FMD: Songs Others Like That, in Actuality, Suck.

Post by A_B »

I'll go first, since that's how starting a thread works.

Hallelujah. I don't think there's a version of it I like. I think it's got stupid lyrics and the music is boring. Fuck your major lift, Leonard.
Hold on, I'm trying to see if Jack London ever gets this fire built or not.

The original Tears For Fears “Mad World” is a perfectly fine 80s tune. Every slowed-down, overly maudlin cover of it since is hot garbage.

How about the entire practice of re-arranging 80's jams into acoustic songs. It was cute when Nouvelle Vague did it 20 years ago, not so much anymore.

The genre known as 'TrailerCore' because of its heavy usage in movie trailers.

A sad, slowed-down breakdown of trailercore
Anyone who’s watched a trailer for basically any genre of movie over the past 10 years or so — from horror and action to serious dramas — has probably encountered the “trailercore” phenomenon. Basically, it’s when a movie trailer uses a cover version of a familiar song that’s been slowed down and stripped back, with added emotional emphasis to the lyrics, usually overlaying them with darker meaning. Oh, and the song is usually a nauseatingly on-the-nose match for some basic idea in the movie’s premise: Pink Floyd’s “Eclipse” in the Dune trailer, “I’ve Got No Strings” for Avengers: Age of Ultron, “Crazy” in the Birdman trailer, or “I Started a Joke” for Suicide Squad, to name just a handful. Usually, the trailer starts off with a score that builds up to the drop of the song, where viewers are meant to make the connection and experience a moment of shock and awe. But after a decade of this technique, it’s become harder to get that kind of strong reaction. There’s an art to trailercore, and not all trailers are made equally.

One of a triumvirate of Sinatra songs, along with “That’s Life” and “My Way” that true Sinatra fans despise, and think that anyone that do are assholes.

Since we are picking on Rass, I’ll say “most of the yacht rock genre”. (And, co-sign the trailer core comments.)

Previously they could be found on 'lifestyle' compilation CD's that you could get at, say, Banana Republic, Starbucks, etc.

Heh ... back in high school / college / etc. I would have said that every song that other people like sucks.

Now, definitely agree with Under the Bridge and pretty much anything by Sinatra, Harry Connick Jr., or anyone else in that style.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

I have HATED Tears For Fears since high school.

My first girlfriend and her friends would play that album and pretty much stare into space before talking about how much they hated their families.

Fuck Tears For Fears forever.

"Hotel California" and "In The Air Tonight" will be the first two songs I hear if I end up in hell.

And "Hallelujah" blows maudlin chunks.

Everybody Wants to Rule the World encapsulates the vibe of the 80s about as well as Peter Gabriel's Big Time or Robert Palmer's Addicted to Love.

I literally want to have My Way and Everybody Wants To Rule The World on a playlist at my retirement ceremony. This is making me chuckle.

I don't know if I can adequately answer this question, to be honest. I'm pretty sure any song that I'd name is actually good, but I'm biased and just dislike it.

Like Sweet Home, Alabama. Song just sucks to me. But it was written in the 70s, so I have to read second hand accounts about what it means and why it exists. I can't stand the song at all regardless of that stuff at all.
