Friday Music Discussion: Good Music, Bad Song

Had a thought: what are some songs whose instrumental music has a good deal of merit, but are tarnished by bad lyrics and/or poor vocal performances?

Here's the first one that came to mind for me. If this were purely an instrumental, it might be one of my favorite rock tracks of all time, but then it's interrupted by vocals that sound like a drunk guy stumbling onto the stage at a karaoke bar and making up lyrics for a song that didn't have any:

I'm not the rock connoisseur some of you guys are, so I look forward to discovering, and being revolted by, the examples you can dig up.

I kinda love the lyrics to that song, but in a weird, way. But you are right, the instrumentals are great.

I could put a bunch of the Doors stuff in here. I kinda hated Morrison's lyrics.

The first that comes to mind is Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding. The best Elton John song is rudely interrupted by the worst Bernie Taupin lyric.

To channel Scottie, lots of Beatles songs fit this.

I would pick Walk of Life before any other Dire Straits song. I like this thread, I'm going to add so much rap to it.

This is devolving into a bad lyrics thread. Some of those songs don't have good music to go along with bad lyrics.

If you're referring to MacArthur Park, it's got a great beat and I can dance to it.

The lyrics to Superstition aren't horrific, but they don't exactly match up with the greatest of the music.

Sultans is one of my favourite songs. Great with lyrics, without lyrics..in a boat, with a goat.

I feel that a crap load of rap would be better with out crap over it. Just the funky beatz yo.

BTW that MIA song needs to be burned by fire.

Because rap.

Personally, the instruments here are not Rush's best but this song is a favorite of mine for the easy drum progression that I learnt on.

Neil Peart, THE instrumentalist, reduces himself to Rob Pilatus level at 3:10 of the video. I want to kill myself by about 3:20 but then Rob Pilatus starts hitting the snare again and then I'm home.

In the spirit of trying to keep this hue to the idea of the thread and at the risk of being mocked I'll say that I kinda like some Creed and Nickleback songs except for the singer and the lyrics.

This one is tough - I like the song, but I'm not sure if the lyrical part is good or not. Maybe it is. But the music itself is uniquely good, IMO.
