each game is different

the way the US played against Ghana you wouldn't have thought they would play that way against Portugal and watching that you'd wouldn't have thought they'd play this way against Germany.

Much respect to Portugal. They showed heart I didn't think they had.

And anyone thinking we backed in -- we were the second best team in this group. We fucking deserved to go through.

Hope "we backed in" doesn't become a thing. Totally deserved to go through. Great results from this Cup so far. Feel so much better abou this than when we got through to the 16 in 2010.

He bought me a Portugal Figo t-shirt and said the above quote. 5 years later, the asshole went to South Africa and went to all 3 US games. Fucker. Anywho, I think I am wearing that Portugal shirt for the next couple of days.

Despite my joke about backing in, we did deserve to advance. Switch the order of the games to Ger/Ghana/Portugal, it looks a lot different.

Great defensive effort against one of the best offensive powers. Omar was fantastic. Beslar didn't make a sing misstep, Beasley was beaten a bunch, but recovered and looked great going forward. Jones has been an absolute beast all tournament. I have always been leery of him, but he has really shown restraint in not taking stupid cards, his work rate is phenomenal, and he is even going forward. I always said that Jones adds nothing going forward, and I still have no idea where that goal came from. Jones is my US player of the tournament.

Huge plus that nobody gets suspended on 2 yellows. They yellows reset now, right?

Bradley's first touch has been atrocious. WTF is wrong with him? Great effort and a good game otherwise, but he keeps missing simple traps. I think his mistakes have gotten into his head a bit.

One advantage of finishing second that I haven't seen anyone mention is the extra day of rest. Playing Tuesday instead of Monday doesn't suck.

Fair point, especially since post-Maneus legs were a negative factor for our side in this one.

Only Portugal today played in Maneus and then one their next game. And that was kinda on a fluky goal to boot.

The odds are like 200-to-1 but you start to look at the bracket and see a possible US-Mexico semifinal and damn if that game might not set off a war.

Also, I see Bradley getting a lot of crap today on twitter for his play, and I agree that he wasn't very good in spots, that said, I fully expect him to put together a complete game at some point equal to how good he was against Portugal without the last minute mistake. I am actually really heartened that this team is through with Bradley really not playing anywhere near his best and Jozy having been out. Good stuff.

Has there been any discussion at all about what happened when we scrimmaged against Belgium on June 12? I know they housed us pretty good last year in a friendly.

I was at the friendly last year. Here's a game story from the US Soccer Web site about the game. And here's a Swamp thread about the game.

I mostly remember that Romelu Lukaku looks like he could play linebacker for any NFL team. Damn, is he big and fast.

brian wrote:And for those of you guys who do not have multiple screens going, Portugal does NOT look invested in this game at all.

That result was unbelievable. I can't tell you how much I thought Ghana was going to score... Not invested is a massive understatement, at that point that you posted that.

But, then... Ghana just looked disinterested at a certain point. It's not that some of them didn't put in effort, but they very rarely put together a collective effort forward, and were extremely lax getting back.

So, a moping, plodding Portugal team was allowed multiple counters... eventually leading to probably the 2nd worse goal of the tournament (that Russian dude is going to take that title, barring some true buffoonery.)

And once it was 2-1, Ghana really just quit. To the point that I started almost getting nervous that they'd allow Portugal to start pounding in goals. Thankfully, Portugal were still in supreme sulk mode and after a couple of close calls with CR, they stopped pressing with about 4 or 5 minutes to go.

Overall, that shit was just bizarre to watch.
