I really like Pavement, but Stephen Malkmus' solo stuff tends to be better. Something about his maturation: it was high time to match his music to his deadpan, literary lyrics?

Loved the hits from this back in the day. Love the Eagles of Death Metal cover of "Save a Prayer" as well.

Since I have a couple of minutes, I'll take HDO's honorary pick off the board. I celebrate his entire catalog, but this one is the best:

Bought Rio on vinyl and was surprised how different the mix is in Hungry Like a Wolf and Rio. Apparently they made them more upbeat and poppy for releasing as singles in the US (which are the radio/MTV versions we're all familiar with).

To be honest, there's a good chance I don't take a Malkmus-related project at this pick if you hadn't posted about Pavement in that other thread. But they've been on my list the past couple weeks, so I'm not sure that qualifies as trolling so much as it does match a "use it or lose it" situation.

Ah, Depeche Mode was a back pocket pick for a couple rounds now and I just had other things in front. That'll make a fun cabin.

I think what probably sticks in the craw for Duran Duran is that they got accepted into mainstream popular culture in spite of how well they played their instruments. Simply put, they were tight. Strip that stuff down and they're still good, despite their music's over production.

Can we get a ruling on whether or not this eliminates, say, The Power Station or Arcadia? (o;

1) My dick is average length.

2) Maybe we're from different musical generations. That came out as I was finishing high school. It's what girls played at their parties - guys just endured it. Maybe there's a retro re-evaluation of Duran Duran or something. To me, they make ABBA seem like the Beatles.

I'm with you, Pruitt. The Duran Duran and Depeche Mode picks were things not even in my top 1000 rounds.

Depeche Mode reminds me of the asshole that lived down the hall my freshman year. DD reminds me of my sister's musical taste in HS (well with some Wham! thrown in.)

One of the greats.

And, I'm a big fan of Nick Lowe! (Seconds of Pleasure or Jesus of Cool (Pure Pop in the US) would have been my album.)

Thumbs up on Depeche Mode. Thumbs down on Duran Duran. They were huge when I was in 7th and 8th grade, and even then all the girls loved them and the boys tolerated them (at best).

He's a different kind of cat, that's for sure. My oldest BIL is a superfan and has been backstage a dozen times and Ben definitely knows who he and his wife are, remembering names of kids and shit.

And, sorry not sorry, duff.

I do have my next pick lined up and it has hugely sentimental value and I'll be bummed if it's yoinked.

Don't take it personally, Rass. I know a lot of you guys dislike my music too, and I'm fine with that. fwiw, my dislike for DD has nothing to do with the band's popularity with tween girls. I just never loved their music. Plus bonus negative points for appearing to care more about their stylish appearance and videos than their music.

There are times in your lives when you wish you had been old enough to have seen a performance live in person. This is the band for me. I had no idea who they were until I read Our Band Could Be Your Life. I just fell in love with them. Not sure what it was, but it was instant.

Interesting pick. I got into them after they had already broken up, after getting my interest piqued by Uncle Tupelo's song, "D. Boon". A pretty influential punk band.

Kind of apropos of nothing, but while in Bonaire last summer it was fascinating how much slower the tempo was on Despacito than here in the States.

I think with Duran Duran, in particular, some of us were in jr. high or high school and there's a twinge of jealousy for just how much the girls loved them.
AND, that we were into shit like Ozzy or Poison or Fugazi or whatever the fuck and they were VERY cheesy with what showed up on MTV.
