Retro Shoes

I found out recently that Nike re-released its late-'80s Air Trainers earlier this year. You remember them -- the Bo Jacksons.

I was about to buy a new pair of shoes anyway, so I found some discounted overstock on eBay and decided to pull the trigger. But as I was waiting for another, non-shoe-related eBay auction to close, I skimmed Deadspin and saw this link: How to buy retro shoes. Timely! But my g-d, this guy sounded like the biggest bag in the world, and I almost canceled my purchase. Like, if I wear these shoes, will people think that I'm trying to sneak onto Gronk's Party Bus? I shudder at the thought.

Hey, I watched a few episodes of 'Entourage,' so I was vaguely aware that retro shoes were a thing, but I didn't realize that they're actually a Big Effing Deal, at least to some people. Anybody else here into this kind of thing? I thought that it was a weird twitch that I had, but apparently there's a market for it.

Loved the Bo Jacksons. They were sort of tan, navy and white, right?

I also loved the Air Huaraches. I think Nike may have re-released them recently.

All of that being said, my favorite pair of shoes ever were British Knights.

This pair.

Raise your hand if you went to a school where British Knights were banned because they were "gang" shoes.

I wore that BK pair all through 7th grade.

I own 6 pairs of shoes.

1 pair black dress, 1 pair brown dress, 1 pair cross train/gym shoes, 1 pair previous gym shoes now used for yard work, 1 pair low goretex northface boot, 1 pair above ankle goretex columbia boot.

I guess #7 is a 50$ pair of basketball shoes I have.

Like every white kid living in rural Pennsylvania at the time, my cultural heroes were Spike Lee and Public Enemy. And I was very susceptible to marketing, apparently. So, after I saw 'Do the Right Thing,' I had to have these shoes.

And now I have them again.

Champs has them, but you have to order through the store. I'm on it. Is it a faux pas for internet buds to wear the same pair thousands of miles apart?

We'll have to text each other to make sure we don't wear them at the same time, I think. 'Yo, Ched, hot action at Diesel tonight. I'm wearing the shoes, and I don't plan on coming home alone. LOL.'

I feel like you have a gap in terms of "nice casual". Dress shoes would look weird, gore-tex boots would look odd.

These are the low boots I typically wear in the fall/winter.

I'll admit, I've never paid much attention to my shoes when it comes to casual fashion. I wear jeans 80% of the time and typically those or my nicer pair of Crosstrainers.

I forgot, I also have a grey pair of low top Chuck Taylors, but I rarely wear them because they've got 0 support and make my back hurt after a while.

I was loyal to Puma white high tops for a decade. Until they made these:

Yeah, maybe a pair of these!

I'm partial to Air Maxes, ACGs and a few other Nikes.

I have a couple dozen pairs of sneakers. Some I have had for a while and still in good wearable condition.

Been using the Nike SNKR app and bought more sneakers in the past 6-9 months than the last few years. A few I just keep in their boxes and haven't worn them yet.

These were a must buy though not sure when I will wear them...

I have 5 pairs of shoes.

In my gym bag alone. A couple pairs of Reebok Nanos, a couple pairs of lifters, and some Chucks.

Then in my closet is a varying array of 19 pairs of shoes from Doc Martens, to dress shoes, to flip flops, to issued boots, to the high heels and gold wrestling shoes I wore for Rocky Horror Picture Show.

In my living room next to my end table, another 10 pairs of shoes. Mostly Chucks and my every day Inov-8s, but also the shoes I wear with my Oktoberfest costume that I have yet to put away.

Then I'm sure in my storage room I have more pairs of issued boots too.

I've never actually counted all of this until right now. Thanks, Bapo.

But to the topic...I'm sure I have some Jordans somewhere.

I'd suggest those shoes would only work for those who have hair the size of Africa.

I'm up to 9 if you count 1 pair of flip flops and my soccer/rugby cleats.

Much like my gains at the gym, I'm about 18% of the way to Bronto and Johnnie.

I've recently discovered that cleaning your old sneakers with Mr Clean's magic eraser (especially the midsole) makes them look like new.

TTB, those Bo Jacksons are unreal. I didn't know that such things existed.
You sort of ruin them when you wear them though.
One year in high school, on the first day of tennis practice, I thought that it would be a good idea to write my locker combination on the bottom of my shoes. After practice, I discovered that the ink had been rubbed away.

Unrelated story: I did not get accepted into Yale.
