I'll say anything by the Pixies, especially anything of Doolittle. Fucking hate that shit.

I always had a crush on Deborah Harry, but the video you linked made me think she was pop eye candy, not a cool talented artist, and my too young to comprehend image was all wrong

Well, I don’t think Debbie Harry was super-talented or anything ( the real talent in the band was drummer Clem Burke and keyboardist Jimmy Destri). But, she did what was required and looked great doing it. Blondie made six or eight really catchy singles.

Debbie Harry was my first crush at age five or so. I think I probably wrote an letter to my brother with crayons over her without even realizing what I was doing.

I remember this appearance giving me feelings along the lines of what ljam described above, though in my memory it’s been a form-fitting purple jumpsuit, not her grandma’s workout sweats. Thanks for ruining that for me, pruitt…

(Muppet band went hard on that version of the song, whoa)

I never said she wasn't hot, but Blondie was a band that jumped on every fad in pop yet people tried to paint them as a rock band. No better than The Fixx.

And while I'm here, "I Love Rock and Roll" is just awful.

Eh. The Fixx were post punk pop. Nobody ever overrated them the way Blondie somehow gets confused as some seminal band.

Yeah, I know. But in my mind they are equally as non-epochal.

But remember - Blondie was not punk

I agree that Blondie is a completely overrated band. I mean, the art rock band, The Talking Heads get confused with punk as well (as does Television). What do all these bands have in common? They all played at CBGBs.

Yup. And, they all played on the same bills at Max's Kansas City, the Mudd Club and other New York punk clubs, too. So, while the above-named bands didn't play the punk music of The Ramones, The Dictators, The Dead Boys, Johnny Thunders, etc., they were all part of the same NYC scene and aesthetic (at least for a time, before Blondie and The Talking Heads broke big).

This is a fun book on that time and place in music:

I remember getting a funny feeling seeing Heart of Glass on MTV when I was 5 or 6, and feeling embarrassed and not knowing why. I always viewed Blondie as a pop band with a splash of punk. I’ve never been a fan of 80s pop, but Heart of Glass is better than most of the rest.

Shocked to see Harry is older than my mother. 76 years old. She was 34 on the Muppet Show, and women didn’t age nearly as well back then, so she had to be really old to be a hot pop star.

heh i'm sorry bapo! :) I hate slagging on bands, i'm used to people doing it for bands I like. :)

Coincidence was too much - I had The Fixx going on vinyl yesterday afternoon.

(Blondie was/is always a no-fly zone for me, one of those bands i just can't - even nostalgically.)

Oh Man! "Dirty Laundry" is as bad as it gets. A similarly themed and almost as shitty song is "Sunday Papers" by Joe Jackson.
