I really like watching Buffalo, even when they're beating my team. (I mean, not really, but in the general zone.)

:D i appreciate that unbiased enthusiasm

yeah...i've been a fan of this team for fk.... almost the entirety of their history, and the last few years i was almost ready to not be a fan. barely watched hockey last 2 years at all but this winter i realized wtf is the point of sports if not for enjoyment. Also I'm old LOL and don't need to be bitter.

And this team is fun as fk to watch. Sage is an assassin ;)

(still can't wrap my head around the fact that Tager is actually good let alone a goddamn superstar. It's nuts. If you watched him 2+ years ago he looked like an AHLer. amazing what confidence does; not to mention being in the correct position)

I'll try to put it into my brain to yell it tomorrow night while watching.

I feel like i call him something different every time. TNT; Rage Cage; Tah-jayy (my personal favourite). I'll try Sage out for a week, see how it flows.

You have nicknames for your favorite players? How cute! Reminds me of how I used to call Pavel Datsyuk 'my precious.'

A few years ago, I thought that Tage Thompson had the worst hockey name I had ever heard. Then I learned that he has a brother named Tyce. Fuck those parents, man. Brent and Kimberly have a lot to answer for.

It's so much, but again, lots of cost certainty as he's an RFA. Wouldn't be surprised if JBB locks him up long term. I haven't checked Cap Friendly or other salary predictive sites, but watch him sign for 7x4mm. Maybe 8x4mm. Killorn is likely gone, unless he's willing to take less $$.

I know a lot of GMs have already gone off record with a "WTF???" reaction to the Jeannot trade, but my guess is there's one GM out there who was offering a much better top piece and thus knows why Tampa went that high.

Yeah, but when did Tanner Jeannie become that valuable? Don’t get me wrong, I’d like him on my team. And, he seems perfect for playoff hockey. But, what a price for this guy! I think he’s a lot like Blake Coleman. What did the Bolts give up to get him a few years ago?

I'd kinda like to see that extension happen because there's a subset of Rangers fans who saw Nick Paul not as "Tampa improving massively on Goodrow, who they refused to sign long-term", but as proof Tampa regrets letting Goodrow go. I want arguments that this is actually their 2nd attempt to replace him rather than they're willing to give term to bottom six forwards but explicitly weren't with Goodrow.

I'm perfectly happy with just Paul instead of Goodrow (who I really like). The Bolts' bottom six is definitely the weak link this year (and maybe depth RD).

Goodrow's numbers are terrible. Everything about him screams "very good 4th liner who will get too many chances to play higher and too much credit for team success". The fact that we gave him that long of a contract and don't seem to trust him to play 4C is worrying at best given how lost he can look playing on the wing of legit talent.

In this thread, we guess Max's nicknames for fellow Swampers. I'll go first.

rass -- Halberstam

wlu_lax6 -- Wahoo

sancarlos -- Rhiannon

chedda -- Awesome Bill from Dawsonville. (Yeah, I know that chedda's name isn't Bill, but I've been watching a lot of 1984 Nascar lately, and the terribleness of that name won't leave my brain alone. I have to assign it to somebody. Or, rather, Max does.)

I've spent an embarrassing amount of time on the hockey interwebs the past couple of weeks, reading trade rumors and fan angst relating to the Penguins and Oilers. Funny how two fanbases can feel the same frustration about their front offices for completely different reasons.

The Penguins are a broken team, with too many holes in the dike and not enough fingers. Oilers fans believe that Edmonton, playing in the wide-open West, might only be one high-impact player away from making a real run. Trades are happening all over the place, but none involving these two teams. It's fun, if you enjoy reading about other people's misery.

They say you can't give yourself a nickname, but what if one internet friend dreams up what another internet friend might nickname you?

ETA - Bill Elliott's complexion is very chedda. I could definitely pull off going as him for Halloween if I cut my hair and got a nice fire suit.

On the heels of the Jake Walman extension comes one of slightly greater importance.

You guys are in a very different place than the Caps, but the last 4 or 5 days for them is all about the loss against Buffalo on Sunday. (not really, this was pretty inevitable) When they were unofficially out, they traded off Orlov and Hathaway, now they've traded Johannson and Gustoffson and traded for young Sandin. Any other moves are going to be continuing to sell off older guys and their cap hits (other than the untouchables) and trying to acquire young talent and draft picks.

My reaction when Edmonton picked up Evander Kane last year was something like, 'Really? This fucking guy?' But the Oilers are a completely different team when he's in the line-up. And he's been a model citizen since moving north. Or, at least I haven't read any embarrassing reports about him lately.

I think it's become easier for me to root for/tolerate problematic players because of my general worldview. My hatred has grown more diffuse over the years. Instead of hating specific targets passionately, I've grown to hate everybody just a little bit. It simplifies things.

I understand Mister D's dislike of the Patrick Kane trade, but I don't know if there are any hockey players who would make me feel that way now. (Other than obvious players like Mitchell Miller, who will probably never play in the NHL anyway.)

So many trades, I can't keep up. By Friday afternoon, there won't be any players left. San Jose and Arizona might have to dump Karlsson and Chychrun for late-round picks so that they won't feel like outcasts.

The Oilers didn't get either of those guys, but they got Mattias Ekholm from Nashville. Gave up a lot to get him, but I'm pretty excited about it. Sounds like exactly what they need -- a defenseman who actually, you know, defends.

Um, wow. After waiting 18 months for this trade, and after witnessing the insanity of the past week in the NHL, this seems like an underwhelming return for Arizona. This is the opposite of the Jeannot trade.

Well, as a sleeper Sens fan, I like this. They already have about a half-dozen players I love. Now we'll see what Chychrun looks like on a rising team.

Speculation is that the cost was so much lower than expected because most teams on him wanted retention. Which is ... not great for the league?

Yet they're retaining on the Patrick Kane trade.

It's the Coyotes. This kind of news is commonplace now. Nothing they do can make me do anything more than shrug.
