Vikings/Packers tonight, a little more juice there if Bridgewater can go.

Ravens/Colts on Sunday should be a good one - maybe best game of day on paper.

That 2011 draft - 10th pick Blaine Gabbert, 12th pick Christian Ponder.

A lot of scouts and NFL geniuses must have at some point thought that these two guys would succeed in the NFL.

Just for fun - 11th pick, JJ Watt and 14th pick Robert Quinn.

I can't find it but I remember posting a mock draft that was incredulous that Gabbs was considered a top 10 prospect.

And Jake Locker for that matter. There have been some real QB whiffs of late.

It's why I think the Bengals get too much heat for Dalton. Rather take a shot in round 2 like they did than reach in round 1.

And I remember my friends and I being upset at the Watt pick. I'll admit it! We wanted Prince Akamuruaaraurua. Just like we wanted Baby Jordan over Robert Horry (WHO?!?) in the '93 NBA draft.

With all the Geno bashing in New York, I've been thinking about the recent trend of expecting drafted QBs to succeed immediately. In the old days (80s and 90s), it was standard that a QB prospect would hold the clipboard for 2 or 3 years to learn the game before being given a shot. Conventional wisdom was that a rookie couldn't succeed. Peyton Manning was an outlier, and he kind of proved the CW right, although he beat the odds and improved into an adequate QB.

When did the CW change? Do coaches have more pressure to start young QBs? Is it because college playbooks are more advanced and similar to pro playbooks?

I think of late - maybe some change due to rookie salary cap? If you can get a qb and get them good soon, they are cost effective for four years on their rookie deals...maybe that has something to do with it?

I have seen it on both sides in last decade. Bengals sat Palmer for a year behind Kitna and he was just fine when he finally started. But Bengals have been awfully regular season successful (playoff losses acknowledged) with Dalton under center from day 1.

I hate it too, primarily because I want my Sundays as stuffed with games as possible. I wish they played 8 games at 1:00 and 8 at 4:00 and then went away while I played with my jerk kids for the other 6 days.

Why do they only help one team?

GB and Seattle had all offseason to prepare, yet they still had a blowout as well. Probably just bad matchups.

Weren't there people who used to blame Super Bowl blowouts on the 2-week layoff, saying it gave the superior team too much time to gameplan?

I do think the circumstances sucked for Ponder this week. Not that he could have made up 25 points with a few more days of prep, but that's a tough spot.

I like watching football so I like there being games on Thursday nights. If it's a shitty game, I won't watch it...which is exactly what I'd be doing if there's no game. Absolutely nothing to lose.

Thank god that Vikings ass kicking happened on a Thursday, my weekly pool only includes sunday and monday games and i never bet against the Vikings in this pool, no matter what the spread. And I have a feeling it wasn't Vikings +32.

Maybe I have a chance this week...

I turned it off and went to bed after it was 7-0 for Green Bay and Lacy busted through for 18 and then 29 yards in two consecutive plays. And I'm a Vikings fan. I just knew it would be a bad night for Minnesota. Woke up with a bunch of texts making fun of my team, but at least i got a good night's sleep.

I think modern QBs are considered to be ready at an earlier age due to:
1. Colleges running pro-type passing offenses, or at least throwing the ball a lot
2. High schools throwing the ball
3. Summer passing leagues (e.g., 7 v 7)
4. Summer QB camps and private QB coaches

In many cases, gifted young quarterbacks are developing 10-12 months per year, starting early in high school.
