He's produced well in the AHL?

Sorry I got nothing. For whatever reason, seems destined to be a guy who can't find a niche in the NHL.

His profile sure looks like a guy whose best quality is "didn't have to shift off to a wing".

Related but the bankruptcy is new. Supposedly was between $20-50M in debt. Would probably be a fascinating documentary.

Went to the Avs-Wings game today...no better way to celebrate the legacy of MLK than ice hockey.

The Avs look like they're starting to wake up...the Red Wings barely looked like they were in it and were clearly overmatched.

2-9. Sid and Geno coming up small in shootout.

So if there's a penalty kill in OT, do they just play 4 on 4 until there's a whistle?

5 out of last 6 OT!

Yes. That 4-4 even strength went for a good bit of time last night. I used to do Hockey intervals on the treadmill. Basically alternate run hard and jog with every faceoff. When you get one of those long flows in a game it can be brutal.

Toughen up Sid...especially since they got away with one in the 3rd when the pens pulled down a guy breaking towards the goal (resulting in the caps guy knocking the goal off)

From Down Goes Brown at the Athletic...
• The only downside is we don’t get to see the Wings goalie picking his jock strap out of the back of the net. Seriously, guy got lit up like a Christmas tree by a chubby kid who’d never scored an NHL goal. Wonder if he ever lived it down.

• Hold on.

• Red Wings goalie … late 70s … not very good … no, it couldn’t be. There’s just no way. (Checks box score.) Oh no.

• The goaltender that Bruce Boudreau scored his very first goal on was, yes, Jim Rutherford. The very same guy who publicly knifed him nearly five decades later.

• Did Rutherford just play the world’s longest long game? I dumped all over him for how he handled Boudreau earlier this week, but if it was actually the culmination of a half-century grudge then I may have to rethink things. As someone who’s still seething over rejected fantasy football trades from 2004, I have to respect the level of pettiness here. And be honest, it’s as good an explanation as any you’ve heard all week.

Ah, the 2023 Sharks. Play well for 59 minutes against Carolina, to lead 3-2. Empty net goal moves it to a 4-2 lead…

Hurricanes won 5-4 in OT.

Going to my first game since March 2018 (Pens won in OT, we were there with an alumni group and got to go on the ice after the game, Taylor Hall scored and generally scared the shit out of me every time he had the puck, my dad was wearing a walking boot and almost got in a fight with some drunk asshole, I decided going to games with my kids sucks because of shit like that). Canucks at The Rock, in a suite, it's a team-building exercise for the support reps at my company but I got an invite I guess either because I help them out so much or because they think this will make me help them out more. I'm skipping out on the camaraderie of the chartered bus and taking the train by myself.

I still hate those Trouba hits. I know they're legal, but Kadri's head was thisclose to hitting the ice at full speed.

He hit Kadri right in the chest, there is no other way to hit. Kadri cant cut in like that, he has to take the outside route.

Trouba is one of the few that can do it cleanly so you are seeing less of them around the league. The timing has to be perfect, or else it's can be a hit to the head and a suspension.

Its more that the timing there was perfect and we probably weren't far from a disaster. Just take it out of the game, removed the gray "where was the precise contact" check and hopefully save someone(s) some serious issues.

And I'll just post the somewhat obligatory: Why does a clean hit like that mean they are going to fight automatically.

Take your legal hit like a human and move on. So stupid.

I get what you're saying, but NHLers are taught you stand up for a teammate if they take a cheap shot and in real time, I'm sure it looked bad. Given who it was (Dube, 1st career fight) I'm willing to carve that one out from the usual "everyone who takes a big hit fights now". The aftermath of Lucic getting hit in the 1st period fits all that to a T.

hockey is about toughness and intimidation. Even though Trouba's hit was clean, how dare he! And if there was no reaction well the Flames are wimps!
It's a culture that's behind the times putting NHL hockey ratings in the tank in 2023.

NFL the most popular sport, a player gets blown up, a fight doesn't break out. Refs handle it.

My point is that this is a shift from the norms of the 80s and 90s. Scott Stevens laying you out with a clean hip check wasn't going to be an automatic fight.

I think the fact that there is much less goon hockey, where fights were lined up after one of those hits has shifted it to what it is today. Now, a guy with 1 fight feels like it's go time because that goon isn't walking through the gate.

It's not the end of the world in terms of the overall net gain of quality of play being higher (not wasting a 4th line guy on someone that's just OK at hockey). Just kind of annoying in the moment.

You know an easy way to fix that sort of fight? Make potential head contact reviewable (another would-be positive change) unless a fight is instigated after the hit.
