I think sauerkraut balls is actually a condition teenage German boys get when their fräulein won’t let them get beyond second base.

I didn't realize how much of an increase there's been in people moving to the southern states from elsewhere in the US. I've heard about in-migration into places like VA, NC, GA, and TX, but I didn't realize that also affected MS, AL, TN, AR, OK.

Fascinating, but I don’t have 25 minutes… what’s the deal, they assumed the Baja Peninsula was an island, not attached to North America?

Re: Random Cartography
So each morning my phone suggests a route to work with an estimated ETA. However, me, with my superior brain, knows that's a trap route. So I never take it (way more traffic, more stoplights, etc., but ends with a 55 mph speedlimit for a few miles that presumably is how it says that is the best route). I have a route I use and I consistently beat Apple Maps by 4-5 minutes. So how come it doesn't remember that I drive this route 98% of all work days and it's faster than what it said? I'm back off the train. AI is useless.

Re: Random Cartography
Have you tried Google Maps or Waze? Routing is actually a pretty complex problem, especially when you add in real-world variables like actual and predicted traffic (not to mention traffic lights, time to turn left at an intersection, etc.). I almost never use Apple Maps, but anecdotally, my perception is that they aren't as good as Google or Waze.

Re: Random Cartography
Oh it's not really even a thing because I don't need the GPS to get to work and since I consistently beat the time it says I don't worry about it. But I suppose I could run some tests. And isn't Waze just google maps with an overlay now?
I got to using Apple maps for our drives to and around in Boston. It was SO much better than Google at that time. And if I do use the GPS it's thru carplay so I guess I just default to that.

Yeah, Apple Maps blows.
You can lead a horse to fish, but you can't fish out a horse.
Re: Random Cartography
The problem is probably because the apps are assuming you'll stop at red lights and slow down in school/hospital zones.

Re: Random Cartography
barking up the wrong tree here. Remember me from hits such as "nobody stops at the stop signs in my neighborhood" and "that person driving the free rides for veterans van is going way too fast AND didn't stop at a stop sign!"
Half of us here are, statistically, below average drivers. And I ain't one of them!

Re: Random Cartography
For the two days I go in a week, instead of taking the highways, I take a city street that basically runs from my suburb ending past downtown Houston if you're going east. (I think it might actually be one of the longest continual streets in the US, but I'll let AB check on that for me*). It always says it's about 10 minutes slower that the other routes, but I have grown accustomed to the traffic light patterns so I know pretty much which lights I'll hit each day. It's also fun watching my ETA move up as I make a certain set of lights. One day it went down 15 minutes when I didn't hit a single red on about a 4-mile stretch where there are at least a dozen lights. It was a glorious day, tbh.

Funny, as I was reading this I thought "maybe Colfax"... That is a bonkers road.

Are you saying that you still turn on maps if you are going somewhere you go regularly or know how to get to? Does everyone else do this?

Yup. I’ve been saved many times when I can tell either a wreck has happened or lights are blinking so it’ll either direct me a new way or I know the backroads so well I know where to pivot.

Re: Random Cartography
Yeah, I quite often do it for traffic reasons. Never know when shit has gone crazy.
BTW, Google owns Waze and uses some of their data in Google Maps. I assumed there were essentially the same, but I no longer think they are. I prefer Google's interface and it's much better for looking up shit on your route, but I do think that Waze is still better at finding the fastest route.

Colfax is advertised around here as the longest continuously named street in the U.S. but I have no idea who made that declaration and/or what the criteria is.

We have a main drag here in the west suburbs that travel time is all about making it through the first light, if you get stopped add 25-30 minutes as you're getting EVERY light on the way South.
Did you see that ludicrous display last night?
Re: Random Cartography
According to WIki: "At just under 50 miles in length, it is known as the "longest continuous commercial street in America." "

Re: Random Cartography
In my experience Google Maps has never updated fast enough for it to make a difference if traffic gets much worse or an accident pops up if I'm using it to, say, go into Denver for a Nuggets game or something. It's about a 40 minute drive for me mostly interstate.
