Boudreau may be a Senator and Jagr going to foil up for another season in Florida.

I'd guess Boudreau to the Flames. Senators ' owner is a cheapskate.wlu_lax6 wrote:Boudreau may be a Senator and Jagr going to foil up for another season in Florida.

Its apparently not happening, but I would have been fine if the Rangers fired AV and everyone on the outside said "but look at his record/points/playoffs/whatever in his three years".

Senators hire former Tampa Bay coach Guy Boucher.

Re: 2016 NHL Offseason Thread
I'm excited that the Sharks don't have any key players that are UFA this offseason, and that the Ducks might be hiring anti-analytics pro-goon caveman Randy Carlyle as their new coach. And that the Kings appear to be stuck with the horrible contract that is Dustin Brown, while apparently not having the cap room to resign UFA Milan Lucic. Bodes well for the Pacific division race next season.
Hey, Mr. D, I saw a piece yesterday floating the idea of the Rangers trading Nash to the Sharks for Marleau and a late-round pick. Intriguing. The Sharks do need a top six left wing, but Benoit Pouliot from the Oilers seems a better fit, contractually.

I could be off, but I'm thinking if we deal Nash it'll be similar to the Gaborik deal where we get a few younger pieces that add up to less than Nash's contract rather than swapping for another contract. We (badly) need some payroll flexibility and he seems like the only place we can get it without a shitload of luck (Girardi, Staal) or compromising the core (those horrific Stepan rumors).
Pouliot ... good luck. He's frustrating as F to watch play because of the incessant brain farts and offensive zone penalties but he's also a bucket of talent. Him and Stralman are the two guys I could see the advanced stats on and never reconcile them to what I was watching most nights.

Jeeeeeeesus. Today does nothing to convince me Chicago didn't step in shit just as much or more than they "built" their semi-dynasty.

Re: 2016 NHL Offseason Thread
I love this. Offloaded the worst contract they've issued in recent memory. Teuvo regressed this year and this frees up money for next year because, hot take incoming, Artemi Panarin is likely going to want more than 825,000$ per year to play hockey in the future.govmentchedda wrote:Expand on this, please. Re: 2016 NHL Offseason Thread
I think as amazing of a job as they've done drafting, Bowman has done an equally shitty job handling the cap and trading. Look at who they've sent out in the past like 6 seasons; Ladd, Byfuglien, Campbell, Frolik, Leddy, Sharp, Saad and now Teravainen. I get the whole "can't keep everyone" logic, its obviously true, but he's repeatedly picked the wrong guy to trade or been forced to trade a legit (usually young) asset because of some horrible previous decision. They've gotten results, that's inarguable, but you can't not get results as GM with the talent the scouting department keeps bringing in and Quenneville as your coach.

More to the overall point, you shouldn't have to give away players like that but its happened repeatedly because he keeps making all the wrong decisions on who to pay.
(And you just know this is to pay Shaw too much. You know it.)

Re: 2016 NHL Offseason Thread
Versus freeing up space for Panarin, signing another defenseman or two (which was their main weakness over the course of the season), maybe being able to resign Shaw/Panik, and generally being more versatile? Yes.mister d wrote:I mean, that's fine, but do you want to bet against him the next 5 years?
Could be also that Carolina wanted him as a condition for taking Bickell, which I would totally understand and do in a heartbeat.
He has great potential. I'm just saying if someone other than Bicks had to go, I'm not crying over here. I'm by no means great at breaking all this down, but the Hawks have a unique situation having 88, 18, 2, and 7 on the same roster, and it comes back to what you said "you can't keep everyone". Tevuo is probably looking at 4/yr+ when he resigns.

I hope they don't, but Shaw is young and plays an important role on this team. My hope is he matures along the way and cuts down on the dumb shit, but he provides a dimension other guys don't.mister d wrote:More to the overall point, you shouldn't have to give away players like that but its happened repeatedly because he keeps making all the wrong decisions on who to pay.

I think of Shaw as a less-talented Brad Marchand (or, a more-talented Steve Ott). I wonder what size/length of contract he'll get.BSF21 wrote:I hope they don't, but Shaw is young and plays an important role on this team. Re: 2016 NHL Offseason Thread
You can justify most any deal by saying "well, it frees up money for (hypothetical gains)"; my point is there shouldn't be any choosing between Teravainen and Panarin, especially at this stage. Not to do the whole appeal to authority thing, but if anyone can recognize when a front office eschews team friendly deals during RFA years in order to misidentify their core at market rates then pays then pays the price later, I'm pretty sure its Rangers fans. I'm terrified of what's going to happen with our RFAs (and Stepan) in the next month. Chicago made all the same mistakes (Kruger, Bickell, Seabrook, probably Crawford (relative to who they let go), etc), they've just had the high core to cover for it.BSF21 wrote:Versus freeing up space for Panarin, signing another defenseman or two (which was their main weakness over the course of the season), maybe being able to resign Shaw/Panik, and generally being more versatile? (Also, defense was a weakness and now a need in large part because they handed off Nick Leddy for a similar reason as today's deal. I'm sure those savings had some justifiable use at the time too.)
Re: 2016 NHL Offseason Thread
Funny, iirc, Quenneville didn't trust Leddy and he played low playoff minutes in Chicago, but as soon as he went to the Islanders, he was part of their top four.

Another thought I just saw in a thread and didn't think about was that TT was going to be the odd man out on a protected list for the expansion draft, so this move made more sense from a value standpoint. Just another view to consider.

Yeah, that's definitely not the case. Toews, Kane, Shaw (assumed), Kruger, Anisimov and Hossa. He was their 7th (or 6th, if Shaw walks).

I'm pretty much on the same page. I don't know that I agree with Mr. D that the Hawks have been keeping the wrong guys. They certainly seem to know what they are doing, and I don't think that all comes down to six core players and Coach Q.BSF21 wrote:Versus freeing up space for Panarin, signing another defenseman or two (which was their main weakness over the course of the season), maybe being able to resign Shaw/Panik, and generally being more versatile? And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.
Re: 2016 NHL Offseason Thread
I'm just saying that if you assume the draft picks are scouting and not Bowman himself, a lot of GMs would have done a much better job at the extend vs. trade decisions.
Re: 2016 NHL Offseason Thread
Maybe they better let Fleury be the first on the team to have his day with the Cup, so he can do it while he is still a Penguin.

Good, Calgary is where the Red Wings are supposed to be trying to send Howard this summer.

Merging the two here ... what are the odds Burke or a Burke-like GM wouldn't pay way too much for 31 year old Corey Crawford?

And, I am loving seeing the Kings in some disarray, now. Stripping your captain of his "C" is always a bit of a mess and humiliation, and it couldn't happen to a more deserving POS than Dustin Brown. And, his bloated contract makes him pretty much untradeable. Reminds me a bit of the messy offseason the Sharks had two years ago, coincidentally, after they lost a disappointing playoff series to the Kings. Can't wait for the other shoe to drop when Lucic signs with Vancouver.

Some good commentary here, on what is going on in Carolina and Chicago. Carolina could be a really good team in a couple years.
