Calgary GM and Asst. GM fired. As soon as they brought in Brian Burke, I know a lot of people thought Feaster was on thin ice, as the two were basically redundant. And... there you go.
Every team has injuries, but this note is ridiculous:
The Pens placed defenseman Kris Letang on IR with an upper-body injury. The Pens top-4 blueliners are all on IR (Scuderi, Martin, Orpik, Letang). With Deryk Engelland expected to hear from the NHL regarding his hit on Justin Abdelkader Saturday night, so the team recalled blueliner Philip Samuelsson from WBS.
So the Pens will likely have the following defensemen in the lineup: Niskanen, Despres, Bortuzzo, Dumoulin, Maatta and Samuelsson. Combined Despres (60), Bortuzzo (39), Maatta (34), Dumoulin (1) and Samuelsson (0) have played in 134 career NHL games.

Yup. Now the question is: Burke is now looking for a GM does he just look in the mirror and hire himself?

19 year old Olli Maatta scored on a penalty shot last night (SH, too), the second defencemen in franchise history to do so. A reporter at the PPG found the article from the last time it happened, during the Pens inaugural season in 1968. Noel Price and Andy Bathgate received 10-minutes misconduct penalties during the game, which came with $25 fines.
Crazy finish in San Jose tonight. Sharks led the Avs 3-2 with less than 2 minutes left in the game. The Avalanche pull their goalie, and get the tying goal. Then, with about a minute left, they score again to take the lead! So, now, the Sharks pull their goalie. And sure enough, they tie it again! First time I've ever seen both teams score at the end of a game, after each pulling their respective goalies. I was exhausted by the time the Sharks won the shootout.
Big NYE World Juniors game (Canada-US) starting at 11:30am ET.
Last year the US crushed Canada 5-1 in the semifinals on their way to gold. Today's game is for 1st place in the group and a bye to the semis. Canada must win in regulation. If it goes to OT then Canada will finish 2nd and face Russia in the quarterfinals.

The game in NJ yesterday was a bit of a bore. The Devils got the lead and did Devil things with it, and with only one real line the Pens couldn't do much to stop them. The kids enjoyed themselves though, and despite hearing it four or five times never asked what the "Rangers suck! Flyers swallow! Crosby watches!" chant meant.
a tweet I just saw, about the winter classic wrote:@TheFourthPeriod: With the windchill factoring in, and the snow still coming down, the temperature at the WC right now is -1F / -18C.
I don't get it. If you're going to allow a reporter embeded into your screening process and he's going to be allowed to publish the tough decisions you're going to make then you can't be apologizing to players.
You can't have it both ways. Imagine if they did this in 2010. Why wasn't Guerin selected, because he's too old?

My two cents? Leaving Ryan off of the USA team is idiotic. And personal. But Burke is a horse's ass and that is to be expected. Equally idiotic is naming Seth Jones to the team. This is a 19-year old with 40 NHL games of experience and a -11 rating. Yeah, yeah, Poile is the Preds GM but so what?
By the way, that -11 rating puts Jones at 756th overall in the NHL.

Hmm, you're right, he's not. Friggin' TSN just put up a graphic listing the USA roster and had Jones listed as one of eight defencemen. Ugh. They also left off Shattenkirk.
And they took Cervenka which is even more ludicrous. The guy couldn't even hack a 48 game season last year in Calgary. Worse conditioned player I've ever seen, could barely breathe out there.

So, Canada is going to name its squad Tuesday evening. Anybody want to venture their guesses about surprises on the team, and prominent players who might not make it?
Being Sharks-focused, I am guessing that 2010 Olympians Thornton, Marleau and Boyle will all miss it this time, but that maybe Logan Couture and Marc-Edouard Vlasic have good shots to make it. Frankly, it wouldn't bother me a bit if they all missed the team, and rested up a bit.
I'm disappointed and surprised that Logan Couture didn't make it. I suspected Thornton wouldn't, given the competition at center. A bit surprised Patrice Bergeron is there, but I assume it is simply because of his faceoff skill. Hamhuis is a surprise, but it's not like some all-world defenseman was omitted in his favor. Maybe they remember when he and Weber were really good together in Nashville. I think a couple guys got in on reputation, like Nash and Carter. Could have seen Giroux and Couture, over them.
