2013 MAC Football Thread

Now looking like a sure thing Eric Fisher will be the highest drafted MAC player in history. He even had a private workout with the KC Chiefs (first pick overall) in Mount Pleasant yesterday. Would be pretty mind-blowing to have a Chippewa drafted first overall in the NFL Draft.

Saw that on the schedule a couple of weeks ago and thought of you actually. Unfortunately, should be a good game. CMU tends to sleepwalk against FCS teams. We play Michigan the week before that one, so I don't know whether that's good or bad.

It's a letdown game for the Cats, too. Not only are they stepping back to the MAC after a brief dalliance with Minnesota last year, but they've got a huge tilt with Colgate the week after. Pretty dicey spot.

Oct. 12. Central Michigan Chippewas vs. Ohio Bobcats in Athens (Homecoming weekend).

Mulligan and I will be there. We hope you'll join us, brian.

It's a lot more likelier that it was a couple of weeks ago since my girlfriend's Mom is coming into town that weekend for a visit. I'm going to try.

Awesome. I hope you can make it. Uptown Athens is a blast.

Apparently, the Little Caesars Bowl is going to be replaced in 2014 with a bowl game run by the Lions pitting the B1G and ACC. So basically, after the best year in conference history the MAC is losing the one bowl affiliation that made the most sense. Awesome.

Brian, FYI ... turns out I can't make this game after all. Mrs. Sabo and I are going to Myrtle Beach for a mini family reunion that weekend.

But hey, if you want to come to Athens on Sept. 21 to watch OU destroy Austin Peay, you're more than welcome. Mulligan and I will be at that game.

Thanks for the invite but since I'm going to New Orleans at the end of Sept. most other travel around that time is probably out. I'm going to try for sure next year though. I need to do more traveling for football games.

By the way, Buffalo revealed its new uniforms and it turns out Buffalo is in New York.

They should just keep it SUNY then list every city with a check mark next to the one that applies. That way they can get the volume discount.

And I almost missed this thread entirely. Nice work, boys. Speaking of my alma-mater, I never know how I should write it out. so many choices:

1.) State University of New York at Buffalo
2.) SUNY at Buffalo
3.) SUNY Buffalo
4.) University at Buffalo

And no matter which way you choose, you damn well hope they don't confuse it with Buff State, right?

The Miami Redhawks have a new uniform and helmet this year. Very interesting. Not sure if this is a permanent switch or for occasional game use.

Jeremy Guy, the MAC's director of communication, is awesome. Sports Pickle posted this story this morning:

MAC Conference Football Media Day Ends After 35 Minutes of Awkward Silence

They are going to be everyday uniforms. There is also supposed to be a version of the helmet in white. As you might expect, thoughts on these throughout the Miami community are mixed.

Everyday uniforms? Oy, they're hideous. Miami's uniforms were always so sharp I thought. Given the school's history and standing in the conference, I'm surprised at this.

Yeah...I was a little surprised as well. The uniforms have varied over the years but never strayed too far from what preceded. When you have next to nothing for a fanbase, and what you do have is as apathetic as they are, you have to try something new. I'll give the athletic department points for trying.

CMU is doing the whole Oregon thing where they have a different combination for every home game and I'm not too keen on that, but at least it's solid colors (with the exception of the Pizza Bowl unis, which weren't great, but could have been much worse given Adidas' penchant for making alternate unis that look like a toddler threw up on them).

Ohio University football players Larenzo Fisher (CB) and Greg Windham (QB) arrested this afternoon, allegedly for felony drug trafficking. Welcome to the big time, Sabo.

The most amazing thing is they allegedly were selling ecstasy instead of weed. I didn't know there were drugs in Athens other than weed.

Weed was included as part of the student activity fee we paid every quarter.

I went to down to Piscataway to see Eastern Michigan take on Rutgers this afternoon (tickets via my wife's boss). EMU had a couple of nice drives and knocked out (quite possibly in a literal sense) Rutgers starting QB, but a couple of missed FGs (especially a chip shot at the end of the first half that would have made it 14-13 Rutgers) and what was a pretty obvious physical disadvantage (EMU's o-line got pushed around all day and RU had a couple of long TD runs where once the guy made the corner you could tell know one on EMU was fast enough to catch him) made it not too much of a game.

We ended up getting there only about 45 minutes before game time and were in a shitty parking "lot" (pulled off to the side of the road leading to the actual lot) and the stadium was not full, so it wasn't the most exciting atmosphere outside, but it does take over from a Delaware St. vs Univ. of Delaware game as the biggest college game I have ever attended. Plus they retired Eric LeGrand's number at half time (the first player in RU history ever honored in that manner), which was pretty moving.

Someone is excited for the B1G:

The "First Game" statue, which the players touch for luck before each game:

The view from our seats:

The student section, and one of many #52 tributesfor LeGrand:

Speaking of this, I saw a guy with a 1869 National Champs t-shirt. I laughed:

Extra point, Rutgers!:

They gave LeGrand a sword. The video tributes were nice, too. Ray Rice, Mohamed Sanu and former AD Tim Pernetti probably got the biggest cheers. Bill Belichek and current AD Julie Hermann got the biggest boos:

EMU's equipment truck (note the cowboy in the Woodson jersey):

Now there's a nice throwback jersey:

Not that I'm invited next week, but Arkansas is coming to town and everyone pretty much agreed that it will probably be a cooler scene than today.

I will be in the house for that game.

My father's seats are just off the broadcast booth.(the red hut with 52 on it).

Felony drug trafficking in ecstasy is a really built up way to say that they were selling molly pills for $10 each.

I had an awesome (not awesome) meltdown on Facebook after CMU's pants-shitting on Saturday night. I didn't have a lot of straws left, but blowing a 21-0 lead to a team as shitty as UNLV was the last straw for me. I hope Dan Enos dies in a fire.

Howeva...on the bright side, U.S. News and World Report recently upgraded CMU to a Tier 1 National University, so that's something. We're #190! Coming for you, U. of Streets!
