See, that's the difference between you and me. I see that the Flames are doing well, and I think, 'Oh, I bet degen is enjoying this. How nice for him.' Are you against my happiness, degen? DO MY FEELINGS NOT MATTER?! Can't we just combine our superpowers and hate Vegas together?

I have to hear Oilers accolades everyday. Even when they lose 4-1 to Dallas. So YAWN.

You can't be an Oilers fan and feel good for me!

Something I have picked up watching the Caps. Ovi is getting lots of ice time when the opposing team pulls their goalie. #8 does not have the reputation as the hardest defensive worker and not sure I want him putting his body in front of shots on extra man situations....but guess the Caps are going to give him every chance to get easy goals. 18 behind Jagr after getting a goal in the 2nd period today.

Also after Friday's game he is tied for 6th in all time hat tricks at 28 (Gretzky has 50, Super Mario had 40)

Gretzky had 56 empty net goals compared to Ovi's 42.

Not yet. Looks.like the caps are still surrounding him with talent to go.for a cup again. Would agree with you if they let some of their other veterans go, but they have paid their top players.

You may have read that the Sharks put Evander Kane on waivers and getting no claims, will now assign him to the AHL Barracuda rather than just paying him to stay away (even though they apparently have no interest in him playing as a Shark anymore). Obviously, their plan is to get him into playing shape in the hope that they can trade him. Couple of good pieces about it in The Athletic. The Sharks are willing to retain half his $7 million annual salary (max allowed). If they brought in a third team on the deal, they could halve it again. Might find a taker willing to roll the dice on him if their financial risk was down to $1.75 mill.

Might find a team to take the contract off their hands for a fee, but I can't imagine any team is going to put him in their locker room at this point.

ƒ The Evander Kane situation is just sad. Or maybe it's deserved. I have no idea. All I know is that I listened to Heart's 'Barracuda' today for the first time in years, and that song is effing great.

ƒ Ovechkin is second in goals, second in scoring. Unreal.

ƒ Pens/Oilers tonight. That's usually like a holiday for me, but a lot of the luster is off the Pens this year. At least until Malkin is back and I can figure out what this team actually is.

More injuries/illness for the Oilers' defense, so the next few games are going to be interesting. Tonight, they'll presumably be starting Kris Russell and Tyson Barrie, who are what they are, and Bouchard (41 NHL games), Lagesson (29 games), Broberg (4 games), and Niemelainen (0 games). Hoo boy. I'm weirdly excited about it. Broberg actually led the team in ice time vs Vegas, so it's not like there's any way to shelter all of these guys.

I defended Kane for yeeeeeeears and still think he could have been a wonderful guy and would have received the same amount of shit early but we're just past that now. Too many stories piling up that are kinda hard to ignore in sum.

Earlier this year, when the Sharks lost 7 guys to Covid for several games, four of them were of the six regular defensemen. The remaining two regulars, Brent Burns and Mario Ferraro, were playing over 30 minutes a night over that span.

Yep. None of us are 'in the room,' obviously, so we don't know what the story is. But if a team doesn't want you around, that's probably a good indicator.

Yeah, that was led by his teammates, too, rather than management. It's been noted in many articles that he regularly flouted many team rules and generally alienated those around him. He was given a long leash due to his being a leading scorer and one of the best players on the team. But, it was clear in everything written and said over the past few months that the team is more cohesive and has better morale this season, in large part because Kane is gone.

Yeah, no way I'll see much of this one, unless I watch it tomorrow morning.

Learned today: The Oilers haven't beaten the Pens in regulation since 2006. Shawn Horcoff scored a hat trick. Afterwards, Michel Therrien held his all-time-great 'SOFF' press conference.

Also, I just read that the Pens will be wearing new alternates this year, with the diagonal 'Pittsburgh' across the front. Yep, the '90s 'Snoop Dogg' jerseys. This is certainly the biggest hockey story of the day. Or the week. Or the millennium.

They're beauts. Substitute the current logo for the pigeon logo on the shoulder. And substitute, like, Jake Guentzel or Bryan Rust for Petr Nedved.

Going to bed early (or at least before the game was over) was a good call, at least from an "I don't care to stay up and watch McDavid be awesome and wear down my favorite team" point of view.

Didn't watch. Just looking at the numbers now and reading recaps. Looks like the Pens dominated possession all night, but the Oilers capitalized on odd-man breaks. McDavid had horrible numbers, but finished with a goal and three assists. Crosby dictated play, but was on the ice for a quadrillion goals against. That's going to happen sometimes.

The Pens play Vancouver and Seattle next. They need some wins.

Not worth linking to the story because the first (poorly written) sentence adequately sums up this chapter from the files of the "Oh, Look, Are Those the Consequences of My Actions":
The Red Wings placed forward Tyler Bertuzzi — the only unvaccinated player in the NHL against the coronavirus — on COVID-19 protocol list Wednesday.
So, that's ten days on the shelf, which will include five games, starting with last night's. He had already missed three games played in Canada due to being unvaccinated with six more to come. Tack on these five he's going to miss and he can max out at a 68-game season. And that doesn't include how the effects may carry on through the remainder of the season (and beyond).

First in plus-minus, third in goals and points, fifth in ice time, and last in my heart.

I think both are true, but most teams have figured out that possession is sometimes more important than taking chances with the puck which can be a little boring, but inevitably in 3 on 3 there's going to be some action.

Fuck. One of those terrifying hits in the Rangers game where Trouba caught Khaira who was fumbling the puck in his skates. Hit his head on the ice and wasn’t moving and looked so bad even the line brawl that was about to start was abandoned and Strome ignored all that to rush over. I think it was legal, maybe not, but either way you can lead every argument for ending open ice hits with that one. Just awful.

Oilers/Wild tonight. I actually get to watch this one live. Okay, I'll probably fall asleep and watch part of it tomorrow morning. Anyway, hello, Swamp puckers. I hope your night is going well and that the two best players on your team are leading the league in scoring.

Follow-ups on some young'uns I've been hyping up around these parts. Trevor Zegras of Anaheim just did this. Maybe the filthiest goal I've ever seen. My g-d, that's some beautiful shit.

Related: Matvei Michkov, probably the first pick in the 2023 NHL Draft, scored a couple of Michigan/lacrosse goals recently. This one is amazing, because it came off a rebound and was just his first reaction.

And the downer part of this post: Bowen Byram, the Colorado defenseman, is out with a concussion. He suffered a couple of concussions last season and took a long time getting over them. Got elbowed a few weeks ago, missed some games, came back, and now he's out again. Three concussions in a year, and only 20 years old. Yeah, this sucks.
