Seattle at the Club World Cup. Sounders will take on Al-Ahly Saturday at noon. Winner gets Real Madrid. Al-Ahly is an Egyptian team. Game is in Tangier.

Can’t imagine any team has been there that finished lower in their league table than Seattle did.

Tall, young and of interest to Benfica? Sounds like I’ll be penciling him in for 2026 now and getting annoyed when they instead reward Miazga for coming back to MLS or something.

Nice camera work from the Apple team this weekend. I liked Dave Johnson's voice but the Apple crews were superior to the local MLS broadcasts I usually catch. I like 360 wrap around (red zone type thing)...but the studio crew is going to need a shuffle. BWP is not good, Sasha K may be able to grow to it, Andrew Wiebe is solid, and Kaylyn Kyle was horrible.

Had some hope for a better season from the Rapids this year. Holy shit they are bad. A lot of it is injuries and a little bad luck. But one goal through four games is terrifyingly bad.

Finally had Jack Price start to get back on the field over the last couple of games and it looks like he blew his Achilles on the bad home turf after less than 10 minutes of play last night. Poor guy has had terrible injury luck over the last couple of years. And not even related injuries, just fluke things.

Gonna be a long season.

I am not a Philly Union fan but have to say their academy is first class. At the Generation Adidas cup, the U-15s and U-17s have done really well. The U-15s beat Arsenal 4-1, and beat Real Madrid, and Valencia (earlier this year they beat Munich 6-0). Sent 3 kids to U-16 national team and 4 to the U-15 national team.

Haven't really been paying attention to Toronto FC lately. I just knew they'd signed two big name Italians and were at the bottom of the league.

I had no idea how bad things are.

As I'm sure you've heard, the noise around Messi to Inter Miami has really intensified overnight. I won't believe it until Woj or Shams weigh in.

I love that the defender came off his mark to close down and mattered not. That's a 1/100 strike.

Just had a walk down history lane (in a totally inappropriate thread, so I'll drop it in here:
Nonlinear FC wrote: Tue Jun 06, 2023 1:08 pm I know we're not here to be full historians on every post, but the success of MLS is only partly due to Designated Players over the years. Talking up the development of US players, moving toward a model of playing almost exclusively in soccer-specific stadiums, and the concurrent/symbiotic relationship with a National Team that has only failed to make the WC once since 1990 (I know 94 doesn't count, but it in of itself was massive for soccer dev in the US) are items that standout.

David Beckham was a MASSIVE signing and the era of adding quality (aging, not OLD) players absolutely played a role. That was in 2006-08 I think. And there were a handful of other signings in those years (Blanco comes to mind) that helped solidify or bolster the quality of the league. But, really, by then we were moving into the expansion era, a far cry from when they had to contract Miami and Tampa in the early years. The league added a new Earthquakes, the Sounders and the Philly Union in those years (2008-2010 or so). They'd already added Toronto FC, who stormed into the league with a rabid fan base and sold out games.

All of the groundwork for the next stage of the league (designated/high profile players) was laid in the years after the 2002 WC (Dos a Cero!) and the signing of Freddy Adu. Soccer was turning the corner, but it took a lot of faith from a few of the rich owners and a solid strategy to guard against an NASL-type of crash (outsized salaries and more often than not, shitty stadium rental agreements).

When I see/hear ppl squawking about relegation/promotion my immediate thought is "tell me you don't know the history of American soccer without actually saying you don't know the history." I actually think that we are moving incrementally closer to that model, but I still don't foresee existing owners agreeing to that type of risk on their investment.
So... I guess my question is... Bigger than the Beckham signing??

Also, aside from $$, I wonder what else they offered him. Because SoccerLIV was reportedly throwing around STUPID money to bring him to S.A.

Was talking about this yesterday. Unconfidently landed on Messi obviously being the better player but Beckham being more singularly popular in terms of everyone knowing who he was at the time above and beyond all other soccer players.

Agree with sentence #2, but I think not a bigger signing than Beckham because Becks was first.

This is my take. MLS had Beckham, Zlatan, Henry, Gerrard,
Ljungberg, Kaka… and I’m sure I’m missing a bunch more. Messi is better than all of them, but Beckham was a huge step for MLS.

All these teams signing these old guys. Eyeballs and tickets but just maybe back up the truck for 11 great youngish players. Yeah they got to want to come and I'm really talking more Ronaldo and benzema deals but I like buying a really great team.

Jeez, I need to pay more attention. I had no idea that his replacement was Javi Morales, one of my favorites from the RSL of the early 10s.

I made it to my first RSL game of the year last night. (Technically this is off topic since it was the Cup, not MLS.) The vast majority of RSL games I’ve attended have been with my mom, and with her not around, it’s been hard to get motivated to face traffic and other hassles involved in going to the stadium.

Anyway, awesome and fun game. It’s great when the guy whose jersey you’re wearing - who has since lost his starting position- creates three goals.
