New thread. Red October!

I'm going to miss the first few innings of the Phillies first appearance since the year we shot bin Laden in the fucking face. I'll be on a train back from DC to get fingerprinted. Hopefully good wifi on Amtrak.

I don't hate the best of 3 wild card, but wasn't one of the points of the previous format to force a team out of its preferred pitching rotation? Now, you can pitch your ace in Game 1 of both the WC and the DS with 3 days rest. I know starting pitching isn't what it used to be but that still feels important.

Anyway, I'll go with Astros over Cardinals because everyone deserves that.

I dunno. Won’t teams be concerned about burning out their ace if he goes on three days’ rest at the start of what you hope will be a three-week playoff?

Edit: And no one deserves that.

Edit again: Four weeks? Really?

my daughter has become a diehard Jays fan over the past few years and her 17th bday is this weekend - I got us 2 tix to game 2 in Toronto on Saturday. We're sitting somewhere like halfway up the CNTower but still, we're pretty excited :)

That’s awesome. I know “baseball is boring” but the atmosphere at playoff / important games is incredible.

Last time I was at a Phils playoff game was in 2011, and I met up with ljam and TTB after the Phils took a 4-0 lead off Chris Carpenter with Cliff Lee on the hill. The Phils got one hit the rest of the game and Lee inexplicably gave up a lead that may have ended the series right there, even though it was only Game 2. Texting ljam on Monday when the Phils clinched to finally go back to the playoffs I believe may have been the first time we contacted each other since then. A lot has changed in 11 years.

That is so awesome. Hopefully your daughter will bring better luck. Though I'm rooting for Seattle, dammit.

My playoff-game record is 0-1 without kids (in an elimination game) and 2-0 with kids.

I'm 1-1-1 (no rooting interest when Philadelphia played ... someone).

Playoff Baseball is a completely different animal, and my first postseason game is literally a top five life moment for me (Hell, it might be third after the first place tie of the birth of my kids). My record is 3-1:

2008 WS Game 5, both days
2009 NLDS Game 1, first Cliff Lee Philly playoff start
2009, NLCS Game 4, the Jimmy Rollins walk-off double against Jonathan Broxton
2011, NLDS Game 2, mentioned by J-Hip above.

I’m 2-0 in playoff games but my regular season record is pretty grim I think.

(2006 ALCS Game 4, 2006 WS Game 2)

I can't see this and not think of Grant Balfour talking about what he ate at one of our old go-to Wilmington DE spots.

"I got a good burger down the street at the tavern," Balfour said after a trip to the Washington Ale House. "Bleu cheese burger. I highly recommend it with the hardy chili. Hopefully, it's a winning combination."

Insane to go double beef, let alone double meat, but he was an athlete and I'm not. Also, its Washington Street Ale House.

Funny you should mention that place. I remember I was doing some work down there. When we went out for lunch, we stopped there to eat. One attorney who was Jewish ordered a crab cake sandwich with bacon and cheddar, to which I replied something along the lines of "I take it you don't give a fuck about eating Kosher."

To which he replied something along the lines of "just because my ancestors didn't know to cook pork long enough to fight off trichinosis I can't eat bacon? Fuck that."

I honestly can't remember how many I've been to because I've been extremely lucky to get free tickets and the ones in 2004-05 are kind of a blur. I was at this one though and remember pretty much the entire crowd stood for every batter of the 9 extra innings.

If we're getting into specifics

1989 NLCS Game 5 - Cubs lose and are eliminated. Candlestick Park after Will Clark's bases-loaded single is still the loudest thing I've ever heard.
2016 NLCS Game 4 - Much better experience.
2016 NLCS Game 5 - Even betterer.

Is it good for baseball that I didn’t realize the playoffs started today and also don’t know if this is sudden death or best of three or best of five series?

Alex Rod: the hardest hit ball by the Phillies this inning? 88 miles per hour.

The Cardinals weren't at DP depth, despite trying to protect a one out, bases loaded, one run lead. I guess they weren't drawn all the way, but where was Edman on the depth? He appeared to be in the basepath?

Yeah, he was in-in, just tough placement. Easy 4-3 otherwise.

Right. The grounder was a little too far to the right side to try a 4-6-3, but that inning ends with one run scored had he been placed properly.

And what was the cost for Luis Castillo again? A package centered around Anthony Volpe? :?:

Given what Seattle gave up I’d have to think Peraza wouldn’t have been enough of a headliner. He’s looked incredible and the contract he signed is a massive steal.

the ball that went under Edman gave them a 3-2 lead. Bohm had the first RBI of the 9th on the HBP. I think Edman was in because the tying run was on third and turning two with Segura isn't a guarantee (and probably wouldn't have happened on that hit?)

but yeah, there's a chance it goes to extras at 2-2

Whoops. I meant it should've gone to the bot 9 tied. Forgot the initial run was scored on a HBP (ouch).

Edman was swapped over to 2B in the 8th I think. If he were at a proper depth, that ball's not getting by him. I guess Marmol was rolling the dice that a ground ball pitcher would induce weak enough contact to throw out a runner at the plate.

Btw, Helsley only gave up more than one run once in 54 appearances in the '22 season.
