NFL 2022-23

I can't be expected to watch baseball. Oil stole my summer distraction. Gonna go to a high school 7on7s one of these weekends. When do they start hitting?

Anyone else think the media pearl-clutching over a four-hour a week independent study clause is absolutely ridiculous?

I think the inclusion and its public disclosure is a pretty big red flag.

Why? The team that liked him so much to give him a 160 million guaranteed contract and he was so offended by this clause that he signed this contract. Why does the media care about this clause so much if they don't?

This could be because my opinion of current sports journalism is just above my opinions on how fun burning the roof of my mouth on a hot pizza roll and jamming my pinky toe into my couch leg is, but to me this is a "interesting clause here" and move on.

Via The Athletic:
To earn those four hours of weekly credit, the team will monitor Murray’s iPad usage to ensure he avoids activity that might “distract his attention” (actual contract language!) while he does this independent study.
Even if this wasn't the tail end of the slow season where any NFL story is going to get run into the ground that's noteworthy, unless it comes to light that this is a common contract clause. In which case see the second reason misterd mentioned.

The article I saw thought it was at least rare, if not unprecedented.

I should be more clear: I'm not saying the red flag is with Murray, it could be with the Arizona org or their HC or whoever insisted. But its definitely weird and I'm guessing Brady and Mahomes et all have never had this sort of thing considered.

I land on this side. That's a nutso clause and if the Cardinals felt it necessary maybe time to move on rather than go to a $230 million dollar contract with $110 million guaranteed for a guy that you clearly don't trust to do what is necessary.

I wish the Texans had done something similar with David "last to leave his and first to get to his" Carr.

I think to me, after the simmering bad blood between the org and player, if the inclusion of this is so crazy, no way Murray agrees to it and it's used against the Cardinals in the media. Since they both agreed to it, who fucking cares?

I don't think it should have been publicized, but now that it has, it seems to me like the union should have an issue with this. Seems too easy that the Cardinals could use this in bad faith if they wanted to do so down the line.

Bears signed Riley Reiff. Clearly a sign for their second-year QB to make a massive jump and the team to make a surprise Super Bowl berth.

That's how this works, right, Bengal?

Shouldn't it be a Microsoft Surface. Hope he knows to buy a second iPad for when he has to email his brother or other distractions of attention come up.

I too am shocked that a, what, top 10-15 QB swallowed his pride and signed one of the largest contracts in NFL history with 2 years left on his rookie contract.

Do you not recognize the magnitude of this contract and his lack of leverage?

Why do you care that the football media is reporting on a weird thing happening with a football contract?

Those charts kind of say the opposite of what it's implying. While the overall trend goes down as the season progresses, in 2019, he had 3 of his 5 highest scoring games in the 4 weeks after the release, and had his lowest score the week before the release. In 2021, he had his third highest score of the season his first game played after CoD released. He has a steady trend of getting worse as every season progresses, but that starts before CoD releases every year. I also remember someone posting an article about Kingsbury teams in college and the Cardinals collapsing throughout the season because he pushes them too hard. Not to mention, a tiny running QB is bound to pick up injuries throughout the season, so it makes sense his stats are better when he is fresh.

Come on Syb, when you're a level one sniper you're gonna get frustrated and focus on other things like your job, but after a couple of week your level 158 sniper is gonna be a lot more fun to play.

I thought Burrow had good timing, but this is a Me-first move outta him. You need to plan your emergency appendectomy a little bit earlier in the offseason, Jeaux.

I'll probably be watching a lot more Lions games this year so I may have a more informed opinion on that eventually but my take on the few games I watched last year was he erred on the side of being overly aggressive, which I generally don't have a problem with.

Mike Sando and his fucking quarterback tiers article is on Bill Barnwell's podcast. I hate that article because it's simply a collection of numbers that he takes as gospel when it could just be a table. I could just simply skip it, but since I'm a completist I'll be stuck listening to it, cursing myself all the while like an asshole.

I don't like Tier-based lists as I think it's the most lazy form of writing, on the par with BuzzFeed and Fortune (the BuzzFeed of economics/business). The Tier thing I do like is the form that Off-the-Charts Football uses, where as former NFL scouts they use the terms scouts use for QBs:

Win Because Of
Win With
Win Despite Of
Just Can't Win Because This Guy Is Trash.
