and pop in general to fairly heavy rock. Heavier than I'd like, to be honest, but it beats One fucking Direction.

This happened to me with T-Swift. Her music sucks although some of her songs are insanely catchy but I've seen her in interviews and shit like that, and she doesn't appear to take herself very seriously at all. She seems to know exactly what she is and has fun being it.

I wish I had saved it, but about a month ago, somebody I follow on Twitter posted a humorous series of quotes by her that made her appear to be about as intelligent as a bag of rocks. But, then again she doesn't have to be NDT to sing, and NDT probably can't do her job, either.

That is a great piece of political-history art. More here:

The potential artists would no doubt be executed before they could execute their piece. But it would be even cooler to see the outline of the Tibet-China boundary highlighted this way.

Fantastic stuff.

Just thinking back to when the wall came down - it seemed surreal. That and when Ceausescu (sp?) was executed were surreal moments. We never thought it could happen.

Image

Here's Ceausescu's final speech. Disturbance starts at 35 seconds and a few seconds later there is a look on his face that is amazing. A quarter century of being a dictator and four days later he was executed.

I find that with my daughter's music (she's 15), I can go from hearing a song and think "catchy" to "not bad" to "turn that shit off" within a half dozen listens.

Current example - that "Bang Bang" song.

Some more footage from Ceausescu's last speech, that shows why he looked freaked out.
" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The wall went up when I was 4yo, and blissfully unaware of the outside world. The wall and all it symbolized was a permanent fixture throughout my life. Until it wasn't. This event was just as shocking in its own way as all the horrors people of my age viewed on the tv as we grew up. Because the wall, the Cold War, the Soviet domination of life in these nations was obvs permanent.

Now the reminder that these revolutionary events are 25 years distant is just another surreal mindfuck. Damn, that time sure passed quickly.

A side note. A few of us were discussing Ceausescu's untergang when it happened, and we were confused as to the correct pronunciation of his name. (Tom Brokaw sounded like he was having a stroke, trying to say the name on the evening news.) So we gave up, and continued our conversation, substituting a different name for ease and simplicity. We referred to him as 'Canseco'. I bet those 25 years flew by for Jose as well.

Most genuine protest movements and revolutionary events fail (I'm not counting those engineered by and primarily driven by outside governments and forces.) Nearly all of them fail; but we remember the few that succeed, and are biased against recognizing the true numbers. Another characteristic of these things is you almost never know until the last minute when it is going to work. The success, the breakthrough, when it comes it typically comes quickly and unexpectedly, even in the context of a long struggle.

(didn't want to bother starting a Berlin Wall thread.)

Couldn't imagine people living in East Berlin. Freedom for a lot of people is across a border, a river even an ocean. This is freedom across the street.

And the way the wall went up, wasn't it just a bunch of East Berliners who formed a line similar to those lights that are there now?

Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield posted this photo to social media in April 2013. The lights within the city still define east and west Berlin.

(Aside: It's so weird that Berlin was separated like that considering how welcoming and outstanding Berlin is today. The Brandenburg gate on New Year's was crazy. Seeing that photo with the wall in front of it is disconcerting.)
