April Fools pranks (successful and otherwise)

Post by Mr. C »

In the office kitchen I pulled my usual "tape down the sprayer nozzle" prank, with the nozzle pointing at the faucet handle so the spray would innocently hit the person's hand. A couple hours into the work day a female co-worker shouts "Okay, who was trying to start a wet t-shirt contest?!" Over the course of the morning the nozzle rotated such that it pointed forward. I had to own up to it and even when I outlined my original intent my boss was not happy. She made me fill out a near-miss report for creating an unsafe work condition. I smoothed things over with my coworker, thankfully. It's still a great prank...probably safest for the home or an office full of dudes. The potential of a sexually-charged accusation is not worth the potential hilarity.

I just got a text from the kids school about this one...
Not long after school started, a student decided to play a joke on her mother, texting her a message that said there was a shooter at the South Building.
According to State College police, the mother called 911 at 9:06 a.m. Within one minute, Rosenblum said, he was joined by seven additional officers. Both the district and the State College police defaulted to a series of established protocols to address the would-be threat.

Ours are so simple. We all left our cubicles and one person stayed back to email the manager that she was the only one in today.

You guys aren't Canadian government finance bureaucrats by any chance, are you?

My advice: hire a hooker who looks a lot like the wife of the head guy to shower you with personal displays of affection when she visits your cube this afternoon. Make sure she mentions that he (get his name in here) thinks she's visiting her mother out of town.

This is at least as good as that State College school kid's thing. Though yeah, that was something no one's ever dreamed of doing.

Is anyone else kind of sick of April Fool's Day? Whenever it rolls around my reaction is "shit, it's that annual 24-hour period where attempts to acquire new information will be sabotaged by dipshits trying too hard to be funny."

I think the Internet ruined it through oversaturation. Before it would be amusing if a couple people you knew did something clever, now it's just click on any high-traffic page and "Ha-ha, April Fools, look at these WACKY fake stories! Now click here for the real ones." Plus, there usually end up being two or three that I want to be true and then I get pissed off that they aren't.

Agreed, actual pranks and fake stories are the worst. The only good one today was when one friend of mine texted a Nova fan friend of ours "Nova is in the Final Four!" as his April Fools prank. That made me laugh.

My commander pulled off one off some years ago that was excellent.

I was part of the Rescue Group at Davis-Monthan. My unit was on the hook for natural disasters, dangerous rescue missions, stuff like that while not deployed downrange. A couple weeks before April Fool's we had gotten the heads up to prep for a real world tasking because some sort of natural disaster happened. I'm completely forgetting what, but it was in 2009. So we started doing everything we had to do to get people out of town in a hurry. Intel briefs, numerous other "take care of your stuff" briefs, calls to get airlift, interaction with the hose supports squadrons that would facilitate our travel out of there in a hurry..etc. Well despite the sudden 12 hour days and cause for panic, we were never given the order to actually go. The State Dept. had it covered. We were off the hook.

Enter April Fool's. The day prior a brand new scenario was dropped on us at the end of the duty day when most had left (the ones left behind we "in" on the joke). A large flood has the potential to break out in Winnipeg. Canada is calling on us to help out fearing the worst for the city. The next day we're recalled about an hour earlier than usual. We're all given a quick brief by our sections. Some of us were like "Oh, on April 1st! How convenient!" However, there were people coming in with their bags packed and there were standard orders pulled from our secret internet that looked legit. More and more Intel kept coming in and a briefing would be held in a couple hours. We're told to start generating everything because this will go off. Now I'm wavering because, as a military member, when you're told to work, you just do it. So we start doing what we have to do. The Intel brief -- and the Commander's part in it -- happens. Everyone's names, orders, directions, guidance, gee-whiz Canada info for the area...all of it is packed into the brief and seems real. So now I'm like "Shit..." Even one of the old timers just happens to know about Winnipeg (he wasn't in on the joke, but kept noting that he received word from a friend he called that they are unaware of any floods happening. He just happened to know someone in Winnipeg. The only hiccup to the entire gag.) So the brief gets more and more dire. At the end of it, he walks off with the biggest shit eating grin ever and the slide changer subtly flips to the last side that said "April Fool's!"

Even still, some, including me, were like "Wait...that was bullshit?" It took a few moments and then it all sunk in that we got got. Everything seemed so damn real because of how specific the details of the operation were. And even the old timer that had a buddy in Winnipeg was going along despite his knowledge. We all got comped on some level for the lost time and spun wheels.

Then there was this a couple years later at the main gate. No one noticed until I had said something to the gate guards:

Taking a step back from my rant, today is the 30th anniversary of SI's George Plimpton Sidd Finch article, which may be the best April Fool's joke ever.

My kid got me with the taped spray handle. Twice. The first time, I was going to wash my hands after just cleaning up copious amounts of dog puke from our front hall. So I was already pissed. I went and changed, came downstairs to start making dinner and promptly did it again! In hindsight, that's pretty damn funny, but I was pissed at the time (which was why I made the mistake to begin with).

This one wasn't an April Fool's prank, but it's pretty damn funny.

I was teaching yesterday and I mentioned that as an April Fools joke one year my wife and I told our kids we were getting a divorce. (Neither kid believed us for a second, so it kind of sucked).

One of my students said that a couple of years ago when she was in high school one of her friends told her long time boyfriend that she was pregnant and that she had decided to keep the baby.

I almost shit my pants thinking about that poor guy.

The class thought this was either awful or hysterical. I asked the obvious follow up question and yes, the couple split up before the end of the school year.

I'm possibly the only Swamper who goes there on a regular basis, but GQ.com is putting George Costanza in all the pics on the main page.

And what happened to Festus Ezeli of the Warriors is fantastic.

I remember that the Sabres used to always run pranks on April 1st - some of which were believed.

https://slapshot.blogs.nytimes.com/2009 ... ril-fools/

This one in particular has always stayed in my mind:
Another year, Wieland announced that the Sabres were going to redevelop the waterfront area behind the old Auditorium and create a Sabres-themed amusement park, taking advantage of the ships that were docked there, building rides and games like “Block the Slapshot” and renaming all the streets in the area after different Sabres players.
