the US missed a chance to pick a heel team. Koepka, Bryson, Reed, Phil etc... Phil vs Rory on Sunday would get peak ratings.

An amateur won the PGA tour event this week. Two thoughts on that. First, it probably says something about the watering down of the Tour. Second, does he get to announce he’s a pro on the spot so he can get the money? How does that work?

Well, the guy won the U.S. Amateur last year, so it’s not like he’s a schmuck who just got super lucky. Both Tiger and Jack have claimed they view their U.S. Amateur titles as being on par with winning a major. So I don’t think you can make any claims that this is due to watering down of the PGA Tour.

If I recall correctly, he can’t change his status mid-tournament, so he’s an amateur throughout the tournament. And since he’s the reigning Amateur winner, he gets entry into three of the majors but he’d lose that access if he turned pro.

Yeah, Dunlap is really freaking good.

He forfeits his guaranteed berth into the US Open if he turns pro, but would be in the PGA and the Masters since he won + all the signature events and he's in the Players regardless of his status.

Yeah it doesn’t say anything about how watered down the tour is. I mean maybe Abe Ancer would have won this week? But this is a US Amateur champ as a couple guys said. Dude can ball.

Just realized LIV scheduled an event in Las Vegas the weekend of the Super Bowl which seems idiotically on-brand for them.

ETA: think most ppl know but the Super Bowl is in Vegas this year so hotels etc are at a premium.

Until the addition of the 17th regular season NFL game, when the Super Bowl was in Glendale, it was always the same weekend as the Waste Management Open in Scottsdale (or whatever the Phoenix-adjacent party hard PGA event is/was called).

I am sure the deep pocket backers on the LIV are not worried about that. Instead they are thinking where will all of the big wig advertisers and sports brand people going to be. Plus all of the media members, radio row goof balls, etc. If you are looking to sell your product, it makes an easy way to engage.

Got to the course, had to decide left or right at a crossroads, buddy chose right. First player we see? Eldrick. Never been that close to him before. Watched him chip and putt on 8, then tee off on 9 and then walk within 10-12 feet.

Saw the LIV contingent (None of these guys looks as big in real life as in person) of Brooks, DJ, Gary Woodland, then Patrick reed came along, playing alone with his wife also inside the ropes following. That's a weird dynamic they have. For the record,Reed was very personable and joking with the other fans where he was chipping from, about 30 feet from us. But it' still weird.

Scott Van Pelt was walking with the Kopeka/DJ/Woodland group and then on our way out walked just past Marty Smith, but a group of bros started taking photos with him. Was going to say hello, but too many "HALLA" hats to penetrate.

Woodland is still in PGA.

Yeah, but he was playing with LIV guys on all sides. I only had tickets for yesterday's practice round, so no I won't be back I don't think. And to be honest I prefer to watch the real tournament on TV.

Is Valhalla hard? Like, what do you expect for a winning number? 10-15?

Valhalla is not hard for professionals. There are some good forced carries and split fairways to make players think, but I expect the number to be -15 or more.Spieth, Schauffele and Hovland already -3 on their first 9 today. PLus there's a good chance of rain so some of these holes are going to get fully taken advantage of this weekend.

Wonder if fatherhood will mellow him out any...because this article in The Athletic makes him sound like a big of a psycho...

Scottie Scheffler’s secret: How a ‘venomous’ trash talker became the best golfer in the world
"But Scheffler’s little secret is that he’s not boring. He’s one of the most competitive people on the planet, a “venomous” trash-talking former basketball player who rakes in money from club members, annihilates tour pros in money games and used to run so hot his Texas coach worried it would get the best of him."

So initial reports seem to suggest:
- Pedestrian killed in accident early this AM, road closed.
- Scheffler shows up trying to get to the course, probably some confusion, thinks he can drive around
- Cop loses his shit, goes into Die Hard mode on Scheffler's car.
- Scheffler in cuffs and taken away (?) before he probably even knew what was happening.

I'm editorializing a bit here, maybe Scheffler knew what he was doing, but there's no way this could have happened at more than 20mph. And as most have twitter has pointed out, good thing this wasn't Finau/Theegala/Tiger

If he really didn't stop while the cop was holding his car, then that's dumb. It looks like a misunderstanding, but jeez. And then to not roll down window immediately? I dunno, seems like some entitled shit exacerbated by the fact he was at the course and probably figured he was in the clear.

I'm leaning the other direction on this (*from Trav) When someone dies on the road, shutting it down is protocol. Usually for many hours. Cops say don't go, don't fucking go. Seems especially important when the reason it is shut down is the death of a pedestrian. Not that I'd expect Scheffler to know the why in the moment.

In a bit more defense....the entire road is covered with cop cars, to the point my buddy and I were remarking that was the day to commit crimes in Louisville. So it's possible it looked like SOP to a golf pro.

But yes...cop says stop you stop. Thems the rules.

Yeah my guess is a mix of VIP mentality combined with the fact that in the dark with the cones and lights flashing its legitimately hard sometimes to know where to go.
I'm actually kinda surprised he's driving himself all alone. I guess I always assumed at majors they had some sort of chauffeur system or something.

That was one of the things I noticed in Full Swing. It seemed like most of the guys drove themselves.

Most of the golfers drive the courtesy cars and ride with their caddies. Driving arrangments vary I'm sure. But I assume because they all rent out the nicest houses they can there isn't a central pick up spot for everyone.

So I've seen one tweet saying he was released and was given a new tee time (around 10am) and one tweet saying he's been charged with 2nd degree assault of a police officer and reckless driving (pun!), so who knows what's going on.
