Just to follow up on the original story, a couple of days after incident, the Collingwood Team President was on a Morning radio show here and said that Goodes could be used in promotion for the King Kong theatre show that is playing here in Melbourne.

I hate it when a white guys tries to look all badass and puff up his feathers and try to intimidate people with a fucking stare.

I don't have an opinion on Birdman, though.

Roger Goodell says the nickname "Redskins" stands for "strength, courage, pride and respect".

I'm guessing he didn't take a poll on a reservation to come to that conclusion. I don't know, but perhaps they use a different term when showing respect.

Winds are shifting.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday that the NFL should pay attention to those offended by the Washington Redskins nickname.

"If we are offending one person, we need to be listening," Goodell said Wednesday in an interview with WJFK-FM, "and making sure that we're doing the right things to try to address that."

So, about 7 years ago, I taught at an inner-city, Memphis high school. Treadwell High, which was shut down for underachieving (actually it was shut down because the high schoolers were impregnating the middle schoolers at an unhealthy rate, but that's another story), was the alma mater of basketball luminaries Elliot Perry and Penny Hardaway. Basically, it was one of the poorest, worst performing schools in the United States. Our salutatorian scored a 17 on the ACT (like a 830 on SAT).

Treadwell was 99% black. The majority of the kids had the typical heritage of most black people in America, but there was an influx of students who immigrants from West Africa (Nigeria mostly). The students in the majority referred to themselves as black and the other students as Africans, so I will do the same for the purpose of this story. The black kids acted toward the Africans with a racist malice that would get most adults fired from their jobs. The black kids called the Africans "monkeys" and "gorillas," made fun of how "black" they were, and would make "hooting" noises at them. The black kids were obviously oblivious to history of those slurs and shrugged off the instruction and chastising of older black teachers regarding that history. They did not learn these slurs from their parents or elders--most did not have parents. The slurs were inspired by the muse of pubescence, that natural desire of teenage kids to find and use the most hurtful language they can create.

Basically, if you want to see unbridled hate born of ignorance, observe how teenagers treat each other. The actions of the 13 year old girl that inspired this thread are not unique to her. Kids are mean ass pieces of shit that will say whatever they can to hurt people they want to hurt. She wasn't being racist. Dude probably looked like an ape, and she knew that pointing that out would hurt him more than any other slur she could throw at him.

My guess is Mr. Goodell suddenly realized the Redskins weren't as valuable as he thought.

We all look like apes. We're all African for that matter. Hey, that'd be a great t-shirt.

Anyone who thinks science doesn't have moral answers is nuts. If people ever took some time to do some serious study into our biological origins there would be no racism. Race is a social concept created by humans that had no understanding of evolution. Biology doesn't even recognize it. We would realize that having dark skin is no different than having dark hair. Genetic variations, man. My DNA could be closer to some bushman in the Kalahari desert than to my next door neighbor.

Back in 2006 I alerted some dude named "Jackie Chiles" of the mascot of Robstown High School in Corpus Christi, TX. It was then and is still now the Cottonpickers.

Everyone seems to be cool with it. (Oddly enough, Gene Upshaw attended the school back in the day according to the Wiki page.)

So I'm just kind of blasé on the whole Redskins thing, basically. I wish Gene was still alive to give his 2 cents though.

I've never been a big fan of Twitter. It seems that the direct line into the typical posters thoughts is not very enlightening. The new Miss America is a good example.

http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/ ... klash.html
Here's a sampling of some of the worst tweets:

"I swear I'm not racist but this is America."
"If you're #Miss America you should have to be American"
"Miss America? You mean Miss 7-11."
"Even Miss America has been outsourced to India. #NinaDavuluri!"
"WHEN WILL A WHITE WOMAN WIN #MISSAMERICA? Ever??!!"
"And the Arab wins Miss America. Classic."
"Congratulations Al-Qaeda. Our Miss America is one of you."
"Well they just picked a Muslim for Miss America. That must've made Obama happy. Maybe he had a vote."
"9/11 was 4 days ago and she gets miss America?"
A few weeks ago a student @ PSU tweeted the following(the Hub is the sudent union)...
Dear most of the black community at penn state: the hub is not your playground, please stop shouting, and dancing and playing music.
She has since been outed in the school paper and appears to be taking a good amount of abuse.

Seriously though, it is kind of messed up that in 75 years or however long the pageant has been held, a white women has never won.

Why is this a big deal? There was a Muslim Miss USA a few years ago (2010?). An actual Muslim, not an Indian. (I know some Americans still can't tell the difference). The girl who's now on WWE and once dated Ricky Romero.

There wasn't outrage back then. Is Miss America supposed to be more wholesome then Miss USA?

Also, why do people/services/news orgs compile these tweets for everyone to see? We can see the dregs of society if we go look for it.

Miss America? Yeah, but Canada is my home now. (Ba-dum-bum-tchshhh!)

Can we now expect a "Miss America Birthers" movement demanding to see her birth certificate and then claiming it was a Photoshopped forgery all along? That she's really a communist Muslim whose agenda is to bring America down from the inside? She is, in fact, Obama's Nigerian cousin? And her real name is Al-Nibaal Soetoro Clickingsound?

The bean counting in Miss America has nothing on the Canadian version. Nope. It's just like every television commercial made in Canada; one of this, one of that, one of everything; all happily commingling. Canada just resurrected the Miss Canada pageant; it was defunct for about twenty years. And it would not be the least bit surprising if a schizophrenic wheelchair-bound Eskimo were to win.

Although that event certainly lacks the prestige of its American counterpart. The girl that won Miss Canada a year or two ago went on to become a bartender.

There have been no minorities in the last 10 faggy Tim Hortons commercials. (thank goodness)

Well . . . " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I don't mind the rainbow advertising in Canada; it makes sense, in advertising, to reach out to everyone. But it is absurdly misrepresentative at times, particularly the Government of Canada advertising. Or Capital One. Ever see that "Rocks and Rings" commercial during TSN curling coverage? You know the one. Every single kid in the commercial is East Indian (or Chinese). And they ran that commercial for years until somebody made them digitally insert a lone White kid (blond girl, teal shirt). But marketing is marketing.

At least Tim Hortons stopped that bogus "pay it forward" nonsense where mysterious strangers were *cough cough* visiting Timmay locations and buying coffee for the next 500 customers. Although it probably was an effective marketing hoax.

You'll never be able to convince me that the next year's contest wasn't fixed. Why? Because Larry Flynt, before the pageant, announced he had nude photos of one of the 50 contestants and if she was the winner, they'd be published. Which led to Miss America being from Utah...a BYU coed named Sharlene Wells.

Another good trivia question: Who is on the cover of the Penthouse with the Vanessa Williams pictures? Vanessa....and George Burns! And the Centerfold? An underage Traci Lords!
